Default If you're going to be in Chicago and don't mind a bit of walking..........

Check out some of the walking tours offered. I posted the one pertaining to Lincoln Park and gangsters, but there are many others as well.

A block east from the Fullerton Red/Brown line stop at the corner of Halsted/Lincoln/ Fullerton at Julia Porter Park at 2400 N Halsted. Look for your guide with the Free Tours by Foot logo!

Join Free Tours by Foot as we venture through one of Chicago’s well known neighborhoods, Lincoln Park. Famous for hidden gems, hired guns, and hot guitars, our guide will lead you through the neighborhood to view the unique and residential streets. You’ll walk the footsteps of Chicago’s notorious gangsters and learn about how prohibition effected Chicago.

We’ll walk through Lincoln Avenue Bar District and hope to hear the strains of blues guitars from the pubs and music venues. The tour ends at Lincoln Park, the park which the neighborhood is named after. You will be steps away from visiting the Lincoln Park Conservatory or the Lincoln Park Zoo.

Reservations: REQUIRED.

Duration: Tour lasts approx. 2 hours. Total walking is just over one mile (1.6 km).

Cost: This tour is free to take, and you get to decide what, if anything, the tour was worth when it's done.

Default Something new if you're going to be around Chicago....

City Hall 838 W. Kinzie Street Chicago

Enormous restaurant and event space City Hall opened around the middle of June with simple American dishes and an abundance of drinks named with civic puns. Owners hope the 18,000-square-foot space will cultivate a comfortable neighborhood feel with occasional DJ appearances and live music according to a news release.

Culinary director Michael Taus (Charlie Trotter’s, Zealous, Taus Authentic) designed a menu of comfort foods that draws on memories of his mother and grandmother’s classic dishes, according to a news release. These include a grilled cheese with poblano jam, applewood-smoked bacon, havarti, and white cheddar, and chili-garlic chicken wings served with yogurt mint sauce, buffalo-style, or with blue cheese dressing.

A "must" on my next trip to the Windy City...

Default In Chicago and seeking something outdoorsy...

A formerly abandoned stretch of elevated railway track has found new life as the 606. Named after the first three digits in every Chicago zip code. Runs along Bloomingdale Trail between Ashland and Ridgeway. Modeled after NYC’s High Line, The 606 urban hiking trail is the best way to see the city’s neighborhoods with a little nature thrown into the mix. The 2.7-mile elevated pathway along an old railway line passes through neighborhoods like Bucktown, Logan Square, and Humboldt Park, with plenty of cool bars and restaurants along the way to stop off at for a little pick-me-up, including Handlebar and Weegee’s Lounge.

The Obama Presidential Library in Jackson Park is years away from completion, but a new exhibition near the facility's future home pays tribute to the former Illinois Senator in a fasinating way. "The Obama Paintings" is an exhibition made up of nearly 3,000 red- and blue-tinged paintings depicting scenes that correspond to each day of Obama's presidency. Artist Rob Pruitt renders everything from a walk with the Obama family dog, Bo, to State of the Union addresses and meetings with heads of state.

Another reason to take the Blue Line (as if you need one) is some great Thai food from The Sala Pao Shop, Located at 1909 N Western Ave, it's just a quick hop off at the Western stop. It's not an overly extensive selection but the BBQ pork steamed bun & sticky rice mango I inhaled really hit the spot.
