Stearns,
The thread is back on topic as it should be. It would be nice if you would not keep stirring it back up. This is purely a social thread, not a debate thread and we aim to keep it that way.
Then why would you post this "off-topic" remark?

Stearns,
So, the issue was my fault because I didn't "explain" why I and my family had to decline? I find that interesting. I was under the impression the issue was caused because others took it upon themselves to throw all kinds of conjecture on a simple "I'm sorry, I can't make it."
No, I didn't find it necessary to "explain" why the Strutts were not able to attend. The last thing I expected was a bunch of panties and britches in a bunch, so the apparent necessity of an public explanation didn't occur to me when I posted.
I appreciate your well wishes for my father.
Attempts at good communication are a two-way street. It is not just the reader's responsibility, but the sender's, too. I am done, if you are.

MODERATING:
I really dislike having to do this twice.
I realize that there are some personal issues involved here, trust me, no one here is flying under the radar. NO ONE!
Reporting posts for reasons that apply to others as well, is not going to go over well with me.
Everyone needs to act like adults and take your personal issues out of the thread. I will not ask a third time.
I wish this thread was really a social thread, but I see it more as a some of you are welcome and some of you are not.

Good Morning Tranzman,
Your welcome and if you are into driving, there is always St. Augustine, which is about 3 hours from the Gulf Coast. I am taking my oldest niece and nephew and possibly my youngest niece there next Friday, before the two oldest head back home.
Ocala is gorgeous, but hot. Have fun at Tarpon Springs!!!

Yeah I was raised over on the east coast of Florida, in Jacksonville actually so am very familiar with St. Augustine. It is a beautiful city. :) Thinking we are going to explore up and down the gulf coast a bit and may take them to Homosassa Springs as well as a nice drive down the coast one day. I have a pool so that keeps them super entertained much of the time, but I would like for them to be able to see some of our gorgeous state too. You're a great help, with wonderful ideas. Thank you :)

3000 vets on motorcycles from across the USA paraded in D.C. the Sunday before Memorial Day, while a solitary, saluting Marine greeted them out on Constitution Avenue... the Marine stood at salute for 3 straight hours, while the parade of roaring bikes kept on coming.... it is held in remembrance of those who've fallen in the military.... the event (or the group) is called Rolling Thunder... George Bush used to meet these bikers before they parade**.. the camera is on the Marine a lot... watch his struggles with his emotions, and his struggles with holding that salute... the way he salutes is very touching... his head lowered, his eyes down, in reverence for the fallen... I can imagine what he was feeling... and as I watched him, I could feel it too.... it got to be overwhelming for him... and the tears started flowing... watch what he says when he finally breaks, but keeps right on holding that salute...

I haven't made it back to walk on the beach, which was one of my fave things to do once I got off from work at 11pm. Very quiet and relaxing...
I lived right off of the LPGA exit on I-95, and when my dad died, my brother sold the house..I took my oldest nephew by our old house last week, he hadn't seen it since my dad died. The guy who bought it, did an excellent job of renovating it and my brother knows the guy who bought it. So we know the house is being taking care of.
I had a good Friday and my roommate is off this weekend, so I get to sleep in.
Hope you had a good Friday,
Zimmy
Zimmy,
We went to Daytona Beach at the end of March. It was awesome to walk on those white sandy beaches again, but damn it was cold! lol I need to go back over that way here in the next month or so and check on my Dad, plus I promised I'd come do the windows on their house for them.
It's a good Friday here, hoping yours is as well.

And good Saturday morning to the rest of my Floridian compadres. I am having a cup of coffee before starting my day, Mr. Strutt is out mowing the lawn and the Princess is still asleep. When hy is done, we are heading out to our favorite local dive for the best breakfast in St. Pete :linecook: Just another typical Saturday morning in your all-American, queer suburban family :)
My husband and I were up until 12:30 last night playing Super Mario Galaxy on Wii...I've never been much of a gamer, but I have to admit I have gotten addicted to Wii. Any other paradise dwellers a Wii fan?

