hi Linus

For the last few weeks (maybe longer, who knows), my hard drive occasionally makes the noise like it's trying to read a disk, only it's empty. It'll do it once or twice then stop. (win xp)

It does it randomly; i can be reading threads here, in my email, or playing solitaire.

Any thoughts?

Thanks so much!!
Do you mean Floppy Drive? If not, then I do not quite understand what you mean since reading the hard drive would indicate that there is a hard drive to read.

Now, if it is the floppy drive, did you recently access a document from a floppy disk? Because if you did, XP tries to keep a cache of recently accessed documents and is probably trying to see if it can find it. You can try the following to see if that stops it.

Go to Start --> control panel --> taskbar AND Go to start menu/[start menu]/[customize]/[advanced]

and at the very bottom click on the
[CLEAR LIST] button
