The Assets does not have the kind of relationship-based drama that was so integral to The Americans at all. There is one marriage that is central to the plot in a different way and isn't apparent until further in. It should be noted that this is a depiction of real life events, not straight fiction. There are other relationships more emphasized in this one, spy/handler for instance.

I was alive and very aware of cold war espionage at the time so for me it's a lot of memories of my twenties, I remember these events. The pre-tech period and tradecraft is refreshing now that everything is so tech. It's close to a documentary and in fact the last episode is a recap of the real events and newscasts with the real life people who were portrayed. (docudrama?)

This was a great bonus for me but if you're looking for a fictional drama it might not be the fit you're looking for. If you enjoy espionage for it's own sake, I would try another episode or two before giving it a toss, it draws you in on that level.
