View Full Version : Old Stuff / New Stuff
Do you tend to like new stuff or old stuff better?

For me, that would depend greatly on what "stuff" we are discussing. For example, I love old cars... but on the flip I also love new electronics.

I prefer old stuff...and that includes people, too (I don't do kids).
Theo :bouquet: ....who is weird that way.

I really like old things that were designed to be serviced or fixed and last. If that kind of thinking had prevailed, we would have a lot less in landfills!
Some things old like plumbing and wiring I'd rather update.
I have to say after taking a look under the carpet in my little 1940's bungalow at the original wood flooring, the quality of the wood is amazing and very much worth refinishing!
there are some new green home design products that I like very much such as recycled glass counter tops and composting garbage disposals.
And I'm never giving up my Sunbeam perculator! Never!

Depends on the stuff. But just in general I think old stuff more so than new stuff. I do like new electronics but I love the old games. I keep a new truck but love antique cars and muscle cars. I love a old knucklehead Harley, but prefer the dependability of the newer models, not to mention the suspension is also much smoother. So I think some of both is a good thing, old and new.
Cute topic

OMG...I HATE new electronics! I was horrified to learn they stopped making albums! Then, the VCR was replaced by the DVD and now by Blue something. And my daughter just told me they dont make tvs like the one I have...you know..the one with substance...no flat screen or flat back. It doesnt look like it was put thru the mangler. HA! Some of you dont even know what a mangler is!!!! Keep those damned new electronics away from me!

I can't fairly choose either option in the poll because I like both. I love vintage clothes, old muscle cars, historic homes, etc. But I also love my new big-ass flatscreen, my 3 new computers, and a ton of various other new electronics. I guess I'll just stand in the middle of the road on this one... :)
At the moment my old dishwasher isn't working , so it would have to be new.

I had to vote for old stuff, I have a real thing for old (haunted) buildings, of which we have far too many on this side of the pond, but we also have some great flea markets, again in really old places, one's in a victorian train station, which is now a metro station, whic always has lots of old stuff for sale there.
But then again, without new stuff, would we be able to communicate in this way??
I was undecided until I thought about in terms of memories vs. experiences.
I picked new experiences over old memories.

Depends on the stuff
I need more details to make a good decision

As witnessed by my sore back, we keep everything.

Both.
I love old movies and music but I also love finding a new artist.
I love antiques.
I love old linens.
I sometimes love vintage jewelry, but it depends on the history/source.
I love new electronics.
I love new clothes/shoes.
And I love a new bottle of perfume.

I know this is on purpose. No one can convince me otherwise. "Planned Obsolesence" (I can't spell it, but I know what it is)
You spelled it right. :balloon:
I hear you about stuff designed to be replaced... drives me nuts. Of course, there's also the "I want" consumerism syndrome -- people wanting to replace something perfectly serviceable with something newer/better/different. Electronics are one example of that -- my teenaged son, for instance, wants the newest iPod/game console/etc. as soon as it gets released, even though his old stuff is just fine.
My favorite thing? Something old, repurposed as something new. An old rusty watering can hung sideways from a tree as a bird nest... an old divided wooden box used to store candles upright... antique doorknobs made into coat hangers -- there's a million ways to repurpose cool old things!

My house is filled with antiques and randon flea market/thrift store finds. I LOVE old stuff.
BUT
I also love my new(er) laptop and ipod.
I like the mix of old and new energy... :)
Since I watch too much HGTV (all the home buying/fixing/decorating shows), I immediately thought of old in terms of vintage, antique, and retro styles. I also like old and new stuff, but I vastly prefer it to look comfortable and homey, like it's been around a while. If and when I'm ever able to decorate my older home (50's), I would like it to resemble an arts and crafts bungalow. I am certain, also, that things are now made to deteriorate. I know that when I replace the original grey patterned formica in the kitchen, I won't find another laminate that will last as long and look as good for 60 years.

I have been collecting antiques and collectables for years. Ok maybe too many. They just don't make things like they use to anymore.

It really depends on your definition of old.
Like others, I prefer new technology, especially computer games. Graphics have just gotten so much better, though there are still games like the first Neverwinter Nights that I'll always love better than any new game. Which wasn't that bad graphics-wise anyways, at least not compared to Baldur's Gate or compared to older games that had pixels the size of my head.
New music largely sucks (though there is some good new stuff coming out as well, just seems to be fewer and further between), and I prefer metal from the 80's and early 90's (and no I'm not talking about that abomination called glam metal, lol). Same goes for old school punk, and I'm also a big fan of classical music up to about the 1940's. Newer classical music post-WWII just isn't all that interesting, and these days often seems to revolve around who can be more "eclectic" than the next guy...which actually seems to be a mentality plaguing every genre these days. Newsflash, it ain't "progressive music" if everyone and their dog is doing the same damned thing.
Overall, I'm in love with medieval history and always have been, and with anything pre-1900 to a lesser degree, so, like I said, it depends on what you consider "old."
As far as ideas, philosophy etc. it's a combination of both old and new.

Both!
I have one of those VCRs that have both the DVD and VHS players on it and people look at me funny when I differentiate between the two (as in "Grab the Auntie Mame VHS tape to watch") but I still love those tapes (as witnessed by my housemate when I tried to sell more than a hundred of them at my yard sale). People that came obviously preferred new items because they left all of my VHS tapes and took every last one of the DVDs I had for sale.
My computer is 4 1/2 years old and a desktop; antiquated by today's standards. It functions so I keep it. I can't justify the cost of getting something else when it works just fine. I do like 'new to me' stuff but am just as happy with something I got at a thrift store as a regular retail store.
Frankly, I just enjoy shoppping, whether for new, new to me, or old stuff. I do love the new smell of things but prefer the old prices.

was reading through these posts....and i must say in most things i prefer old or at least well aged.. :glasses:
Wine is much better old....people are much better when they have a few extra years on them... relationships are better after the first 3 years of insanity have passed....aged cheese...potato salad always tastes better the next day....pizza the next morning much better,,,and why buy 1200 thread cotton sheets for 400 dollars when u can buy used 300 count for 5 dollars at goodwill and they feel just as soft?
I prefer shopping at the goodwill to shopping at the mall, nicer people and the shirts already have that nice soft comfy feel...why spend 200 dollars at abercrombies for a new pair of jeans that already look worn..when i can buy em at the goodwill for 5 dollars?
I love auctions...and have bought magnificent oriental rugs and turkish rugs with not s spot on them for 25 dollars,,so why buy them for 2400 or more; So I can say I bought them at Saks? or Paulsons? or have my neighbors ooh and ahhh when the delivery truck pulls up? No thanks I will take the 2300 i saved and furnish every room in a 10 room house with antiques and high quality used stuff......or use it to purchase that 1970 mgb that only has 41000 miles on it at the auction tomorrow :)
My daughter is moving into her own apartment...two weeks ago..i looked on craigslist and in one day, 120 miles of driving and 4 stops....we had a sofa, loveseat, chair, end tables, lamps, and all of it matched and looked and smelled brand new....and all of it was for free.......so we spent a day driving from location to location...loading the truck... and 20 dollars on gas....for her living room furniture (the sofa, loveseat and chair were at 3 different places) If the truck had been bigger we could have gotten her a free tv stand as well. But we bot that at the auction (solid mahogany 1940's liquor cabinet) for 7 dollars,,,so for 27 dollars she furnished her living room and can now afford that giant 55 inch flatscreen hdtv......so I can come over and watch the closer :D