Good evening, Floridians (f)
Got back from my parents today and have them all taken care of for now. My dad's three-week post-op checkup was great...he was released from the surgeon's office and into the care of his regular cardiologist on Tuesday. I got some things done around the house for them, including power-washing the lanai and pool area...thank the goddess hairdressers have really strong arms :) It was nice to see Dad up and around and I know it did him good to see his granddaughter.
Mr. Strutt and I are taking the munchkin to Busch Gardens tomorrow, which will be a first for all of us. I can't believe I've been in Florida almost 13 years and this will be my first visit.
Have a lovely night (f)

uh, should i tell ya about what happened this past spring?
i was puttin the big ass twigs / tree limbs that had fallen from the winter into the fire pit. well, they was kinda wet so i figured they just needed a little help to catch em on fire and burn em. so, i had a small amount , well it seemed like a small amount of gasoline from last year i thought would be perfect to give that fire a little incentive. well, it was to much gasoline:|...lol. the fire shot up about 20 feet into the air, next thing i knew the branch that is / was 20 feet above the fire pit is now on fire. so, what do i do, i take a picture of it:cheesy:...lmao. it didnt take long for the fire to chill out and go back to normal height but i thought for sure someone from the neighborhood was gonna call the fire department.:|

Good morning, Florida (f)
It was a long day at Busch Gardens yesterday...we took off about 9:30 yesterday morning and didn't get home until 10:30 last night. Verdict: I like BG much better than Disney. The park was not as crowded, it is absolutely huge, the food (while still overpriced) was not nearly as expensive and there is a ton of stuff to do there. Plus, it is only 40 minutes from my house and I found out an annual pass that includes both Busch Gardens/Adventure Island (and free parking) is only $146...what a deal.
Katie is not able to ride most of the rides yet since she is only 45" tall and the height requirement on most of the major attractions is 48"+. But there were still quite a few rides she could go on and she loves animals, so she had herself a great time. She passed out cold on the way home and there was going to be no getting that child in the shower when we got there, so I threw on her PJs and put her in bed as is. And she is still sound asleep :)
I wish I could have tried a few of the bigger coasters myself, but it was only the three of us and I wasn't about to stand in line for an hour by myself while Mr. Strutt stayed with Katie...so I will have to wait until we go again with a group or something. There hasn't been a coaster built yet that I won't ride and I am dying to get on ShieKra, which has a 200-ft., 90-degree vertical drop at 70 mph. Oh yeah, baby
Hope you all have a great day! (f)

Morning fellow Floridians,
Haven't been on a lot the last few days because I am moving into my cave. Spent 4 hours stuck here yesterday while Brighthouse re-wired from the pole to the house. But at least now I have all new cable, so there should be no problems, right?
Next we had to dodge a few showers because my truck does not have a topper. That said, we only managed two loads of moving yesterday. Slept at the new place last night, and it was so good waking up to zero stress! I am a happy man. :)

Good Evening Everyone,
Mrs. Strutt, sounds like you and your family had a blast. I went there over 20 years ago, and we got my mom on the Congo ride. Little did we know, but she is deathly afraid of water but went on it anyways.
Tranzman, glad you like your new cave. Moving is for the birds and so is Brighthouse. I pay $48 a month for the high speed internet, and sometimes I get booted.
Today was my oldest niece's birthday party and we all had fun. Since her and her brother came down six weeks ago, I have gained four sunburns and several hundred miles on my odometer driving to pick them up and taking them places. I am glad they came down to visit, but I am not to thrilled about the sunburn on my shoulders. But, it made the kids happy and that is all that matters.
Have a good night and see you all in the morning,
Zimmy

I'm sure everyone has heard about National Organization for Marriage's (NOM) "Summer for Marriage" bus tour. They're going to 17 cities this summer to fund-raise for their political campaign against equal marriage. So far, they've been outnumbered by LGBT & friends anti-protestors. The anti-protests have been silent in nature, which I think is a good strategy, lest we be accused of trying to deprive anti-gay religious groups of their First Amendment rights.
NOM will be in Tampa on Sunday, August 8, 2010 from 2:00pm - 3:00pm, if anyone is interested in taking part in a silent protest.
Here's a link to an LGBT site that is keeping up with the tour and posting info and pics: http://prop8trialtracker.com/2010/07/17/do-you-see-my-love-a-beautiful-gathering-storm-rains-on-noms-parade-in-new-york/. A note of interest: NOM is underreporting the number of anti-protestors and are not showing anti-protestors in their photos.
P.S. NOM is a front for the Mormon Church. They donated $2 million alone to try to get Maine's equal marriage law repealed.

Durrrr- Yeah moving sucks bigtime! But thankfully I have my sis and nephew to lend me a hand and keep me entertained as well. :) I was happy to read that you and your nephew went tool shopping rather than grill shopping. lol That could have proved dangerous.

