A decision to move in with a partner before we clarified our expectations of what that meant.

Four. And I’ve taught in five.

It’s crinkly, shiny, tight and teal, and matches my skirt which has two birds embroidered near the hem. I know that’s TMI and I don’t care. ☺

10. What are your thoughts on gas prices?

I try not to think about oil cartels or OPEC or gas prices; I’m willfully ignorant in those areas.

Imagining something I feel ethically compelled to keep to myself.

Wiping dried globs of toothpaste spit out of the sink that a certain 12-year-old who lives in the same house as I do, deposits on a daily basis.

17. If you didn't have to work, would you volunteer?

Honestly, no. I worked in literacy for a number of years, I started a GED class as a volunteer at an LGBT center, I’ve tutored friends—I think from this point forward, I’d just focus on my writing, traveling and developing relationships with people I care about, if I didn’t have to work.

18. Get up early or sleep in?

Sleep in, and someone brings me coffee in bed.

19. What is your favorite cartoon character?

Natasha, one of the Russian spies on Bullwinkle. She was my first femme fatale role model.

20. Favorite thing to do at night with a partner?

Talk in bed.

21. Have you found real love yet?

Yes, more than once.

When I hit 25 (long ago), I was struck suddenly with the realization that I would not be young forever. Something about that quarter-century turning point got to me.

Greens and carrot juice smoothie from the truck outside our office building.

Yogurt.

27. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?

Absolutely not. It’s an affirmation of love.

28. Coolest thing you own?

An original Jean Arp collage, a semi-nude woman in a kimono. A friend who died of AIDS left it to me.

30. Favorite movie you wouldn't want anyone to find out about?

Not a movie, but I watched the whole first season of Reno 911 last week on vacation and laughed out loud a few times. And that was like the fifth time I’d seen some of those episodes.

34. Who from high school would you like to run in to?

Jill, the best friend I held hands with, under the covers.

35. What radio station is your car radio tuned to right now?

NPR and I forget the station that broadcasts it. Also my IPod is hooked up to the speakers in my car.

36. Is it better to give or to receive?

They’re part of the same continuum.

37. Bath or Shower?

Spacious, clean, stone-tile shower with a great flow, delicious body wash and exfoliating gloves—on someone else.

38. Worst relationship mistake that you wish you could take back?

Please see #4.

39. Do you like the person who sits directly across from you at work?

No one sits across from me, but I get along fine with the guys whose offices are to the left and right of mine—not that I don’t think either one of them wouldn’t throw me under the bus if it benefited him in some way, and it wouldn’t even be personal.

40. What famous person would you like to have dinner with?

Jane Lynch and Martina Navritalova, and they’ve been travelling together and are sick of each other’s company and there I am, across from them at a small candle-lit table in a red dress and heels, and look, here comes the waiter with our Mojitos.

41. Indoors or Outdoors?

Outdoors to reach outwardly. Indoors to reach inwardly.

42. Have you ever crashed your vehicle?

Sadly, when I first moved to L.A. I managed to crunch in three of the four corners of my car. But then I “got” how to drive there and became the Queen of Parallel Parking.

43. Have you ever had to use a fire extinguisher for its actual purpose?

When N and I first bought our house upstate, I tried to move the gas stove a teeny bit and somehow dislodged a pipe, setting the back panel on fire. After that, every clerk and neighbor in our small town greeted me by happily asking if I had burned down my house yet.

44. Last book you read for real?

Two friends’ latest books of poetry, and a friend's memoir.

45. Something you've kept from childhood?

Two large, black, faux-Egyptian cats that used to sit on either side of our fireplace. Each has ears that have been secretly glued back on and painted with black magic marker many times over by my sister and I, who constantly knocked them over when we got wild.

46. Strangest place you have ever brushed your teeth?

Next to her truck.

47. Somewhere you've never been and would like to go?

The Florida Everglades. Alaska. Spain.

48. Do you go to church?

As a kid, yes.

49. At this point in your life would you rather start a new career or relationship?

Relationship.

50. Just how OLD are you?

Old enough to brace myself for bias and assumptions when I hear that question. Young enough to realize I’m overreacting.
