Crime In The News

So I always see news about crimes being committed and thought I would start a thread where we can post about current crimes and discuss them or just discuss anything regarding crime, share news and sites.

"Police Chief" in rural CO arrested for sex assault

I lived in this area for a long time so I was surprised to see this happen in a town of about 800 people.

Paula Vargas FOX31 Denver
11:48 p.m. MDT, September 22, 2011

LOG LANE VILLAGE, Colo. – Fort Morgan Police have arrested the town marshal of Log Lane Village, 33-year-old Edwin Irizarry, for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman, FOX31 News has learned.

http://media.trb.com/media/alternate...0-22230253.jpg

The town marshal is the equivalent of a police chief in the rural community.

The alleged victim says a co-worker mentioned Irizarry during a dinner conversation on Sept. 14, prompting the co-worker to exchange several text messages with Irizarry while the two women were at a Fort Morgan restaurant.

According to the alleged victim, Irizarry continued sending messages to her co-worker the next day, asking if she (the alleged victim) was “hot” and whether she would be ”interested in a (sexual) threesome with him and another.”

The co-worker, whose name has not been released, told police that Irizarry sent nude pictures of himself to her cell phone along with the text message “Ask if she (the alleged victim) can handle this.”

According to the affidavit, the woman refused to look at the nude photos of Irizarry that her co-worker attempted to show her.

Later the same day, the woman told her friend that she “wanted to get wasted” after having a bad day. She says she accepted an invitation to Irizarry’s Fort Morgan home, and sent him a text message stating “Just no threesomes. Drunk or not. Haha.”

The woman told police she remembered Irizarry giving her two alcoholic drinks shortly after she arrived at his home, but she didn’t know how much alcohol was in each drink because they were mixed with Coke.

By 10:30 p.m., the woman’s co-worker says she (the alleged victim) was too drunk to walk and had to be physically carried to a bedroom.

According to the affidavit, the woman vomited on herself and on the bedding shortly after she laid down on the bed. Irizarry claims the woman was unable to stand, so he lifted her while her co-worker “removed the bedding.” He says they left her on the bed in her bra and underwear.

While the alleged victim’s co-worker took the bedding home to be washed and to retrieve clean clothes for her, Irizarry is accused of getting into the bed with the woman and fondling her underneath her underwear.

“I did not say ‘no’ and did not physically push Izzy away,” the woman told investigators, but she did say that she was “very drunk and did not feel well.”

The co-worker admits that Irizarry joined her and the alleged victim in bed and says he began sexually touching both women.

She told police that her friend was “very out of it,” and says she told Irizarry that she hadn’t seen anyone “that drunk since high school.”

The alleged victim told police that she called her primary physician the next day and went to the Sexual Assault Response Advocates for a rape exam. She says she decided to file a report with police “even though she was very afraid that she was assaulted by a police officer,” who she knew to be the chief of police of Log Lane Village.

She says she received a text message from an unknown number while she was being examined, asking “Did you make it okay? How is work sexy?” She says she finally called the number after receiving several text messages discussing the events from the previous night.

During the recorded phone conversation, Irizarry admitted to having sex and knowing that one of the women was drunk and vomited “from excessive alcohol.”

According to the police report, Irizarry began to downplay her condition, saying he “didn’t think she was that drunk.”

The Log Lane Police Department didn’t immediately return calls about the alleged incident, and referred FOX31 Denver to the department’s attorney.

Body of missing NEBR girl found; step dad arrested

And yet another story in a rural small town where I grew up! I knew this was suspicious right away when I heard the little girl went missing. I went to the same grade school and just knew this did not happen in small towns where everyone knows each other. People just do not leave their child off at school with others and leave not knowing they didn't arrive inside safely. When it comes to children missing like this, the first investigation should be immediate family.

I believe this story was on Nancy Grace last night.

By Associated Press, Updated: Friday, September 23, 1:43 PM

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — Authorities said Friday that they found the body of a missing 8-year-old girl in a remote area several miles away from her Nebraska home, and they arrested her stepfather on suspicion of murder.

The state patrol said a rancher called police after finding something suspicious, and that investigators found Kerra Wilson’s body Thursday evening in a rugged area of Sioux County that is several miles north of her home in Mitchell.

Police had been searching for Kerra since Wednesday afternoon, when her school called her parents because she hadn’t shown up. Her stepfather, 32-year-old Salvador Carlos Lopez, told investigators he had dropped her off at Mitchell Elementary School that morning.

On Friday, authorities said they don’t believe Lopez, and that the last time Kerra was seen by anyone other than her stepfather was Tuesday evening, when she was with her grandparents.

Mitchell Elementary School principal Kirk Kuxhausen said Kerra did not appear in any of the security camera footage shot in the school or on the playground on Wednesday.

The girl’s body had not been moved as of Friday morning because the surrounding terrain was so rugged and because the scene was still being processed, the patrol said. Investigators are still trying to determine when and where the girl was killed, State Patrol Lt. Monica Bartling said.

An autopsy will help reveal how the girl died and whether she was sexually assaulted, Bartling said.

Lopez was being held at the Scotts Bluff county jail, and was scheduled to make an initial court appearance in Sioux County later Friday. Bartling said Lopez does not have an extensive criminal record.

“We were hoping to bring Kerra safely home to her family; sadly, we weren’t able to do that,” Bartling said.

Kerra Wilson has three younger siblings who are all staying with family members.

RIP Kerra. I hope that guy gets the death penalty or life with no parole!

3 Lake City police officers shot now in good condition

yet another crime early this afternoon...
I always hear that domestic violence situations are the worst for law enforcement officials to deal with. That and traffic violations.

