Well, I think that the extra layer of material can make a difference, in a regular cut (such as my Levi 501s), as well. Men's underwear is already giving you extra material to begin with, unless you are filling it with a packy. Add that additional piece of material that a "pocket" gives, and you are adding even more. When you are talking a looser cut than 501s (the more "in style" jeans which you are probably referring to), yes I agree there is more flexibility.

Depends on the body type and the jeans. That is why we all have our favs!
