Sidebar: Before a certain point in history, it was not a woman’s prerogative to change her mind, or to have much of any choice at all.

Eventually some social orders became enlightened enough to “allow” women some choice over their own lives, and it was so extraordinary a concept that it bore some explaining.
Thank you for this, homoe! While it does seem self explanatory, I do feel it's important to remember that women, for what's seems to be since time immemorial, have not been on equal footing in American society. *thanks truly, for your post*
