Darkest Hours and Coco
Hi everyone.
Went to see these films yesterday. Darkest Hours is an absolutely brilliant film, the acting is of the highest calibre. And you can see why this is going to scoop a load of awards. It shows a side of Winston that is more human than a lot of films and the enormous task he had to face once he became prime minister. even if you are not into the history side of things it's a film I cannot recommend enough to go and see. A gem of a film and one I will very happily watch again. Coco was for me a film that took a time to get going but it did after a while. I really liked the music and the colours the film had. It actually deals with serious subjects which kids sometimes don't understand, particularly the dementia. It does a very good job at addressing these issues. Overall I liked the film, would I get it on dvd when it comes out? Only to add to my collection. |

Julie & Julia (2009)
I love anything to do with Julia Child, so I rented the movie on cable TV and watched Nora Ephron's screenplay comedy based on the true story about Julie Powell, an fledgling writer stuck in a soul killing job, who decides to cook 524 recipes by Julia Child. Amy Adams as Julie Powell; Meryl Streep as Julia Child.
I enjoyed this movie and recommend it as an great movie! Here's a trailer for Julie & Julia:

There is an extremely good book called France is a Feast: The Photographic Journey of Paul and Julia Child. It's great if you like julia, and the pictures were mostly taken by her husband Paul, who was a very good photographer as it happens. It's really worth a look, you can find it on amazon. |

The Post.
This is the best movie I've seen from 2017. It was excellent. I hope Streep gets the Oscar for this performance, but I don't think she will. And I'm disappointed Speilberg and Hanks didn't get a nomination. I'll watch it again when it comes out on a streaming service. Only next time, I'll watch it with All The Presidents Men—that's the perfect double-feature. |

We saw The Post last week and liked it very much.
Last night we saw Three Billboards and I for one LOVED it. It gets a little dark at times but it's tempered with humor. As an aside...... We were watching the movie and I whispered to my honey that the scenery looked familiar. Well, I googled it and...sure enough. It's filmed largely around Asheville! I recognized the mountain outside Mildred's house specifically since it was obviously horribly mined. That is in Black Mountain. I got lost on that road one day looking for a back way home

The Cooler....(2003)... William H. Macy, Maria Bello, Alec Baldwin
The Cooler, (William H. Macy) is extremely unlucky at gambling, and he owes the Shangri-La casino over 100,000 dollars. He is so unlucky that he is hired as a "cooler," someone to gamble next to high rollers and give them some of his bad luck to stop them from winning. This arrangement works out for awhile, until Bernie has almost paid off his debt and meets a cocktail waitress (Maria Bello). The two start to fall in love and Bernie's luck begins to change. However, the old-fashioned mob boss (Alec Baldwin) isn't going to let Bernie go so easily. Meanwhile, (Ron Livingston) arrives on the scene to help update the business management of the old mobster-run casino. Also starring Joey Fatone and Paul Sorvino as lounge singers. The Cooler was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize in the dramatic competition at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. I really enjoyed this.......... |

The Memory Keeper's Daughter (2008) Emily Watson, Dermot Mulroney
A father separates his son from his twin sister at birth to prevent him and the mother from knowing she was born with Down syndrome. Based on the novel by Kim Edwards. The other night there was a question I believe in a book category and the answer was The Memory Keeper's Daughter. I mentioned to Mary what a good book it was, and also said they had made a TV movie too. Yesterday when she returned from the daily post office run she slapped it down and was all smiles! We watched it last night and it was a real tear jerker in some places, but still pretty good. I suggest the book for sure then if you're interested the movie. |

The Post & Downsizing
Saw these 2 films over a few days ago.
I really was thinking The Post would be my kind of film, After all the cast is very good. But instead i was there 45 minutes in thinking how bored to tears i was. It was a very very slow building film from what i could guess. I didn't stay to find out. Perhaps i just wasn't in the mood to see that kind of film at that time. I will give it another try when its on Netflix or amazon, and see if my verdict changes. I absolutely loved Downsizing, it gets into your head, and you are thinking "would that be possible" its funny and moving & thought provoking about what we are doing to our planet, and how its gonna end up. It does slightly lose sight at the end though, in that you kind of feel that maybe its gone a bit off track at some point. There are the most gorgeous views of Norway in it, and the small/normal size scenes are very cleverly done. I would go and see it again, |

So B. It
Heidi knows her mom loves her. But because of her mother's mental disability, she is unable to care for herself or her daughter. Their loving neighbor, Bernadette, helps out and is a vital part of their family.
The truth about her mother's identity eats away at Heidi. She simply cannot rest until she pieces together Mama's past through clues that appear over the years. Why is her mother terrified of buses? Why do rainy days make her anxious? When Heidi finds some old photos of her mother at a Christmas party held at Hill House Home in Liberty, New York, she decides she must travel there alone in order to discover who her mother truly is. The trip is a frightening yet exciting adventure for determined, courageous Heidi. I dont know what the book was like but the movie was well done. It will take your emotions on a roller coaster tho.

We saw Hostiles last night and liked it very much. The scenery is almost as much a character as the people. I found myself often distracted by the beauty of these places.
The story is incredible and I'm already thinking I need to see if there is a book it's based upon. There were some unanswered questions that I had. But truly, a movie that could easily become a classic.

Based on the true story of the first ground troops to strike back after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S... they kicked some Taliban ass via horseback. Very well done. Highly recommend.

Almost Friends Freddie Highmore, Odeya Rush, Christopher Meloni
Once a promising young chef, Charlie (Freddie Highmore) is now an unmotivated twenty-something who lives at home with his mom and stepfather while working at a small movie theater and living vicariously through his best friend, Ben. His life takes an unpredictable turn however, when he finds himself falling for local barista Amber. Problem is, Amber has her own distractions- her mooching roommate (Jake Abel) a track star boyfriend (Taylor John Smith) and steadfast plans to move to New York City. I really enjoyed it........... |

300 or is it The 300. Pretty bad. And I like action and Gerard Butler. I am taking a non credit online course on the history of ancient greece, and we just did thermopylae and salamis, so I thought I'd enjoy the film. I didn't.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women
Tonight we watched Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. There is so much going on in this movie it's hard to know where to start......It's not about Wonder Woman but there is that, it's not about a Ménage à trois but there is that also.....if anything I'd have to say this movie is about love and accepting all that comes with it and thumbing your nose at society's norms!
Please check this movie out......... |

I TONYA
Went to see this film last night.
I had have never really had any interest in figure skating, hence I didn't know about this or any of the other bits of the story. The film was really good, and the acting was superb. The dark humour in this film is what breaks it up to stop it being too heavy, and you get a sense that this must be what Tonya's humour must be like. The final penalty I thought was very harsh for Tonya. I liked this film a lot, and it looked like most of the cinema audience did too. |
