Faux ’50s Diner Ed Debevic’s Is Back (so is the chrome, neon, and theatrically rude servers). 159 E. Ohio St.

Ed Debevic’s, the famously raucous retro diner starring singing, dancing waitstaff, returned to Chicago last week, six years after its original restaurant was demolished in River North. Now located in Streeterville and owned by Bravo Restaurants, the new Ed’s still features diner food served by theatrically rude waiters in a shiny faux-’50s setting with lots of chrome, neon, and sassy signage.

The menu revives many of the classics from the old days, including chili, Ed’s Mom’s Meatloaf Sandwich, and the World’s Smallest Sundae, but it makes a few concessions to the 21st century, namely an Impossible burger. The servers still dress in vintage splendor with buzz cuts, Buddy Holly glasses, and coonskin caps, but times being what they are, they’re less touchy-feely than in days of yore, and instead of dancing on the tables, they’re encouraged to use special ledges and a runway that extends the length of the main dining room.

Default Chicago's Andersonville voted..........

One of the 49 coolest neighborhood's in the world

We polled 27,000 city-dwellers and asked local experts to rank the greatest places for food, fun, culture and community.

The city’s historic Swedish enclave (take note of the flag on the neighborhood's iconic water tower), Andersonville is now better known for its LGBTQ+ nightlife and the bars and restaurants that line the Clark Street corridor. Over the past year, the area has bounced back in a big way, welcoming new bars (Nobody’s Darling, the Bird Cage) and restaurants (Parson’s Chicken & Fish), while events like the Taste of Andersonville have done a top job of showcasing beloved local institutions. The district has always been a desirable place to live, but its proximity to beaches and coastal parks has only made it more appealing during the pandemic. Andersonville is also a community that’s looking forward, launching initiatives like Clark Street Composts – a pilot program that could serve as a model for eco-friendly composting throughout Chicago.

The perfect day: Start off with coffee and pastries from Scandi-inspired bakery Lost Larson, before checking out the vintage knick-knacks at Woolly Mammoth or feminist literature at Women & Children First. Next, stroll along the picturesque Foster Beach, then snag a table at Hopleaf and enjoy mussels and Belgian beer. Round off your day with a drag show at the Bird Cage or a surreal performance of the Neo-Futurists’ Infinite Wrench.

Default “The Office Experience”...

The Shops at North Bridge , Magnificent Mile (520 N Michigan) Friday October 15 2021 - Monday January 17 2022.

Calling all The Office fanatics: The same team that created "The Friends Experience" is back with another nostalgic pop-culture experience that will make you feel like a Dunder Mifflin employee. Spread across two floors, the pop-up features 17 rooms that recreate sets from the show, including the Scranton Business Park workplace (which features Michael's office, Pam's reception desk and Ryan's closet) and Schrute Farms. Guests will be able to ecreate moments like Kevin's chili spill and the Dundie Awards—and you'll also find a few original props and costumes on display.

Don't forget to stop by a gift shop that's dressed up like the Warehouse, featuring merch like "World's Best Boss" mugs, sweatshirts that say "Nard Dog" and staplers (Jello not included). The gift shop will be open to both ticketed and non-ticketed guests, so even those who don't spring for the photo-friendly experience have a chance to buy some branded shirts and tchotchkes.

Default Check out the West Loop......

One of the distinctive features of the West Loop is its vast collection of street art created by numerous artists, present amid the streets lined with restaurants and on the side of overpasses and railway embankments. Painter and muralist Jenny Vyas is one of those artists whose work has helped to shape the former industrial area, adding splashes of color and creativity to the trendy destination for nightlife and dining that it has become.

A self-taught artist, Vyas first became inspired to paint while recovering from a breakup in 2013. She said that much of her work is inspired by “a lot of the darkness in life that we don’t really talk about.”.

Her latest show, “Awaken,” opened last month and is on display at Pilsen Yards through October 31. The show features 15 of Vyas’ paintings, all of which center on themes of vulnerability and finding strength through exploring one’s own demons.

“It’s the show I’ve been working toward for the last five years so it’s been really great to bring it all together,” Vyas said. “It’s my largest body of work, ever.”

Although she’s originally from India, Vyas has lived in Chicago for more than two decades and considers the city to be her home.

Default Time Out says 3 out of 5 stars Oooh Wee It Is specializes in over-the-top soul food dishes that are worth waiting in line for..

Oooh Wee It Is 3 E 83rd St (Chatham) Chicago

I’m of two minds about encountering a line in front of a restaurant when you show up for a meal. On the one hand, it can be frustrating to work up an appetite and arrive expecting to eat, only to have to join a waiting list. On the other hand, when folks are willing to queue up for a table, it typically means that the food being served is something worth waiting for.

Thankfully, the latter absolutely applies to the Chatham location of Oooh Wee It Is, where plates of delicious soul food are often overflowing—much like the parking lot.

Default A Guide to Apple Picking in Metro Detroit

It’s fall in Michigan, prime season for apple picking. The third top producer of apples in the U.S. (after Washington state and New York), Michigan has about 14.9 million apple trees on nearly 800 family-run farms.

A spring freeze turned blossoms to icicles, however, which means there are far fewer apples to pick. Several orchards and mills that traditionally offer pick-your-own apples are scrapping it this year, after losing a large portion of their crops.

There are still apples for sale in most orchard stores and at cider mills, who sometimes buy crops from others in the state. Be sure to call ahead for availability.
