I keep trying to graft shoots from the rose plants that my Grandmother had in her yard to one’s in my yard. Not working well! Phooey!

Her old house and property is in a town about 25 minutes from me and the current owners kept most of my Grandma’s plants- which is something because she died in 1972. They have let me take cuttings to try and do the grafting after I explained to them why I wanted to do this. Nice people.

The good news is that an old rose variety popped out in my yard this summer just out of the blue! My house was built in 1940 and it has been amazing how many of the original plants have found their way back. Plants from generation to generation are different. So, I am thinking that this rose plant might be much closer to the old rose varieties of my grandmother and I might have better luck. Have to make a trip over to see if I can get more shoots.

This is totally a mission of sentimentality for me. I had many good years helping my Grandma in her garden and going with her to the county fair with her roses. I think I just have gardening (both flowers and vegetables) in my genes. My Dad was a grand gardener and we had the best fresh fruits and vegetables during my early childhood. I helped him work in the gardens, too. I believe these experiences contribute to my needing a home-base, a home of my own and soil to create within and know that it is mine- or shared with a partner as owners. Renting is just not an option for me even when dealing with home ownership is a hassle.

One of my nephews is an olive farmer and also produces olive oils. He was close to my Dad and he gave me 2 olive trees that he imported from the two areas that my Mom & Dad were from in Italy. He ordered and planted one of his orchards with these varieties to develop a new oil for his line. They have done well and he has put out an olive oil that he named after my Dad. I thought that was wonderful and warm.

Interesting what we gravitate toward that is part of our childhood as we live this life and travel far from time gone by. Simplicty also has become a mantra.
