Buddha said on his deathbed:
Do not accept what you hear by report, do not accept tradition, do not accept a statement because it is found in your books, nor [simply] because it is in accord with your belief, nor because it is the saying of your teacher...Be lamps unto yourselves.
The part of this most useful to me is not accepting something just because it supports what I already believe. I notice that when I hear something in the news about a person, an issue, a crime, it is so easy both to believe and remember that particular piece of info as true, rather than anything that does not support my current position. So I try not to.
