Hey Sassy,
Saint Augustine is always a great visit. On the main thoroughfare (the cobble stone street) there is a little place that sits behind a chocolate shop. It is not mentioned on travel boards or in the brochures, but it is a Bakery in a little stone building in the back yard behind the tall coquina wall. You can get a mini loaf of stone baked bread, a small bowl of picadillo, a cookie and soda for like 5 bucks. Really very good. and a cheap find.

There is a new pirate museum, it was a bit pricey but decent. The trolley is always kind of neat and relaxing..... student and military discounts can be had... go to the booth on the main thoroughfare.

On the trolley trip, you can stop by the Monks Vineyard for tastings. ALso, there is a para sailing boat, helicopter rides and lots of other historical places to go. As the nations oldest city... lots to be seen

There is a sightseeing cruise in the Matanzas Bay...by the Santa Maria Pier...and the sunset one is best...to see dolphins and manatee. The old streets of "downtown" offer some really cool, neat little shops but one must walk them to find them..as they are "hidden jewels" amongst them. Nombre de Dios has a really old, really neat grounds and cemetery to it...that is that HUGE steel cross heading north on A1A. There is the Foiuntain of Youth....and they have an "observatory" tour that is awesome...you would really enjoy that! The Trolley offers a Haunted Ghost Tour later at night if that is appealing to you! Hope these help as well. I have been going to St. Augustine for many,many years..and still always find something cool. There is the Old Fort right on the Bay...Very fun suggestions. Thanks so much! :)

Flagler Beach is awesome. I lived there for two years, prior to my 6 months in Jax...and I LOVED it. My favoritest place besides St. Auggy!Tomorrow. I think I will hit one of them up by St Augustine. I heard I should check out Flagler beach so maybe tomorrow is a beautiful day for that too!

It's gorgeous right now! I'm at the mall picking up my niece's birthday present. Glad to hear that you are felling better and I hope your mom gets well and soon!

I was able to control myself at the Hello Kitty store, hehe. My niece will be thrilled when she sees her new HK bookbag for school.

Isn't this all of FL this week? hehe.. last couple days I've gotten downpours. Doesn't change the temperature! I was amazed because when I first got to FL a bit over 2 weeks ago all the rain I kept running into was a 5 min pour then it was gone. a few times this happened till the other night boy was I surprised with that crackin' thunder. I wanted to hide under my bed! haha! Kinda sucks as I been wanting to hit up the beach.

So I went to get groceries at Walmart when I first got here. Walmart is reasonable priced. Not sure they have all the fresh fruits although. I was so surprised at the price of oranges grown in FL and the quality! I'm guessing they ship most of them, make some money on that and keep the shitty ones here to sell expensive. haha.

So today, I try a local Publix. I loved their bakery, deli area. Their fruits were a bit more pricier but looked fresher. There fresh veggies looked very fresh and great priced so I stocked up! I get to the meat area and I was surprised to see that FL has it's own chicken fresh at 6.99 lb. wow! Then I saw 3 hamburger patties 80 lean for 4.00. I thought to myself wow I can get a double burger cooked at a fast food joint for 1.00. I passed up the chicken and ground beef. LOL

Yeah Publix is a decent store but can be a bit pricey. I like WholeFoods. They usually have their patties like 10 for 10.00 when on sale and often have other sales.

I buy a side of beef at a time and so I get all natural beef for 4.00 bucks a pound across the board. So, T-bones, ground beef, roast or ??? is all 4.00 a pound. Just have to have a big freezer.

Try to find local folks who can split a side with you, or who offer fresh eggs and such. I get eggs harvested the day I order them from a friend and they are amazing... 5 bucks a dozen delivered. I am sure you can find local folks in ST Aug that will do the same.

My favorite store is Publix and their five grain Italian bread is very delicious. I don't like to shop at Wal-Mart due to the unclean grocery area.

St Augustine has a farmers market at their Ampitheater, we go to the Beaver Street Farmers Market shop at BJ's and get our meat at Carol's Meat Shop on the west side of Jax. The ampitheater Farmers Market in St Augustine has meat cheese and seafood.

Yes on the farmers market! Our local WalMart seems to play soccer with the produce, and Publix is good but expensive and often not the local seasonal stuff. I can't see buying expensive California grown produce when the local stuff is in season. :seeingstars:

I found (on my second try) a wonderful family owned farmers market here...what they don't grow themselves they bring in from other local farmers. What isn't available fresh locally, they bring in through a network of small farmers in other areas of the country.

