Australians face $66K fine and jail time if they fly home
from India during COVID-19 travel ban
The Federal Government published a press release in the early hours of Saturday morning announcing harsh penalties for Australian citizens who attempt to fly home from India, where more than 300,000 new COVID-19 cases have been reported each day this past week. The temporary ban begins on May 3 and applies to any travellers who have visited India in the 14 days preceding the date they intend to arrive in Australia. Citizens who fail to comply face a $66,000 fine and up to five years of jail time. It is thought to be the first time the Federal Government has made entering Australia a criminal offence to its own citizens.