Good Aftenoon Tranzman,
Luckily it is mainly on my shoulders, so applying Aloe and lotion to it is easy. I am thinking of heading up to Publix here in a bit, one of the girly mags I was reading, recommended Aloe Vera Body Butter by a holistic company. I am thinking that might work better than applying Aloe and then body lotion. At this point, I am hoping anything will work....
I had quite a few problems with Brighthouse when I had my apartment in Orlando, if you had more than one laptop using the internet at once, their modem would crash. I am not having any problems so far here at my house and I am hoping that it doesn't change.
When I moved to Seattle, I had gone through everything I owned and donated quite a bit of it, threw half of it away, and gave the rest away to friends. So when I moved back home from Seattle and moved to Palm Coast, the move was easy. I had two car loads of stuff.
Have a good day,
Zimmy

Currently, hy is weed-whacking and edging the backyard. The good news is, I haven't heard any curses from hym cutting the cord or yelps from electricity racing through hys body :|

Hello fellow Florida peeps!!! Seems everybody had good weekends even if it involved functional chores like moving!!! The summer is leaving us quickly and I am a sad dancing lamb. My week is filled with work so it looks like Tuesday/Wednesday may be my only day we play.
I love the beaches, fresh water springs, the everglades, swimming with manatees, exploring natural caves, college football and all the tasty treats cooked up in a cast iron skillet!!! :) The many local varieties of those delicious crustaceans we call shrimp. I am preferential to Mayport shrimp and then the Florida Keys Pink shrimps they run a close second and are very Yummy!!! My local seafood supplier is saved in my phone. Anyone ever had fresh water bream?? Not only are they fun to catch on the cane pole with a balled up piece of sandwich bread but they are easy to clean and grill. The skin peels right off exposing the whitest, flakiest of meat. I love this state and feel very sad/angry when I encounter hate and ignorance.
I was driving Ms to the farmers market yesterday and we came upon a truck with 9 bumper stickers scattered across the back window. As I was reading them I started having tiny explosions in my head and could already feel the hurt my Ms was enduring from her experience of this displayed hate. Here is what we read.
I'll keep my money, my freedom and my guns and you can keep the "CHANGE"
"If this shit offends you, you need a history lesson." It had a confederate flag in the middle.
"It's a southern thang Yankees will never understand" Another big flag.
Another was a conferderate flag that says "HERITAGE not hate."
Another confederate flag that says "You think this flag represents hate and slavery? YOU ARE WRONG!"
The rest said the same thing "History not Hate" with a flag on it.
I am a white 4th generation Floridian. What I have never been able to love is our history. Just this particular state alone was created first from attempting genocide and wiped out almost all the Native Americans. Then we used the Native Americans, African Americans and Latino coummunity to build it and make it what it is today. My parents and family tried very hard to socialize me with racist, bigoted, and discriminatory behaviors. When I come across these kinds of situations my knee jerk emotional reaction is anger and shame, then a need to engage in some way that may benefit the fight against racism. In the moment sometimes for me it is really hard to evaluate what that fight looks like. My parents have that shit ingrained in them and they may never change. With them I have to call em out all the time. Sometimes so much so that it ruins whatever family event that is going on at the time and I am ok with that!! I have created the loss of some friendships by calling people out time and time again. Some friendships had been lifelong, some not so much, some straight friends, and some queer friends. I have found that it doesn't matter who I call out or how I call em out it is never received well when calling out another human on their racism.
From one fellow Floridian to another I would like to talk about how you all handle racist, bigoted, and discriminatory situations when they come up. I would love to hear what everyone has to say on this topic no matter if your roots to Florida are new or old. We all seem to love this state and what it has to offer us nature and entertainment wise, so I thought we could have a discussion about the unprogressive nature of this state and how it effects us on a daily basis. What we can do to change it and make our state a southern state that has pride based on a whole different moral compass??
uh, should i tell ya about what happened this past spring?
i was puttin the big ass twigs / tree limbs that had fallen from the winter into the fire pit. well, they was kinda wet so i figured they just needed a little help to catch em on fire and burn em. so, i had a small amount , well it seemed like a small amount of gasoline from last year i thought would be perfect to give that fire a little incentive. well, it was to much gasoline:|...lol. the fire shot up about 20 feet into the air, next thing i knew the branch that is / was 20 feet above the fire pit is now on fire. so, what do i do, i take a picture of it:cheesy:...lmao. it didnt take long for the fire to chill out and go back to normal height but i thought for sure someone from the neighborhood was gonna call the fire department.:|
I caught some tree limbs on fire once. It involved gasoline soaked tennis balls and two tennis rackets. :mohawk:
Good morning, Florida (f)
I wish I could have tried a few of the bigger coasters myself, but it was only the three of us and I wasn't about to stand in line for an hour by myself while Mr. Strutt stayed with Katie...so I will have to wait until we go again with a group or something. There hasn't been a coaster built yet that I won't ride and I am dying to get on ShieKra, which has a 200-ft., 90-degree vertical drop at 70 mph. Oh yeah, baby
Hope you all have a great day! (f)
That was nice for you to not make them wait. I get motion sick on coasters so I am the one that waits!!! Glad your vacation has been joyful. :mohawk:
Good Evening Everyone,
Today was my oldest niece's birthday party and we all had fun.
Have a good night and see you all in the morning,
Zimmy
I have purchased more sunblock this summer than in the past 3 years combined. Lots of sun time with company!!! :mohawk:
My brother donates to this organization. It would be worth the drive for me to go if possible and protest!!! Thanks for the info Stearns!!! :mohawk:
The rest of the pack- Wishing you all a safe and happy weekend. :)
We are heading to the beach after this wonderful coffee is gone, for an afternoon of relaxation :)
I am still having a cafe Bustello experience!!! Have a great day at the beach!!!:mohawk:

