After working hospitality for years, I can say with absolute certainty that they didn't give a flying sh*t about anyone else. They were consumed with their activities and whatnot and the rest of the world doesn't exist. These types of guests were some of my least favorite.

Hotel carpets and bedspreads, even the higher end ones, are notorious for a high ick factor. It's gross that he wasn't wearing shoes but he'll go home with lots of microscopic new friends so maybe it's a win for him?
