I used to carry my laptop (for work, have to have it), my smartphone, plus a whole load of books with me on trips - that's a lot of weight and luggage space. Then I would usually buy more books at the airport on the flight home, or worry about finishing a book on the plane long before the flight ended (hey, I travel a lot, long flights, lots of long evenings I can luxuriate in reading!)
Now, I still carry my laptop and phone - but I also carry a whole warehouse full of books with me on that little skinny Kindle. doesn't even take a sliver more of extra space in my luggage! I love my Kindle, love shopping for new books on it with the whispernet, love pulling it out and knowing everything I want to read (plus other things I hadn't thought of but will find while browsing) will be right there at my fingertips.
I'm kind of torn about the Fire because the e-ink is so easy on the eyes on my old kindle. But I'm intrigued by the other functions.
