Alison Bechdel, the illustrious comic artist and writer whose life was depicted onstage in the musical
Fun Home, has penned a new graphic memoir—this time detailing her complicated, long-running relationship to fitness. Titled
The Secret to Superhuman Strength, the memoir covers the trials of fad exercises and how, despite the hurdles and pitfalls of self-improvement, we might even learn to appreciate our bodies for carrying us through life.
Bechdel will be joined by artist Nicole Eisenman to discuss The Secret to Superhuman Strength in this virtual Chicago Humanities Festival talk and Q&A session, so be sure to come prepared with questions. (Bonus: Tickets come with a copy of the book.)
Sidebar: Some of you might remember her as the author of "Dykes To Watch Out For" comic strip. The strip, which ran from 1983 to 2008, was one of the earliest ongoing representations of lesbians in popular culture