Great topic, weatherboi. Red-neckery and good ol' boys are alive and well in Florida, that's for sure. If a bigoted behavior occurs in my presence, I speak up and so does my wife. She was appalled (and still is) by the sheer number of bigoted bumper stickers and billboards when she first started coming to Florida. Are we the only state with multiple anti-choice billboards lining both sides of an interstate???? It's really embarrassing. Offensive bumper stickers got really bad during the Amendment 2 issue in 2008, when Florida added its THIRD anti-gay marriage amendment to the state constitution. We organized a protest downtown and experienced cat-calls, drivers angrily revving their engines and laying rubber, but we also got a lot of honks of support. Some people even parked their cars and joined us. Soon also wore a t-shirt around town that said, "When Do I Get to Vote on Your Marriage?" She got quite a few dirty looks and a clerk at Publix felt the need to try to confront her on the 'sanctity' of marriage.
Soon and I have a plan for offensive bumper stickers. We just ordered a batch of rainbow stickers with the words EQUAL RIGHTS on them. And, I'll say no more about that...
Red-neckery and good ol' boys are alive and well in Florida. Unless it would place one in danger, I feel it's important to speak up and do what you can - whether it's in your own circle with family and friends, in the workplace, or out in public.
Looking forward to hearing others' thoughts on this, too.

Florida is red-neck I would think that with all the latin communities there it wouldn't be but I guess not. Haven't been there in a while many years so I guess I wouldn't know. When I lived in Kansas City, MO it was very red-neck and Confederate flags all around I couldn't stand that!! And I was just thinking about relocating to either Florida or Arizona don't know which..:dozey::hrmph:

It's a quiet day at the Strutt abode...I made homemade buttermilk waffles and sausage for brunch and we are going to get in some pool time in a bit when Mr. Strutt is done with hys yardwork.
Currently, hy is weed-whacking and edging the backyard. The good news is, I haven't heard any curses from hym cutting the cord or yelps from electricity racing through hys body :|
cant wait for lazy days in the pool

yeah, i have seen some of them that i just want to ram my truck into their bumper. the idiots. my biggest complaint about some of them is, how does someone explain to their child. the child has just read that bumper sticker and starts asking questions. that is when i really get upset. i mean, some of them piss me off but when a child is readin these and askin...well, thats another thing.
when living in kentucky during the same sex marriage vote, kentucky also had the bumper stickers showing "one man, one woman = marriage" ( only they was symbols of man and woman ) so, a bunch of us went around and if we seen a vehicle parked at like a grocery store, we would put a symbol of either a man or a woman over one of theirs. so, it would be seen as "one man + one man" or one woman + one woman = marriage. i couldnt tell ya how many people would never look at their bumper sticker for months and would never notice it was changed. ya know?

