I read something yesterday that made me very, very happy. It was an article about The Urban Prep Academy for Young Men in Englewood (a suburb of Chicago, I think). It is the only public, all-male, all-African American high school and the article was written because they are sending ALL of the their 107 seniors to college. 100% were accepted to 72 colleges across the country!

The author of the article, Dr. Boyce Watkins, wrote "Being a great athlete can make you powerful, but being a great thinker makes you EMPOWERED."

I love that. I freakin' love that.

I love that when you call the school, before you are able to put an extension in, a message says that the students are college-bound. The teachers and kids put in waaaaay longer hours than average schools and it has paid off tenfold. Many of their graduating students could not read past a fourth grade level when they arrived at the school. A little more than a year later and look where they are!

It's such a boon for charter schools! I hope that others take notice and learn from the success of these educators.
