I loved this movie and have watched it a few times. It was not overt but my projection each time I saw it was that the leads fell in love in the movie (because I wanted them to).

Excerpt from People magazine when the movie came out:

"In life, as on the screen, Diane's mother left her husband in Lyons and moved to Paris with her two daughters to be near her best friend. Kurys even gave the screen characters the names of their real-life counterparts."
