Due to various circumstances I found myself aboard the municipal robo truck today watching the sewer cam snaking through the sewers, upstream amongst downflowing turds and wads of toilet paper flowing in real time as people flushed toilets, measuring the spaces between lateral pipes, etc. Many spiders live under our streets, and white outcroppings of some sort of fungi or bacterial colonies. The fellows operating the sewercam were quite amusing in their assessments of the view: "That guy's got a bad ass" (lol) upon passing a particularly congealed and discolored lateral. It was quite fascinating to view the sewage system under the streets- it's amazing how simple low-tech (gravity) engineering so effectively transports our waste to the municipal treatment authority and keeps us clean and healthy mere inches from our homes. A glimpse of something so essential yet seldom seen (at least by me). Fascinating and fun!
