Depending on how you are with pain, for me personally, I know I find it can be a real emotional release, either that or relaxing, and it's getting inked in particular that it happens to me too, I've cried, been hysterical with laughter and even fallen asleep, to the point the poor lass almost called an ambulance cos she thought I was out cold. So, my answer, was that you needed that emotional release and the pain from the tattoo allowed it to come out.
