Well, if forced to choose fiction I guess I'd say Herman Hesse because after a quick wikipedia glance/researching them both, it just seems like of the two H.H. led the more interesting life, which I think tends to makes for a much better author of fiction. However my two favorite books ever have been old dictionaries each of them similar to the one in the picture below.
