I recently saw 45 Years. It is about a married heterosexual couple that are on the verge of their 45th wedding anniversary and the husband receives word that the body of his previous girl friend was found. She died in a freak accident in the Alps of Switzerland. Of course this girlfriend was "the one that got away."
I think the movie did a good job of showing the complex layers of long term marriage/partnering and the twists and turns of matters of the heart. In my mind I think the wife struggled with some of her feelings of betrayal, shock and jealousy. I am glad the movie showed she found her voice and allowed herself to be angry and realize she deserves more.
(The ending was a bit ambiguous and the above is my subjective interpretation.)
