I have heard a lot about agave nectar recently, I will give it a try.
"Frantic edge" is a great way to describe it, that's exactly how it feels.

I did a step down approach...first going off of white sugar stuff and using stevia and honey and agave nectar instead. For me, using those ingredients to get my "sweet" for awhile took the frantic edge off the sugar cravings...and then I could ease away from them too.
