"Wentworth" on Netflix..season 3. this Australia women's prison series compares most favourably with OITNB and now that OITNB is starting to wear a bit thin I think people will find Wentworth extremely engaging even addictive in it's humour, grittiness and sexy bluntness. Great characters, terrific plotting.
A bit like House of Cards took it's cue ( to put it mildly) from the British version, so I think OITNB developed many of its characters and themes from Wentworth and its predecessor "Prisoner" ( 1979-86). However it may also be true, though not likely, that all women's prisons really do have pretty much identical inmate populations, characters, power roles and problems and so there's nothing original left to be written.
Give Wentworth, on Netflix, a try but be warned, it is highly addictive.
