Cannonball Adderley Sextet in Switzerland 1963 - Work Song

I probably first heard this song by Cannonball in the mid 70s and it didn't do anything at all for me. In fact, I thought it was on the boring side. Then in the late 80s I started listening to other bands that recorded this song and they were terrible. I'm talking about hard-core, bebop bands like MJQ and they just didn't get it. They sounded horrible.

This song has a "snap" to it and a band has to be really tight (Duke Ellington tight) to get it right. The "snap" represents the bang as the prisoners work in a chain gang. Nat Adderley knew exactly what he was doing when he wrote the song, it took me almost 20 years after first hearing it for me to understand.

That said, I'm a big fan of Cannonball and have never been a fan of Nat Adderley. Give me another 20 years and I'm sure I'll start sending shout-outs for Nat.
