Free Things To Do Online While Social Distancing

I know that this is a very stressful time for some and thought that it would be a good idea to share things others could do from the comfort of their home to help them get through this time of social distancing and self-isolation.

I came across a website where you can watch Broadway Musicals free online through a trial offer for a limited time only... https://www.broadwayhd.com/

I will be adding more to this thread as I come across free or trial offers for online events, training websites and videos etc. Feel free to contribute as well.

You might be surprised how many webcams there are of cute animals out there. Just Google "zoo" and "webcam". Here's one of my favorites, the sea otter cam at Georgia Aquarium: https://www.georgiaaquarium.org/webc...-otter-webcam/

C0LLETTE 03-21-2020 02:10 PM

Ok, watching that website is almost more fun than having sex...also, please note that I am "senior" now and watching otters floating on their backs is a lot more relaxing than watching dogs humping in the park across the road.

A friend of mine had a GREAT idea. He is going through his old photographs - actual photographs from long ago, not digital photographs - and finding pictures of times that he shared with friends. Then he takes a digital pic of the photograph with his phone, and emails or texts it to that person - saying "remember this?"

He sent me a picture of a sand sculpture we both made at the beach about 30 years ago. It has kept me smiling all day.

I just went to check our public library's website and noticed that due to the Covid-19 closures they are providing incentives for library card holders to access eBooks, movies, and music online by increasing credits and providing unlimited streaming.

I thought I would share this info. with you so that you can check your library's website to see if the same or similar offers are available to you as well.

The Camino de Santiago, or Way of Saint James, is a Catholic pilgrimage to Spain’s Santiago de Compostela. An increasingly popular route for hikers and cyclists, you can recreate the experience at home – though it may take a tad longer than the 30 to 35 days it would require to complete the course IRL. Log onto walking4fun.com, then choose one of three routes: the famous Camino Francés, which starts in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, and two Portuguese trails: the coastal, which starts in Porto, or the central, which starts in Lisbon. Log in to track your steps as you walk around your own neighbourhood, then apply them to the route you choose. And while you won’t get to see actual views of your chosen trail, the site does have photos from the journey to help you pretend that you’re there.

For real history buffs, Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, is a must-visit. For now, take a guided virtual tour of the site.

Get unobstructed views of sites like the Acropolis, the ancient citadel that sits on a hill overlooking Athens, or the Colosseum, the ancient amphitheatre in Rome. Find both, as well as other historical sites and cityscapes, here.

Or explore the Great Wall of China. A 360-degree video tour offers three options for taking in the ancient structure: the view along Jinshaling to Simatai, one of the most popular hiking routes, the view from one of the thousands of watchtowers and the view during winter.

CULTURE
A wide swath of the world’s museums are accessible via Google’s Arts & Culture app. You’ll find everything from the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, Musée d’Orsay and Frida Kahlo Museum (also known as the Blue House) to hidden gems like Turkey’s Museum of Innocence, a museum set up by Turkish author Orhan Pamuk to accompany his 2008 novel of the same name. And if you didn’t get a chance to check out now-closed exhibits, like Kara Walker’s “A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby” or Ai Weiwei’s 2015 takeover of Alcatraz, here’s your chance.

Closer to home, take a new guided tour through the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The 20-minute video covers two galleries, Indigenous Perspectives and Canadian Journeys.

Music lovers should take advantage of Boise State’s virtual field trips to music destinations . Visitors can experience Vienna, Austria; New Orleans, La.; Cleveland; and Bristol, Tennessee-Virginia through text, photos, audio and video.

Social distancing means that we’re all spending a lot more time at home, canceling or rescheduling vacations, and probably not going out to things like movies and museums. Staying at home doesn’t mean you can’t experience a little travel, and maybe a little culture, from your home computer.

Google Arts & Culture has a collection of more the 500 different museums and galleries up on its site that you can visit virtually. Clicking through to each one will bring up images of some of the museum or gallery’s collection, and in some cases full virtual tours of the museum you can take to pretend like, in a way, you’re actually there.

You can check out the full (massive) list of included galleries and museums. The list defaults to listing some of the most popular options first, but you can also sort them in alphabetic order or look at where they all are on a map.

Collette, your post was reported. As per the creator of this thread: "This thread was created to help those that are struggling during this time by providing resources to them to give them some peace and happiness." Your style of humor can feel trivializing / mocking / negative to some who are coming to a thread for the purpose of the thread. No public response please- just for you to think about, since it's a report we've received about you from others as well on different threads.

Platinum Pearl, I was glad to see your post concerning adoptive grandparents. Six years ago I was introduced by a friend to a lovely young couple from Turkey who had no relatives or friends here in Canada. I got to know them very well and she informed us that she was pregnant. Well, that beautiful daughter of theirs showed up four years ago and when she was born I was asked if I would want to be her Canada grandmother. I accepted with pride. I visit her every few days on Skype and I get all the latest stories from her. After all, four year olds have tons of stories LOL. I see her once in a while as they do not live far but we all have the masks going on. To get smiles and hugs from this precious child is more than I could ever ask, not having kids of my own. That lovely couple are like kids I never had.
