I suggest (since you're investing for the long-term) a simple style that is timeless.

-100% wool
-one- or two-button
-notch lapel (but I think you, ALH, would really dig a shawl lapel)

Personally, I'd steer clear of a double-breasted.

Have fun!!
Hummm... I have wondered about double breasted in terms of really wanting to get the wear out of it. The simple/timeless is what I do need. I have seen some shawl lapels that I like, but, dunno... maybe stay more traditional.

Probably go over to the Castro so I will feel comfy trying them on and being fitted. Although I am getting tired of the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area, for this it is good to be close to SF.

Thanks Thinker and Thanks All!!! Some good ideas!

Agreeing with Thinker about the double-breasted. I have one db suit and won't buy another simply because it is aggravating and kind of uncomfortable to negotiate sitting down. I don't know - maybe it is just me.

I have one double breasted tic jacket. Has vents, a pair. No problem sitting. Hmmm. Not sure what to say. I'll try on some ... and see.

Anyone try out the high collared shirts? I really like the looks of these ... and, I have a long neck, so maybe this is good for me.
I've been cruising eBay lately. There's interesting stuff on the site. But since you can't try on .... don't know if that will be a problem. Can't tell the taper of most pants when they are folded, and can't determine the rise, either. Anyone shop on eBay?

jeans and t-shirts most of the time; either vintage, designer "factory" stores or ... well i'm just to mean to spend a fortune on clothes, but i have a tight eye for style and it matters to me. cargo pants. button down shirts. all from the men's department. customised, funky suit jackets. boots, sneakers, bare feet. men's pyjamas.

Thumbs up

I have a casual style. Just jeans and t-shirts. Sometimes button downs. I don't like shorts. Not sure why. If I get a career I'd really, really like to wear men suits. So that should be interesting.

I do! I learned to never buy from a seller with less than 99% positive feedback and? it matters to me that items of clothing come from a 'smoke free' environment, so that also matters in the description of clothing items.
Hope this helps, may you be victorious!

Just an FYI: The latest Detail (men's fashion magazine) says that double breasted is the "must have" style this season!

(but personally, I'm not too big on the double breasted, either).

i agree with the casual!! my idea of dresse up is usually my "good jeans", polished cowboi boots. either a good tee or a button down with a sport coat..
sometimes ill wear my tux shirt "that the sleeves are neatly torn out of" and leather jeans with matching sport coat

Here to join the casual brigade :P I prefer to stick to jeans/cargos and t-shirts/longsleeves/sweatshirts. When dressing up I'm kind of like cody in that I tend to go for the "good jeans." Will wear dress shirts/button downs, polos etc., and dress pants if needed, but really not into the whole suit thing. Luckily I work at a job where the dress code = sports wear.

But...have my first work Christmas party soon and while we don't have to get dressed up to the nines, I'm guessing the usual work clothes won't cut it lol So will have to figure out what to wear for that...ugh

Default for me

I found that I like the sweaters that have the zipper that goes to about mid chest and then would wear a turtle neck or a dress shirt and tie and a pair of nice jeans or my dress slacks and motorcycle boots.

for cas: it is Jeans and tennies and my ball cap and my hoodies

A follow up on eBay.
I'm not doing real well there ... or elsewhere. Lol. What happened to the flannels? The regular wools? The stores and online places have the "super" 100s wool. I can't stand them. I'd worry that o was naked ... they are thin as paper!
I found some middle and heavy weight woolen trousers, but they are very pricey. I like plated, sit at the waist pants.
On eBay, I'm looking at Harris and other tweed jackets. After the first mistake of ordering my size, and finding that vintage runs smaller, I've measured all my parts, and checked with sellers about the measurements of their coats. It's a journey, I'll tell ya. Lol.

On the plus side, I purchased enough ties to open a shop!

I've gotten into sweater vests this year, have a number of them now. I really like the way they look with long sleeve shirts. I can wear a tie or not depending on the event, and with or without a jacket. They're really very versatile.

I'm not too sure about which of two threads about butch clothes to post ... but there are two things on my mind today. Again, re eBay.

While perusing men's jackets, I noticed that there were a lot of tux jackets listed. Some were the ? made stuff, some rentals, etc. There's something for nearly anyone, should you be in the market. Great prices on known quality makers, and good wools, too. Real bargains to be had, just in time for the holidays. Or, next years reunion.

Maybe I'm the only one who did not know this, but there is a lot of things to do before purchasing on line.

To purchase a jacket or coat, one takes a coat of similar material, lays it on a flat surface, and measures the "chest", from armpit to armpit - double this for the correct size; then, measure the sleeve, either from the shoulder seam to end of cuff, or from the midpoint at the back of the neck to the cuff; then, from shoulder seam to shoulder seam. Turn jacket over, and measure from the base of collar to the hem for the length.

Now, the above are the most common measurements given on eBay. There are occasional variations. However, these measurements are typical for a generalized masculine figure. So, you may need to ask about the waist measurement. Or, if appropriate for your shape, the approximate abdominal measurement. It's a lot of work, I know, but worth it if you purchase online. I'm learning things about my body that I normally ignore

Just some musings here and hope to share this info with anyone who has not tried this way of shopping, and currently considers doing so.
