I was reading this thread last night and I was reminded of the Dutch version of a hotdog that I was "treated" to last year while visiting the Netherlands.
I give you, the frikandel:
The Dutch, not really known for their cuisine, well, except they do have outstanding cheeses and breads, consider this their version of a "hot dog." It is a deep-fried long, thin (and I might add nasty) sausage, of which one of the ingredients is horse meat. Yes, horse meat. And please note the Dutchies love their fries (or frietjes) with a mayo-based sauce that has a slight pickle-like taste to it. If you ask for ketchup with them, they know right away you are an American.
After experiencing it, but avoiding another Dutch "delicacy" - raw herring -- I took my Dutch girlfriend to the Ikea in her city, where we had American-style hot dogs. Even she noted they were a distinct improvement.
And don't even get me started on that other favorite Dutch treat -- bitterballen. You can even order them at the McDonald's over there. lol
