When I was 21, I had just gone through a terrible breakup and was inconsolable. I remember going on vacation with a friend of mine to visit other friends in Philadelphia. I think I ruined the trip for my friend, because I was so depressed, for which I still feel terrible.
We were wandering in and out of shops in the city and we walked into a bar (lol, this isn't really a drawn-out joke, I promise). It felt like one of those moments that you'll remember all of your life. The bartender (an older man) turned to us and said, "Ladies, let me give you a piece of advice that you'll carry through life with you." For some strange reason, this really lifted my spirits. I thought this would be the life advice I needed.
He said, "Wherever you go...there you are," and then he laughed. I remember being SO disappointed in what he said. I don't know what I thought he was going to say, but that wasn't it. Whenever I hear that phrase now, it reminds me of how young and dumb I was.
