As a store owner this is one of our pet peeves also. We may or may not stop the transaction at our registers when a customer, especially when it is a profanity laced conversation. Just our way of teaching some basic etiquette to those self important customers who stop in. We only have to do it once or twice before customers learn to make their purchases phone less.
