This just brought back a humiliating episode I experienced. It was grade nine and the high school I attended had uniforms. I wasn't sure what shoes to get, so I let my mother convince me to get this comfortable, black, ones with laces. (if my older sister had been friendlier back then, maybe should could have helped me?) I walked into history class and a jerk yelled out, "Hey! Look at those grandma shoes!" I was mortified. I remember his name and everything. The way the whole class narrowed in that moment of shame and embarassment. Meanness sucks.
