Occupy (your city here) - Practical Matters
Occupy Wall Street is gaining more momentum every day. I hope we "the 99%" reclaim what is ours.
There's another thread to talk about the merits of these actions, insurance and individual debt etc. This thread is for people who are going to, or who have attended a demonstration. I'd like to gather useful info here, for example: Do you have a plan if you get arrested? Were you detained? How do you treat eyes and skin exposed to pepper spray? What happens if you get separated from your cell phone? What will you say if someone in the media sticks a microphone in front of you? Are you taking a first aid kit, food, or other supplies? Will you be silent, bring a drum, or make a sign? If you can't physically attend, what are you doing to support these actions? The more prepared we are, the better chance for success we have. ! Let's do this ! |
I am looking forward to attending the Chicago protest again. I have'nt been this jazzed since the sixties! If they shove the mic in my face I will say:I am protesting because there is a disproportionate amount of influence a small number of people have over our legislative process and political funding. To all you Folks out there: You can be DARN sure that nothing will change if we do nothing, so put on your boots and march for what you believe in!
My Sign- Purchasable Government aka corruption Must Be Stopped! I've been sprayed with mace before and I will bring a gallon of water to wash out my eyes with and drink, towels, and munchies in my shoulder bag. If I get arrested I will only worry about my furkids, but I have a femme neighbor who will pet sit for me if I get thrown in the hoosekow;) |
I CAN NOT WAIT
I have not been so jazzed about some thing in my life time. I wish I could get my hands on a set of double tenor drums. I'd be drumming. My brother and I were in a drum and bugle corp when we were teen agers, I was a majorette, he played the drums....and of course where ever he was, I was...so he taught me how to play the drums. I can play snare too, but it's been years since I've done par-a-diddles...have to act like I know what I'm doing. Tenor, I'll pick right up......ANYHOW.....been thinking about my sign in case I can't snag those drums......I think I'll wear a nice business suit and something funky for shoes. Either high top tennis soes that I put inner tube repair patches all over.....or black work boots.. The guy a few door up told me he'd like to go with me. He's a well tattooed extreme sport type. He's all bent out of shape about education cuts. We were talking about lawn signs, that's how this got started. I work for an attorney. She knows how passionate I can be. She told me she is jealous she can't go (why not?) She will have to live Vicariously though me, but cautioned me, do not get arrested. Over 1000 people have signed up to attend the meeting on the 12th so far. |
We're going Saturday I don't have a drum anymore so signs will be carried! I'll know what to do if any kind of batons or sprays are used from other protests I've been to:
Try not going by yourself in case shit hits the fan Vynil or latex gloves to protect from blood y pepper spray Carry water to irrigate eyes Wear fitted clothing Have emergency digits on speed dial We've let both sets of parents know we are attending so someone can get Worm in case.. Sunglasses Hide phone if civil officers come at you in an area it won't break. Did I mention good running shoes in case ya gotta run!?! Pull hair back if long Eat a healthy meal beforehand STAY CALM Good luck and stay safe! |
On my way to Occupy Philadelphia.
Last night the mayor arranged to have a big screen TV show the Phillies baseball game at the demonstration site. Philly- city of contradictions! They held Kol Nidre at Occupy Wall Street last night. Looks like we are settling in for the long haul. Yay! |
Amazing!
This place is kind of like the world I'd like to see--- empowered people working together in coalition, traditionally marginalized people staffing tables and in leadership roles, a vibe of common good at no one's expense. And the goal is as broad and specific as "economic justice" is. I'm in. |
Holy Geezo! It's almost like Woodstock all across the country!:) Laying it all down in the cold street next to your brother and sister, who are strangers, yet your looking out for each other's back!
