Am thinking about my Aunt Vicky. She died last night. She was 92.
It is sad but a blessing. Is very difficult to watch the people you love slowly lose their memory. It is difficult to see them in a nursing home when their behavior makes it difficult to manage them at home. It is difficult when they kind of remember which part of the family you belong to but cant recall exactly who you are.
But, I will always remember her as one of the strong, independent, vocal women in my family. I will remember how she dressed impeccably well into her 80's, easily being seen as a hetero femme extraordinaire. I will remember how she matched her brothers in volume, tone, facts, and fist pounding on the table as she defended those less fortunate (guess where I got it from) during the family holidays around the table discussions - aka the informal Italian summit to solve the worlds problems.
I will also remember how she made sure I had stuffed artichokes every Easter. It truly is the little things.
RIP Auntie. You will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