Good Evening Weatherboi,
I have been applying a sunblock with an SPF of 45 before I go swimming and that isn't working...I look like a lobster, hehe..
For your discussion, I am adding my two cents. I to will stand up for myself and nearly lost my family as a result of coming out. My dad, was born to Southern parents who raised him, that if you weren't white, straight and Christian, you weren't allowed in his house. In my early 20's someone, I am not sure who it is; even to this day, went and told him that I was gay. I felt my first time of being discriminated against by him. I stayed in the closet until he passed away when I was 28. After the reaction I got from him, it took me another 3 years to tell my mom. She is cool about it and now supports me. I have lost two jobs as a result of my bosses finding out. The first job, the manager was a complete bitch, and threatened me with my job. The store I worked at was 99% women and they all felt threatened is what she told me. So I told her, that if she wrote me up for sexual discrimination, I would be calling the feds on her happy ass. Two days later, she called me into her office and on the write up paperwork, she had noted that I was causing an offensive work environment. That night, I emailed the ACLU and gave them, her name, the company name, store number and the date of the incident. I also contacted my HR dept and explained to them, what she was doing to all of the employees in the store. The ACLU kept an eye on her until the store closed earlier this year and she is now out of a job...I am all up for change in this state, and the only way that is going to happen, is if we get the politicians who don't understand the gay community out of office.
Have a good night and thanks for the discussion,
Zimmy

Good morning Floridians :)
Well I'm not one of you yet, but I'm working on it! The paperwork on the house is moving forward, but at a snail's pace. So frustrating. I thought I'd be there months ago...
On a nicer note...my FL family is mostly centered around Jacksonville...about 100 of them that all look alike (picture a little clone army...yea, that's us). They're very conservative, very Christian...in fact my uncle just became a pastor at a Baptist church.
It's ironic that my mother, the liberal atheist who supports gay rights, is skeeved out by my relationship with a woman. She knows...she just won't talk about it.
My FL family, which we would expect to reject it based on religious grounds however, has been warm and welcoming and completely accepted Scoote and her son as a part of the family...just saying if you love her, then she's family too. They said they couldn't wait to meet Scoote and her son at our family reunion in August (crossing fingers we get there in time!).
Last night, Scoote and I were goofing around on facebook and she made a comment about needing me to hook her up with all my FL family. So....I did. I sent friend suggestions to about 32 of them who are most active on FB. And, even though it was about midnight, she had a few immediately accept. I wonder how she'll react when she opens her FB this morning and sees more than a dozen new friends/family members, and more no doubt coming...and the messages welcoming her. :)
Sometimes, people can surprise you... :rrose:

P.S. Zimmy- I know it's too late now, but the next time you get sun burned use a sponge or rag and drizzle white vinegar all over the sunburn areas ASAP, leave on for a minute or two then take a cool shower and apply aloe or a good moisturizer. The vinegar stops the cooking process and takes the heat out.

I am heading up to Forsyth GA early tomorrow morning to take my sis and nephew to meet her husband who is driving from KY to pick them up. I have my laptop with me, so I'll be on sometime tomorrow afternoon/evening.
Wishing you all a safe and happy weekend! :)

Good morning fellow Florida peeps!!!
I finally got caught up on everybody's posts from this week. For all of you traveling, please be safe!!! For all of you relaxing, enjoy it while you can. For all that are venturing out and about, don't forget the sunscreen!!!
Thanks to all that took the time to answer my post about racism, discrimination, and bigotry. I have something some more questions but haven't had time to respond or compose a post yet. :)
We are celebrating Snow and her day this weekend!!!
Last night was a relaxing mix of composing a playlist and the making of some delicious banana and blueberry pancakes!!!
Today her desire is mussells, so I will be preparing the delicious little bivalves in a white wine sauce over pasta early this evening.
Tonight we will be heading out to go shimmie and shake.
It is urban night, yayyyyy us!!!

Morning, everyone (f)
Sounds like the northeast Florida contingent is doing well. Snow, I am glad to hear you had a nice birthday.
Mystic - I'm sure someone will be posting something if another gathering is ever in the works.
JediMaster - greetings from Pinellas :)
Hope everyone is well...I am having a cup of coffee before running some errands and picking Jordan up from the airport this afternoon. If you hear loud bangs, booms and general chaos coming from the direction of west-central Florida around 2:00 p.m., it means Mr. Strutt has gotten home from work, hy and Jordan are already on the rampage, and you should think about sending me some energy...if not actual weaponry :|
Have a great day!

Good Morning Everyone,
Hope you all are having a good day! I officially signed up for college on Wednesday and I will be taking Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 and Microbiology...I have to take the classes at the New Smyrna Beach campus, so I will be driving 45 miles...but it is going to be worth it in the end.
My classes start August 30th, five days after my best friend has her second baby boy.
Have fun!!

I will see if I can make it, since I will be starting college on August 30th. If I can make it, do you know of any motels in the area? Since I will be driving almost 3 hours there, I will be tired afterwards.
Thanks!
