For me, that would depend greatly on what "stuff" we are discussing. For example, I love old cars... but on the flip I also love new electronics.

Old Stuff - Hands down

I love "Vintage" and "Antiques", I'm also a fan of repurposing things. Almost all my lighting is vintage, as well as accessories, furniture and fun things.

Things I want new would be mattresses and bedding for sure and electronics. My dishes are a mix of vintage and new, but I also tend to keep things for a long time. I don't care about cars too much, the one I have now is 8 years (6 with us) old and way paid off. When it dies, I will get another used car.

I try to stay away from thrift stores and tag sales now because I just don't need anything.

I really like old things that were designed to be serviced or fixed and last. If that kind of thinking had prevailed, we would have a lot less in landfills!

Some things old like plumbing and wiring I'd rather update.

I have to say after taking a look under the carpet in my little 1940's bungalow at the original wood flooring, the quality of the wood is amazing and very much worth refinishing!

there are some new green home design products that I like very much such as recycled glass counter tops and composting garbage disposals.

And I'm never giving up my Sunbeam perculator! Never!

Atlast brings up a good point.

Things used to be made to last. The first vacuum cleaner I had was an Electrolux from the 40's that my Grandma passed on to me when I got my first apartment back in...uh...1979. I used that well into my marriage until we could no longer get belts for it. It was noisy as hell, but did a rockin' job. I had the same coffee maker, a Sunbeam electric percolator that I got at a garage sale about that same time, if I had to guess, I would say it was from the 50's. I was sad when it gave up the ghost some 15 years later.

I have a blue Kitchen Aid mixer I got back in 89 and it works beautifully to this day, even though I would love to have one of the new black ones with a lifting bowl. I can't justify the expense. And also, the new ones don't last as long.

We've gone through 2 vacuums in two years and regardless of brand, Krups or Mr. Coffee's, the damn things don't last more than a couple of years.

I know this is on purpose. No one can convince me otherwise. "Planned Obsolesence" (I can't spell it, but I know what it is)

Depends on the stuff. But just in general I think old stuff more so than new stuff. I do like new electronics but I love the old games. I keep a new truck but love antique cars and muscle cars. I love a old knucklehead Harley, but prefer the dependability of the newer models, not to mention the suspension is also much smoother. So I think some of both is a good thing, old and new.

Cute topic

OMG...I HATE new electronics! I was horrified to learn they stopped making albums! Then, the VCR was replaced by the DVD and now by Blue something. And my daughter just told me they dont make tvs like the one I have...you know..the one with substance...no flat screen or flat back. It doesnt look like it was put thru the mangler. HA! Some of you dont even know what a mangler is!!!! Keep those damned new electronics away from me!

I can't fairly choose either option in the poll because I like both. I love vintage clothes, old muscle cars, historic homes, etc. But I also love my new big-ass flatscreen, my 3 new computers, and a ton of various other new electronics. I guess I'll just stand in the middle of the road on this one...

I had to vote for old stuff, I have a real thing for old (haunted) buildings, of which we have far too many on this side of the pond, but we also have some great flea markets, again in really old places, one's in a victorian train station, which is now a metro station, whic always has lots of old stuff for sale there.
But then again, without new stuff, would we be able to communicate in this way??

Default --not exactly *stuff* but had to do it this way--

I was undecided until I thought about in terms of memories vs. experiences.

I picked new experiences over old memories.

Both.
I love old movies and music but I also love finding a new artist.
I love antiques.
I love old linens.
I sometimes love vintage jewelry, but it depends on the history/source.

I love new electronics.
I love new clothes/shoes.
And I love a new bottle of perfume.

You spelled it right.

I hear you about stuff designed to be replaced... drives me nuts. Of course, there's also the "I want" consumerism syndrome -- people wanting to replace something perfectly serviceable with something newer/better/different. Electronics are one example of that -- my teenaged son, for instance, wants the newest iPod/game console/etc. as soon as it gets released, even though his old stuff is just fine.

My favorite thing? Something old, repurposed as something new. An old rusty watering can hung sideways from a tree as a bird nest... an old divided wooden box used to store candles upright... antique doorknobs made into coat hangers -- there's a million ways to repurpose cool old things!

Since I watch too much HGTV (all the home buying/fixing/decorating shows), I immediately thought of old in terms of vintage, antique, and retro styles. I also like old and new stuff, but I vastly prefer it to look comfortable and homey, like it's been around a while. If and when I'm ever able to decorate my older home (50's), I would like it to resemble an arts and crafts bungalow. I am certain, also, that things are now made to deteriorate. I know that when I replace the original grey patterned formica in the kitchen, I won't find another laminate that will last as long and look as good for 60 years.

I have been collecting antiques and collectables for years. Ok maybe too many. They just don't make things like they use to anymore.
