Most bikes have pedals that one side has a "cage" that you can strap your foot into if you don't have the cycling shoes, and the other side of the pedal has an SPD clip for you to clip in if you have the shoes. Call the gym you are going to to check but most have an option to wear regular gym shoes. You just want to make sure you have a firm sole on the shoe.
