YES! I get so annoyed when I bite into cornbread and it's sweet. Now I just take a pinch to test it before committing. When I make it I like to add in a little garlic and cumin.

Sorry, I am a dissenting vote. Even though my location is temporarily listed in NY, and Chicago is my adopted hometown with an Indianapolis birthtown, I am from strong Southern roots.

The cornbread I prefer is sweet. Yes, Johnny Cakes are good, but you're right, they are sweet and don't belong with my red beans or black-eye peas.

I love a red bean stew poured over not-sweet cornbread....

My daughter used to love Johnny Cakes for breakfast with a little honey on them. I should remind her of that.

I love cornbread of both types, unsweet and sweet, but definitely only unsweet with greens or peas/beans.

However . . .

I admit I love

Now they also make a vegetarian corn muffin mix. The only difference is the regular mix has lard in it and the vegetarian version uses vegetable shortening. When I was a girl I'd make a box of jiffy cornbread mix up and think I was quite the cook. Sometimes I'd double the recipe, use two boxes, and then I fancied myself quite the chef.

Me too, me too! My Mom bought me the Jiffy cake mixes to use in my E-Z Bake Oven! (I had the 1960s turquoise model.) I would serve tiny slices to my family for dessert. (Fortunately only a family of four.)

I had a turquoise E-Z Bake Oven too! Sometimes I ate the mixes straight from the packaging. When my sister busted me, crouched behind the oven with cake mix all over my face, threatened to tell, I converted her on over to my way of thinking - welcome to the dark side.

I didn't cook when I was little. *sniveling and feeling left out*
LOL!

And don't do too much of it as an adult but branching out some with food changes over to vegan. It is a good thing.

Thanks for posting that there is vegan cornbread. You made my day!

The awesome time I had while relaxing down at the coast.... feeling pretty majorly stuffed since Brunch, tho. But I guess it's time to go raid the freezer and find some non-diary ice-cream to savor before bedtime (Toasted Coconut or Key Lime).

Was a recalcitrant child, who had gender issues as a kid, refusing to learn to cook beside my mom. Rather be climbing a tree.

What I learned of cooking was (ironically) from a long ago ex-spouse who had the patience to make a roux for seafood gumbo in of all places, Chicago.
Joy of Cooking has many good recipes, some of which are actually fairly easy to follow. It is my cooking bible.

Btw, assembling the ingredients for the seafood gumbo took as much (or more) patience in 1980 Chicago as the roux. I dub him a saint!

Cooking is not my forte. TG, my Partner can cook. Canned and frozen food all the time would be boring.
However, once we made the most twisted and misshapen Indian samosas. Our friends were fearful when offered one. Tasted good, but scary looking so we got to keep many for ourselves...yum!

I think Chicago takes a hold of one and makes them do things they'd NEVER consider doing in a million years otherwise!

I fear one of my trip there I'll be lead in to some kind of debauchery and never be heard from again.........

I brought her from Virginia to Oklahoma, to a safe place.

I took a gigantic risk, hoping it will pay off.

All of our things have been moved and are in a safe place. I am hoping we find a place of our own soon. My family has been very gracious during this transition but finding a new home is moving up on my list of priorities.

Also, summer is almost over and kindergarten is almost here. Where did the time go?!

A copperhead I killed in backyard about 15 minutes ago ... I was about to let pups out for last pee break but first I always walk the backyard with flood lights on and head lamp ... there he was slithering along in front of the shed and that is the very place they all go to pee ... tapped him on the head with a board. I tire of hiding bodies. The pups knew nothing about him when they all went and peed in front of the shed.

Bye bye Mr. No Shoulders! I hate, absolutely hate these snakes that crawl all over these woods.

I put him on a wooden pallet, took a photo of him and posted it in my gallery.

Don't just dislike snakes, hate them and they scare me. Some bad hutch hiker. My Partner is terrified of spiders...oh, tough ex- Eagle scout leader. I believe some fears are hard wired....snakes and spiders would be good choices.

Today the job I'm trying for is on my mind. I had the interview last Friday and the presentation. It went really well. They said I should know by tomorrow. So of course they are waiting until the last minute. Hope I hear something soon!

How we can be walking around the French Quarter and enjoying the Lakefront in New Orleans one weekend and the next weekend a hurricane is hitting it.