The quality is excellent and the prices are much lower...and I like the idea of putting my money in the hands of small farmers and growers instead of the corporate chains.

I shop at Publix 80 percent of the time. I shop CostCo for bulk purchases. And every so often I get dragged kicking and screaming to shop at WalMart. Publix produce is always nicer. Walmart is always cheaper on everything. In our area Publix runs a large wrap/advertisement in the Thursday paper listing the week's best sales/deals. And often that's how we shop for meats -- pick up good deals and make good use of our freezer.

If my hours weren't so weird I'd do more of my shopping for produce at locally owned shops and farmers markets. There are at least 2 in my area, plus plenty of small farmers rent booths at the local flea market on the weekends. You get some great deals on locally grown veggies that way. I bet if you pick up a newspaper early in the week (probably whatever day the Food section publishes) it'd have listings for those kinds of events.

Most of the time I shop publix but there is a produce stand near but they are not so good, so I must keep my eyes open for another place ...I prefer buying local.

I really need to take advantage of these historic sites. I guess it's free entrance for residents. So that's the plan for the week coming up. Hoping to hit the beach early tomorrow!

Hey Ruffy...in Flagler Beach, on the Square, just off A1A there is a farmer's market every Fri & Sat...really, really great local produce! Of course, if you go on down A1A into Daytona Beach, turn right on SR40, and follow it out past interstate, on left is a HUGE Farmer's Market/Flea Market and the produce there IS awesome. Visit the Pickle Booth...hugs wooden barrels of fresh pickles in every flavor you can name...FYI the Garlic Pickles are to die for...BUT only if single OR both buy and eat one...<smiles>Thanks everybody for the replies! When I was kid and teenager it rained every day in the summer here in Northwest Fla. You could have set your watch by it ;) It's not nearly as consistent these days. Even though Florida is a tropical region, we've actually been experiencing drought conditions for like, a decade.
Don't let the rain keep you inside. Storms blow in and back out again rather quickly. Drop by a Dollar store and pick up plenty of cheap umbrellas to keep in convenient places (Work, home, car, gym, etc.). I don't spend real money on umbrellas either. Sure as you do, you'll forget it's your good one and try to use when a hurricane is rolling in -- it'll get turned inside out and be useless after that. LOL! :) ... Glad to see you got to the beach!

I am not sure if I will be attending, but you should go to all of the vendor booths at Lake Eola. The swans are gorgeous! I live in Orlando and I love going when I get the chance!

Occupy Jacksonville Assembly Set for Hemming Plaza

A website called OccupyJacksonville is calling for people to meet at noon Saturday in Hemming Plaza for a peace and solidarity meeting.
Geno Burch is a supporter. "With the people joining together then we can have our voice be heard because the top corporations have ignored us for so long," said Burch.
The leaderless group is spreading its message using social media.
It has more than a thousand followers on its Facebook page and 300 plus on Twitter.
The demonstrators say they stand against corporate greed, social inequality and global climate change.
"Our deficit is at an all-time high, our dollar is at an all-time low, unemployment rates aren't going anywhere...people are mad and they're not going to take it anymore," said Burch.
The Occupy Jacksonville folks say Saturday's meeting in the Hemming Plaza is just to organize what is expected to be an even larger, national movement come October 15th.
Despite more than 700 demonstrators being arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge (http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=221395) this past weekend, Occupy Jax supporters say their meetings will be peaceful showing of solidarity.

Well, hello Florida! It's been ages since I've peeked on the board. Heard a bit of news that makes me more inclined to do more than the occasional peeking in the future...I've missed it here :)

So, RDC version of the past couple of years: Mr. S and I are doing fantastic and our beloved daughter started first grade this year, if you can believe it. I own my own salon now, Mr. S is still at Home Depot and we are just hanging out in west-central Florida, loving life :)

Lots of funky weather yesterday, which gave us an excuse to put up the Halloween decorations. I'm waiting for my husband to come home so we can finish up. Wait until hy sees what a mess I've made of the spider webs :shocking:

That was some serious rain and wind. No rain the last two days here in Gulfport, but it is really humid. Apparently, we have drier air moving in toward the end of the week, though. Friday is supposed to be gorgeous, so since the kids are out of school, another gymnastics mom and I are taking our kids and Katie's BFF to a pumpkin patch. I am ready for fall stuff!

