I don't have a formula for you to follow, and I think this would be a great reason to find a therapist, if you don't already have one, and discuss it with them. I think that its important to trust yourself, and when setting up that first meeting, be smart—let your friends know where you are going, preferably it is a public space. If its in another city, make sure your friends know the name, address and phone number of the person you are going to see. Have a friend that you can check in with.