Posted: September 23, 2011 - 3:03pm | Updated: September 23, 2011 - 5:30pm The Florida Times Union/jacksonville.com

Three Lake City police officers shot Friday afternoon by a rifle-wielding man while apparently trying to enforce an injunction for protection are hospitalized in good condition.

Two officers were shot in the leg, while the third was shot in the arm, City Manager Wendell Johnson said he was told by Police Chief Argatha Gilmore.

The attack occurred about 1:40 p.m. while the officers were serving the injunction at a one-story home on Northwest Irma Avenue, said Sgt. Ed Seifert, a spokesman for the Columbia County Sheriff's Office. The gunman remains barricaded in the home, which is surrounded by dozens of officers and deputies, Seifert said.

Johnson told the Times-Union that the chief told him the unidentified gunman was distraught over a custody case discussed during a court hearing this morning. The man was seen wearing camouflage and carrying multiple firearms as he entered the home of his estranged wife this afternoon, causing a neighbor to contact police, Johnson said.

Johnson said the officers went to the home apparently to enforce an injunction for protection that a judge had issued against the man.

The man came outside the home and shot the officers, Johnson said. Johnson identified the wounded as Sgt. Jason Byrd and Investigator David Greear, both 12-year veterans of the agency, and six-year veteran Officer Mitchell Cline.

The officers were flown to Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where a spokeswoman said they were in good condition. Johnson said the chief left the officers' sides in the late afternoon after visiting them at the hospital.

"They apparently are going to be just fine," Johnson said.

Seifert also didn't have details on the gunman or the nature of the injunction, which is a restraining order used in domestic violence cases.

The home is several blocks north of U.S. 90 near downtown. Seifert said Lake City residents are being warned to stay out of the area, a residential neighborhood in the northwestern part of the city. It's unknown if any homes have been evacuated.

"Things are very fluid right now," Seifert said. "We are trying to make contact with the subject to speak with him. We are hopeful it will end peacefully."Marianne Whedbee, 78, lives several blocks south of the scene. She said roads are blocked off throughout the area and that crowds of people are standing around hoping to get a better view.Whedbee said that the cable was cut in her neighborhood about 4 p.m., though it's unclear if that was related to the standoff. She said she is staying home until the matter is resolved."If he was on the loose I might be a little more concerned," Whedbee said.

Three Lake City police officers shot Friday afternoon by a rifle-wielding man while apparently trying to enforce an injunction for protection are hospitalized in good condition.

The gunman shot himself after barricading himself and having a standoff with police for about 6 hours. I am happy to report the officers were only wounded and all will be ok!

That is just for murder rates. It is crazy isn't it? Considering I only tend to hear about FL all the time on the news. I wonder if in Omaha and Aurora, IL the murderer goes unknown perhaps and maybe they just find victims but do not know who committed the crime? It is weird. I've looked for other sites to compare the findings but haven't found any yet. Anyone feel free to post any statistics you may find regarding this or any other crimes. I would say, just my opinion, that Miami probably beats out the other two when all crimes are considered especially burglaries and robberies.

I found a link for registered sex offenders. http://www.city-data.com/so/sexoffenders.html

96 year old murders nephew.

a 96 yr. old... wow!

First Coast News
Sep 26,2011 at 11:41 AM EST
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The 96-year-old woman arrested for killing her nephew will remain in jail with no bond.

The shooting happened Sunday night at a home on John Street, though it was initially reported as a heart attack.

Police found 53-year-old John W. Rice on the floor of a bedroom with evidence of a shooting.

According to Officer Mark Samson with the St. Augustine Police Department, investigators determined Rice's aunt, 96-year-old Amanda Rice Stevenson, had shot him once with a .357 magnum. She was in another bedroom when police were in the home.

Neighbors like Debra Dillinger are calling this a tragedy.

"It's really sad because he's a nice man," said neighbor Debra Dillinger. "He's helped us and we've helped him over the years."

Several people who live nearby said the family was working to put Stevenson into a nursing home because she had become combative and angry.

Do you think sex offenders should be required to live together in a certain area or community, why or why not?

tapu 09-28-2011 08:55 AM

I think North Omaha is tied up in large proportion with rival gangs. Drugs from Detroit fuel the violence. Just what I've heard from obsessively following crime on the Internet.

What zone is this in? And where's that exit? :)

RE: Aurora, Illinois.

It doesn't surprise me to see an Illinois city on the list, but I would've thought somewhere farther south than Aurora. Southern Illinois has a region called "Little Egypt" (you may have heard of Cairo, IL, one of the larger towns there). That part of Illinois has a huge gun culture and feud culture, originally between families and groups of families but now more evident in organized gangs. Little Egypt is nowhere you'd want to live. (I have family there. Neat, huh?)

So, some of that culture must spread into the rest of Illinois. Maybe that's why Aurora. Also, drugs and guns from Detroit would be a factor.

I'm surprised, actually, that Detroit doesn't make the list! It's like Beirut--ever seen it?

I think the statistics must be per capita... not that there are more total murders persay

Yes, per capita.

As an afterthought to what I posted above about Aurora, I meant to say Detroit and Chicago guns and drugs. Aurora may be the gang center for Chicago. Looks like it.

tapu 09-28-2011 04:13 PM

YOu know what surprises me about that city list? Omaha and Chicago gang communities are on there, but not LA's Compton?? Or East LA??

Weird. They must be settling down out there.

oh, missed it: it's listed as just LA.

LOL. I wonder if this will bring more problems instead of helping a community..

ruffryder 09-29-2011 10:54 AM

Any weird laws you heard of are that are in your community..

For example: there is one that can get you arrested for wearing saggy pants. guess i better grab a belt!