The festival is all in the park around the lake and the parade is on the streets around it. My favorite parking spot is in the garage that houses Avis rental cars.

I am off that day and I will say, that if you have never been to downtown Orlando, it is better to carpool and arrive atleast two hours early. When it gets close to the start of the parade, the police start shutting down streets.

I am open to whatever time you all want to meet up!

The thing is it used to be you'd always get morons. You still get morons but the event is sometimes more family friendly at times. I know anyone harrasing a kid now would probably be put through a wall by a lot of the bears now.

I'm having a hella rough time lining up another job -- this one has about 6 months left and then I'll be laid off. I keep seeing work possibilities in my field in the Washington/Oregon area so I find myself daydreaming about ferry boats. (Too much Grays Anatomy, I guess. LOL)... But realistically, if I don't like Florida winters... what am I thinking?! ... Any northern transplants in the Sunshine state? Think I'd suffer extreme culture shock if I had to make the move?

I'm a transplant from upstate NY down to south Florida....and there's definitely a world of difference. It would be less traumatic going to the Oregon/Washington area....but still darn cold compared to what you're used to.

I lived in Seattle oh-so-long-ago and it's more rain than snow....beautiful spring, summer and fall....and you need a good coat for winter.

Upstate NY? Run away, just run away. Fifteen feet of snow in a winter is just too much for me.

When I moved to Flint, Michigan at 15 years old, I loved it. After three years of living between Flint and Ann Arbor, Michigan and Pittsburgh, PA; I would probably do it again. My hands and feet use to get cold first and then the rest of my body. To this day, I still wear socks on my feet in the winter time and I make sure to have a few pairs of gloves. I was born and raised in Daytona Beach and it used to get so cold on the coast from the sea air mixed in with the cold... :tea: Here is some hot cocoa for you!

I agree with Jo. Seattle is gorgeous and Boston, is cold but beautiful!

me too! :) i'll post here closer to my visit so we can arrange something. i'm flying into atlanta then visiting my sister in ft. gaines (about 2 hrs north of tally) from the 18th-23rdish, then i'll be in tally for about a week. so plenty of time to have coffee or whatever. unfortunately i'm dependent on other folks/the bus system for transportation so traveling outside of tallahassee isn't much of a possibility this trip :(

We were just at Siesta Keys at the beginning of March and it was beautiful! We love that whole area from Bradenton thru the Siesta Keys! Let us know when you are planning on going so we can meet up!

Today is the Italian Festival here in Tampa!! Can't wait to go have some great food and learn more about Italian cultures and see Guy in His element! :)

I have an aunt in TX Flutter. I almost considered going there then I landed jobs here.

I just went to Sarasota and Siesta Key on Saturday. The water and beach was great, but holy it was packed! Took me awhile to get across town and 20 mins to find parking. For me to get out that way again will take an early wake up and possibly a night over.

I pretty much been all over FL now except for Tallahassee and up north there. . When I first got here and on some of my days off I like to explore this state. hehe. Another great place I found for picnics is Cypress Point Park in Tampa. I think my fav is still St Augustine ...

yo yo yo yo. that sounds fantastic a! I just asked off for the 29th which is in 2 sundays. I would be down and it's been way to long. . Us FL folks are due for a get together and with this warm weather the water, bbq and some cold ones sounds perfect! I think Sundays work best for us right now however May, June, July, August all sounds good :P Just give me at least a weeks heads up so i can request a day or two. Look forward to it!

alright here are the details first the addy is 14436 sw 34th terrace rd ocala florida its exit 341 off I 75. I'm grilling burgers and hotdogs so if everyone can bring a side dish and lazy some desserts sound fantastic maybe potato salad coleslaw chips and things like that would be awesome...everyone bring what they would like to drink...i have one lrg cooler so maybe ruffy if u have an additional cooler u can bring that would b super...i will have some beers on hand ...the time is noon so come anytime after...my number is 253-961-4226 so call if u are needing directions...i have had some folks try and get here with their gps and it has taken them some kind of way...way out of their way so i'd google my addy first and make sure it it correlates with ur gps. alright fantastic see u floridians then:byebye:
