I reluctantly have to say i fell of the wagon.
The e-ciggs however do work for me and i can quit on them.
They don't however last very long (the charge). I am going to buy another one or another type with hopefully a longer battery charge on Friday.
Keep up the good work all. So proud of you!!!!!
It's ok princessbelle, you can jump back on anytime...the smoking wagon passes by frequently.
Something that worked for me was having a plastic inhalator thingy
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q8/scoobs63/images-3.jpg
because it didn't look remotely like a cig. I wanted to break the visual thang. I used the nicotine cartridges for a few weeks but by then I'd broken the hand-to-mouth habit and didn't need the inhalator. I was taking Champix/tix though so the inhalator was just about breaking the hand-to-mouth action.

Ok, so I am working on 15 weeks, and I live with a smoker. Every time she smokes, I get heartburn? What is that?
I kinda want to address something else that is part of this process, and that is the hand to mouth issue, or in other words, gaining weight.
When I quit, I was probably 230lbs, and then I gained 10lbs. I feel like I am having to retrain every aspect of my life. The quitting part seems like it is the easiest part. Changing my eating and exercise habits is really kicking my ass. So, today, I played a dance workout game for about an hour with my son. Hopefully, I will get up and do it again tomorrow. I think I am looking for something else to do with my hands beside smoke or eat. :s
Thanks for listening.

Well Lilith; The best thing that helps me is when I am riding my bike, I don't crave something bad to do with my hands like eat more or smoke. I've also noticed that some folks who use to smoke and quit, also developed some serious health issues. My business partner developed a severe allergic reaction to smoke that she said closes her throat. I do not know if this is true.

The ten pounds is kicking my ass too however be prepared for additional weight when you start working out its muscle that's in essence where my ten pounds have come from...although my body is taking a different shape lol im still irritated with the weight gain...
don't starve yourself if you need to eat however aren't hungry eat fruit..or snack on sunflower seeds or what have you make sure you stay healthy is all.
I work out every morning....it helps a lot.
The heartburn thing ive noticed that as well i think it is because nicotine is entering your body through second hand smoke...even though you quit your still getting it. Get some rolaids...
i hope the above helps
I had a nightmare last night dreamt i smoked and that i had a pack of cigarettes in my hand, when i realized in my dream what i was doing and what i was holding i sat down plum where i was at and screamed at myself these words...
"dammit heather, now you have to start all over what were you thinking, it was hard enough to get here to 2 months" <~~~~My subconscious perhaps?
It was really weird even weirder is i didn't remember it until i was working out this morning....and then i realized im ok...i don't have to be afraid of success...i think i have been afraid of succeeding.....
So while at work today this fella i occasionally talk with i mentioned to him i quit smoking and he asked me some questions and one of my responses was its a choice that i make every day to not smoke...I think for now for me this is a choice i have to make every day and that the dream was just a fool trick and that as long as i make this choice for me, im good...
The only thing to fear is fear itself...

It's so late here and it's my hometown Pride in a few hours, so I will come back to you all in a day or so. Keep the faith and don't give up giving up.
The weight. Oh my Lord that's my bugbear. I've put on a quarter of my original bodyweight and it irks me soooooo bad. I purposely didn't substitute cigs for food.

I should tell y'all...before I try and switch off.
I have a chest infection right now. I feel pretty bad. This time last year I would have been totally incapacitated, unable to move more than a couple of steps without gasping for breath. Not to put too finer point on it...I'm coughing up but I shall ride my bike to Pride tomorrow.
Result!

Good morning and Happy Smoke-Free days to all!
I have been very busy and happy to report today is 12 days smoke free. I called my kid and asked her to remove all smoke paraphernalia from the back porch so when I arrive home it won't be staring at me.
Incubus, sorry to hear of that chest infection! Please take care as much and possible. Have a happy Pride!
Good morning gaea, lilith, Dapper Butch, popcorninthesofa and all those trying to kick the habit!
Have a great smoke free weekend.

Good evening and Happy Smoke Free Sunday.
I have arrived home on the eve of my 2 weeks being a quitter! I was a bit shocked at how immediate the urge to have a smoke was when I walked through my front door. Well, my kid made sure everything was gone, I am very grateful for that! She also put a bag of sour gumballs on my pillow:) I love my kid!

Ooooh I so wanted to smoke yesterday and today. Essay writing triggers cravings. Does it every time. I'm sure by the time Thursday evening comes round and I've handed in the cravings will stop.
I won't cave in, I just thought I'd share that even a year or so away from my last ciggie there is still the occasional craving. They're pretty easy to deal with nowadays though. Jeepers! Never thought that phrase would ever come outta my mouth. :cheesy:

temptation all around all the time...its a choice i'm making every day, yesterday ,today etc...through the tears the heartaches and what not's...
I went to the driving range with a smoker friend yesterday...hm no i did not cave...no i did not smoke....i did however roll one around between my fingers to see how it felt...and well it was odd the feeling in all honesty...tried to get a hold of what i used to feel...and i couldn't...i could have taken the next step and lit it however i didn't want to and i didnt want to throw away my 9 weeks 2 days lol
i like what you say doc...
I dont conform easily to societal rules and such on how to live same went for the patch...i used a 21 mg the whole time....when i want to cut down i cut the 21 mg in half then quarters then in 8ths....im officially off the patch...no wonder im a wreck...

I hope you enjoy golf. To me it is a nice relaxing, albeit at times cause of much angst, great time. The plus is that I was only one of 3 smokers in the league, so I will request a non smoking group for this Monday. After that, I am sure I will be fine:)

I really am not changing anything. We are a group of 24 and groups are different every week so everyone gets to be with everyone at some point during the season. I know me and I have a very addictive and routine driven personality....It isn't the nicotine that drives my cravings to smoke. I am very visual. I see it, especially when doing something that I always do...Retraining me isn't the easiest thing for me to accomplish.... Very "who moved my cheese?!" thing
Probably why I am single;):sunglass:

nah I'm kidding and I hope you laughed at that because person to person I might said an alternate word to darn.
I get being routine oriented as most onus are...here's the trick include "not smoking " into your routines.
I too am visual with the whole smoking thing I might follow a smoker with my eyes however I've noticed the last several weeks I don't do that anymore.

Y'all are doing brilliantly!
Go you gaea getting past using the patches.
I've had visual cues all weekend as I've spent time with two smokers. One of them is a heavy smoker and I've been breathing in her second-hand smoke whilst I've been teaching her things on the computer which has been quite unpleasant. Just that breathing in what has become vile tasting smoke has made it really easy to put any thoughts of smoking out of my head.
Don't give up giving up!

Good morning Incubus. If I remember correctly. don't you have COPD? I have a very good friend that has this and as a curosity we never smoke around her and if we even have sniffles of a cold, we do not go visit, it could be deadly to her. Small price for us to pay for our friend.
If it were me and I had that, I would certainly ask people to not smoke around me. I never have people smoke inside my home, even when I was smoking. I believe that they could abstain for the short time they are visiting or they could out to the back porch as I had always done.
Of course out in public, it is your choice whether or not to go into a place where there is smoking. Here there are more and more smoking bans so it is pretty easy to dine and do most things without having to deal with the smoking folks.
Please put you and your health first:)

Hey! I just realized I have completed 3 weeks and am being beginning my 4th week of being a non smoker!
Have a grand smoke free week everyone:)
Don't give up giving up!
i deal with visuals most days and mostly they dont bother me in fact ive started to look at what is odd about smoking, perhaps this way of thinking will help me on my journey....
being around it can trigger instant heart burn for me or not i think it depends on the brand...most brands i can handle they smell different as well...
when it comes to the brand i chose the scent is distinct and almost tempting and no heartburn occurs its really strange.
10 full weeks behind me as of today beginning my 11th....wow...go me...too

10 complete weeks! That is grand, gaea. If you don't mind, tell me how many times had you tried to quit, if any, and the longest period you made it previously.
I cannot count how many times over the past 40 years. I had quit for 9 years about 30 years ago. Boy, now there is a regret!

I do indeed have copd OSButch. To be fair, I think it is the first time I've ever sat so close to a heavy smoker in the whole time I've not been smoking, so it's not usually something I have to deal with.
It just doesn't feel right to ask smokers not to smoke around me, not if I want to visit them in their own houses where they usually smoke inside. I'm going to be telling them about how fabulous it is not to smoke and how much better I feel because I gave up and that I am the example of what happens if you don't give up anyway.
My friends were shocked at how debilitated I have become due to copd so I know I've made them consider their own smoking habits.

Whoa! You've come so far gaea. :rrose:
I'm glad I can't smell. It means it's one less trigger. The visuals are an odd one. They don't get me all the time, just sometimes.
D'yanno, I see folks smoking around town nowadays and it almost always makes me think, 'jeez I'm glad I don't smoke now'.
I've had the bestest excuse to smoke. I've had one of the worst bits of news I could possibly get. My housemate (and ex) is selling the house we've lived in for 13yrs. If that's not a good excuse I don't know what is but I'm diggin' in m'Harley boot heels and I'm not going to give her that power over me.

You're getting the right bits of you fixed gaea...bad throats are smoking related surely? Get it all done. I've had two chest full-on chest infections since I stopped instead of the usuall 5!! Get yer throat sorted out and maybe you can stop them huh?
It was fantastic to prove to my ex-lover that all my tooth infections over the last few years since I've known her have been smoking related. I know she's going to try give up........again! I shall support her every step if necessary.

Good morning gaea and Incubus!
Gaea, I hope you get that strep taken care of even if it means surgery! At 53, I still have my tonsils and I guess I am pretty lucky to never had strep! Maybe I did when I was really young and just don't remember!

Hey there OSB
Almost a month, how damn cool is that. You've done one month you can do another. And so it carries on. You're doing brilliantly. Do you feel a different, "this time I'm going to succeed" mind-set?
I started a thread thread like this on a UK based BF site when I was giving up and like you found it a 'comfort' to post my progress most days. I was the only one giving up at the time but still received support from those that had already done it. I found that in writing the posts I was supporting myself. If no-one else had said anything I would still have continued posting and giving up. I guess it was more a blog than an interactive thread but it worked for me.
As you can see I still find visiting the giving up smoking thread somewhat comforting. Infact it's supporting other folks that I gain comfort from now. I am the lesson of what happens if you don't give up and if I can help another from learning that lesson the hardest way then I'm happy. :cheesy:
Keep the faith and don't give up giving up.

Hey there Daywalker, can I ask what made you go back to tobacco after 8yrs?
Wishing you luck on the healthy preparations for giving up. Is it junk food that is your downfall or is it just substituting one oral fixation for another (any sort of food?). I tried really hard not to substitute cigs/joints for food. I still gained weight because my metabolism wasn't artificially speeded up by nicotine - not to mention hitting man-o-pause and becoming a sedentary student all at the same time . 25 whole pounds all round my middle sucks but at least my poorly-sick lungs aren't being tortured by all the toxins in tobacco. Btw. I did check with my copd nurse that I could still smoke 'erb as long as it was sans tobacco and he said "...yes, as long as it's through one of those 'water bung' things" *insert bong tokin' smiley*

Well I was going thru a break-up and wanted to self destruct for
a couple weeks, lol...what that turned into was a few social outings
where just one smoke with a cocktail here n there was do-able.
:wine:
I now had my house to myself and would have 'just one smoke' before
getting on the bike and heading across the bridge to work. That turned
into 'just one here' and 'just one there'...but it kept me from delving in
to the icky world of drugs which can be easy in the Bay Area.
:shark:
So in a way it saved me, but then it stayed...to kill me. LOL.
:cigar2:
I know from past experience that eating was a quick replacement for
the occupying of the hands and jaws, and what with my love of all things
resembling Ding Dongs, etc. we have decided that if we were going to have
a chance at not replacing one evil for another then setting one pattern at
a time would be best. Therefore we have embarked on the eating healthier
project first. Once we are confident it has become second nature to grab
fruit instead of pastries...lol, then we can consider ourselves
ready for Phase 2 ~ Operation Kick da Butts.
:police:
I had quit for short periods of time since...once for over a year, etc.
Somehow it was easier when I was 25 to go cold turkey.
Over 20 years later it seems more a precarious
journey thru smoking hoops of evil.
:|
And yes, the 'erb smoking is healthier thru a water bong, I am more apt
to roll mine in Job Crystal papers. They're see thru...it's paper before it
goes thru the chemical process to become white.
Burns clean and smooth and slow.
:weedsmoke:
Hope that answered yer query and to all who have begun their journey
already...just remember there is no map, this journey is
driven by your mind not your feet!

Thank-you for your reply Daywalker. I hope you get into quit-mode again. Modifying your eating behaviour is a really good preparation. I'm almost afraid to ask what a Ding Dong is but I'll ask anyway...what is it? The things I like to snack on aren't healthy options either so along with that slowed down nicotine free metabolism, that probably accounts for my extra 25lbs. I need to start a healthier food regimen too and cycle more miles.
I can understand the 'self destruct' thang. I'm at the start of one of those times myself. I just lost my (very prt time) job and then my home of the last 13yrs all within the space of a couple of weeks :worried: the house move isn't quite imminent but it's going to happen sooner or later. I just wanna bury my head in the self-destruct-sand :canoworms: ...I won't smoke tobacco though, that lung-destruction is already done.

I am really glad you have made it, gives me hope that I can too. Tomorrow is my 6 week mark. Doing those things that I normally smoke while doing is still hard. It is getting a little.
Keep it up gaea, to all those thinking about it and those that have succeeded for years! I love reading the successes!

Just wanted to offer up my support for all of you trying to quit!:moonstars:
I quit smoking 3 years ago and it was the single best thing I have ever done for my health. I no longer wheeze or cough all the time and I definitely sleep better. (Plus, I've saved a WHOOOOOLE lot of money!)
You can DO IT!

I do real well in the morning i don't even think about smoking...
i would say 98% of my day is spent without thinking of smoking the other 2 % well that is a given i think.....
when i do think about it my thoughts are generally ...."you have come to far to wipe out the work you have done" or "dumbass, why do you wanna smoke?" and sometimes i think "your doing well" and i just smile to myself cause no one around to see that smile or what it is about.

Good morning gaea. I do the same thing. Most of the time I don't even thing about smoking, what a relief! When I firsted decided to quit, I could do nothing else but think about how much I missed smoking. I am not at the 2% thinking yet, lol!
This morning is a bit hard, smoking seems to be all I am thinking about and It is driving me nuts! I have to go to a funeral and that stresses me. Smoking is what I did when I was in a major stress situation. This is a biggie. I can make it through this!

my sweetie quit smoking 4 weeks ago today, at 9 pm....
I was once a smoker...I get the whole smoking thing and the whole quitting thing....
I am (still) amazed at how he did it...never complaining, or being mean or scary or anything other than a moment here and there of being tired and a little spacey...
I am so proud of him and all he does...this one is way at the top of the list...
what a wonderful way to care for yourself and those who care about you...
I admire you all for finding the will to get out from under...
be well and strong...
cheers

Wow, I would say that it took me AT LEAST a year (probably more) to get to this point. In fact, I would say that I am still at 5-10% and it has been close to two years now. Of course, I smoked 1.75 packs per day for 20 years, too.

Chantix (varenicline): Label Change - Risk of Certain Cardiovascular Adverse Events
[UPDATED 07/22/2011] FDA has approved an updated drug label for Chantix (varenicline) to include information about the efficacy and safety of the drug in two patient populations who may benefit greatly from giving up smoking—those with cardiovascular disease and those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The updated label now also includes alternative directions for patients to select a quit smoking date.
[Posted 06/16/2011]
AUDIENCE: Family Medicine, Cardiology
ISSUE: FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that the Prescribing Information for this drug product will be strengthened to inform the public that use of varenicline may be associated with a small, increased risk of certain cardiovascular adverse events in patients who have cardiovascular disease. This safety information will be added to the Warnings and Precautions section and the patient Medication Guide.
BACKGROUND: FDA reviewed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 700 smokers with cardiovascular disease who were treated with Chantix or placebo. While cardiovascular adverse events were infrequent overall, certain events, including heart attack, were reported more frequently in patients treated with Chantix than in patients treated with placebo. The events included angina pectoris, nonfatal myocardial infarction, need for coronary revascularization, and new diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease or admission for a procedure for the treatment of peripheral vascular disease. FDA is continuing to evaluate the cardiovascular safety of Chantix and is requiring the manufacturer to conduct a large, combined analysis (meta-analysis) of randomized, placebo-controlled trials. FDA will update the public when additional information is available.
RECOMMENDATION: See the Data Summary section of the Drug Safety Communication for additional information.
Healthcare professionals should be aware that smoking is an independent and major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and smoking cessation is of particular importance in this patient population. The known benefits of Chantix should be weighed against its potential risks when deciding to use the drug in smokers with cardiovascular disease.
Patients are encouraged to read the Medication Guide they receive along with their Chantix prescription.
Healthcare professionals and patients are encouraged to report adverse events, side effects, or product quality problems related to the use of these products to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program:

i stopped smoking over ten years ago after having smoked for over twenty something years. i know how freaking hard it is to do. i applaud everyone of you here trying to stop! it's the best thing you'll ever do and you can't even begin to know how good you will feel afterwards. i used the patch and worked that system exactly as directed and i also used a lot of online support groups. [like this!] for me, having somewhere to go to so i could whine, bitch or brag about my quit days, was extremely helpful. oh, and that quit meter was very cool to use. i think this is it: http://www.dedicateddesigns.com/qk/download.htm at first you don't see a lot of change and it's a wee bit discouraging but all of a sudden one day you look at it and you are amazed at how well you're doing and how far you've come and then well, it's too late to turn back :) yay all of you!!!

Oh sweetie, it's better to battle a few pounds than fight for breath.
Your ass has grown a bit huh? I could certainly utilize that.............. as target practice :bullwhip: Ooops we're in the smoking thread not the bdsm threads :grindevil: :groucho:
Just 5lbs on your belly you reckon. You lucky, lucky girl. Try a 25lb weight gain. I started gaining weight about 6months in and then put on a pound a week for about 6months. I purposely didn't replace food for my cigs though. I'm not sure of the science of it but nicotine speeds up our metabolism a bit I think, which means when we stop ingesting nicotine, even if we don't substitute our oral fix with food, then it's going to be harder to maintain our 'smoking weight'....especially as we get older and possibly succumb to any sort of middle-age weight gain
I think weight gain is often an excuse - not a reason - that folks use to start smoking again.
I hate being the weight I am now. I've not been 125lbs since I was a chubby teenager who turned to anorexia and bulimia for the next 20yrs to stay thin. However, I refuse to go back to those dark days. I'm on the run down to 50 and if I can't be the skinny chap anymore then I'll live with being bigger but with lungs that might work through my 50s...Lungs come first!
Your Doc says you can expect to lose 10lbs after your tonsillectomy...Jeepers you lucky lady. I've had my tonsils out, adenoids and appendix. I wonder what other bits they could cut out to help lose some weight. I wonder if a lobotomy would help!! :fishswim:

i bought a metabolic support to help with the metabolism thing, im aware of smoking speeding up the metabolism however i had lost and was able to keep off 100 lbs over the last 5 years so i guess not only do i have to dig in my :blueheels: to maintain my quit however i also have to do something different so i stop gaining weight...

Dear gaea
Ahaaa I see why you're so bothered about the weight gain. 100lbs lost!! Jeepers that sure puts my measly 25lbs into perspective.
What is a metabolic support?
I know you're an active person usually but due to being poorly has your activity level decreased significantly? That surely would be a contributing factor to the gain.
As you know I cycle lots of miles to ensure I can continue to eat foods I like rather than diet.
Do you think you could live with being a little heavier? I'm afraid that's the point I'm at....like it or lump it (as my Ma used to say).
yours diggingly
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q8/scoobs63/Dory20Picture20-1.jpg
Dear Diggingly,
yes of course i remain active with the exception of the last month...due to the fact i haven't been feeling well.
A metabolic support is a vitamin that assists with increasing the metabolism via supporting the thyroid found at a vitamin shoppe.
Im hoping after my surgery i will feel well enough to start working out again..i think i will because i seem to be getting my energy back slowly.
I lost damn near an entire you lol....it is my battle i know.
Yours,

Yanno, I told her when I quit, but since she really never saw me smoke often, I don't think she realizes I really did quit. I never smoke inside our home or in the car, she was very allergic to the smoke, so I always smoked outside.
It was one of the things that really bothered me about my kids' bio mom. When she would have visitation, she would smoke with my kid in the car....But I had the windows down, she would say....grrrrr.

It's hard for me to come back in here to keep up with what is going on with everyone because talking about smoking is one of the things that make me want to do it, so I avoid the topic at all cost.
As of today, I have had a half a drag (when I was extremely intoxicated, mind you), and that is it since March 28th. So, I still consider myself smoke free for 4 months.
I am doing a debate in my Comp class and I am pro smoking bans in public places. While doing the research for this debate I learned so much about smoke and smoking that I did not know....and especially about second hand smoke. I can honestly say that I will never smoke again!
Stay strong all of you that are quitting or quit. You are doing the best thing for not only YOUR health, but also for the health of others around you.

Just for a laugh at smokers and the things they do. I recieved this from a friend and thought I would share it here. I am glad that I will not be doing this when I am 80!
Not allowed to smoke inside, Jane and Arlene are outside their nursing home, having a drink and a smoke, when it starts to rain. Jane pulls out a condom, cuts off the end, puts it over her cigarette, and continues smoking.
Arlene: What in the hell is that?
Jane: A condom. This way my cigarette doesn't get wet.
Arlene: Where did you get it?
Jane: You can get them at any pharmacy.
The next day, Arlene hobbles herself into the local pharmacy and announces to the pharmacist that she wants a box of condoms.
The pharmacist, obviously embarrassed, looks at her kind of strangely (she is after all, over 80 years of age), but very delicately asks what brand of condom she prefers.
'Doesn't matter Sonny, as long as it fits on a Camel.'
The pharmacist fainted.

I don't smoke much. Mostly at work. Typically at most, 5 cigarettes a day. I rarely smoke at home due to MBE's asthma.
The nicotine part is no problem for me to kick. For whatever reason, I never was hooked on that. The hand-mouth thing may prove to be a bit harder.
Ideas?

OK...it has been five months and five days since my last smoke. I have someone I love dearly just being handed his ass right now, and I found myself looking at my nightstand, looking for my cigarettes. As I looked, I found my stomach dropping out and realizing that I don't smoke anymore, and that thought was kind of frustrating. *Deep breath* Moving on, now.

This is the first time I have ever tried to quit smoking in 28 yrs. I have never been a heavy smoker maybe 1 or 4 a day occasionally a
whole pack, some days I wouldn't have any at all . Actually I have never enjoyed smoking at all . Its truly a compulsive behavior. I'm so happy now.:eyebat:
I didn't think I would get any withdrawal symptoms , but boy did I ever.
I just thought I was getting to old for this nonsence.:hospital-snoopy:

A big nicotine free welcome for the new contributors to the giving up smoking thread.
Ok, I know know I am not normal! I went to the Doctor today for nothing major. They always weigh you.....I have actually lost 6 pounds since the last time I was there 3 months ago. I can't believe it, I have felt like I have gained 10 pounds easy, especially with all the soda pop I have been drinking recently. Go figure!
You lucky, lucky bugger. I wish I could have lost weight. Although I didn't start gaining until 6 months in. Long may the lack of weigh gain reign!
Ideas?
One of those plastic inhalator thingies might help. It's what helped break the hand to mouth habit for me. In the end I didn't even need the nicotine cartridge, just the plastic bit. It took weeks rather than months to break the habit. I liked that it didn't look like a ciggie so was helping break visual cues too.

Go you Starbuck. One addiction at a time huh. Get yourself a bong or nice pipe for smoking weed without tobacco for the time being.
I'm glad the patches work for you. You'll still need plenty of willpower though.
Just remember there are no reasons to start smoking again, just excuses.
Holler if you need support.
When I gave up I found it helpful to post about it pretty much daily (on another website), it was useful to write about it and what worked for me, what didn't and how I felt.

Hey OS Butch, don't feel so bad, I had a mini (if you can call it that) relapse today myself. I smoked half a cigar over two different periods of time. I swear the hardest time is right after a meal! mmhmm the rituals to me were much worse than the actual physical addiction.
Gillian and I quit about 7 years ago now and I still have times where I think "I'll just smoke one" but yeah - no I can't do that.
What even makes it worse (or maybe it's a good thing?) is that I have dreams where I'm smoking and I wake up so pissed that I started again and have to quit all over...
maybe that's my brains way of saying "you really don't wanna go there.. see how much it'll piss you off?" lol

Chantix isn't a psychotropic medication.

Chantix isn't a psychotropic medication.
I have had several patients that did have to stop Chantix due to worsening mental health issues. The Chantix.com website includes this safety information on how it can affect anyone that already may underlying depression, anxiety, etc.
That said, I did have patients with no mental health issues be able to stop smoking while on Chantix. One smoked for 40-years.
Your doctor is always the best person to help figure out what is most appropriate-working with you-that is. I have also had a few that had success with a good hypnotist.
My mom quit after smoking for over 50 years and has not touched one in almost 10 years now.
Smoking is one of the most difficult of all to stop but not impossible.
Hugs to you all on your journey.

I smoked for over 20 years. My decision to quit was after a visit to my doctor and walking out with a blood pressure level of 150/90. I had to make some changes to my life. I was a prime candidate for a heart attack...soon! I was already experiencing light-headedness, fatigue and overall just feeling sluggish. I am lucky, let me reiterate, VERY lucky to have an amazing, supportive doctor who worked with me on a weekly basis for 6 months to get me on an exercise routine, good blood pressure meds and help me put the cigarettes down. It's been 15 months since my last cigarette. I am off of the blood pressure meds and I go to the gym on a regular basis.
I used Chantix. I did have side effects but it was all about it be tough on my stomache. For me it was just getting me on the right dose and keeping me there despite the path recommended by the makers of Chantix. I didn't experience any pyschological issues. It basically cut the craving for cigarettes. I just quit craving them after some time and it was easy to not pick them back up. As stated though, this is something you and your doctor need to talk about. There are other methods that may work just as well.
For me, I think I probably could have put the smokes down without the Chantix just because I had gotten to such a terrifying place physically. Terrifying places provide excellent motivation for making changes.
I know how difficult this process can be. Cigarettes were my best friend and always there in moments of crisis and stress to calm me down so that I could keep going. I also now know how rewarding it can be as well. I go to bed and I can breathe, I wake up and I can breathe. I don't have panic moments anymore or nicotine fits. Nicotine doesn't drive my schedule anymore. No more sneaking out of long meetings, family functions etc...My energy levels are back to normal. Things smell and taste differently. My teeth are back to being white. I don't have to hide my smokers breath under gum and mints. I have stamina. These are just a few of the benefits. There are many more.
For some of you, like me, it make take something extreme to get you going. For others, I hope you take this story and do something before bad things begin to happen. In any case, I wish you ALL the best in your attempts. I quit 5 times and finally made it happen. Roll with relapses, they happen but don't give up and be too hard on yourself. One day without a smoke is better than none!!!!
Cheers,
Scoobs

Well done for resisting mate. Sometimes the pull is strong isn't it. Thankfully we can get over those humps and feel stronger for doing so.
Champix/tix can indeed affect some people adversely. I have heard of one or two but mainly I know of success stories. I knew there was a risk for me as a person with a history of depression but went ahead anyway. The main side effect for me was vivid dreams and that was a small price to pay for the benefits I got.

My understanding is that one does not have to have a history of depression or anxiety per se in order to have these side effects. I believe this is on their web site.
With that said, a side effect of quitting smoking is depression and anxiety, in and of itself (for physiological reasons, not psychological). That is the whole purpose of using Wellbutrin/Zyban. It has nothing to do with decreasing cravings, it is just to manage the subsequent depression/anxiety/irritability that people experience when quitting smoking.
Chantix helps with cravings, that is why it is so successful in the way that Zyban has not been.
In response to Scoobs- my side effect was stomach stuff, also. I had nausea every morning after taking it. Really felt like I was going to vomit. It last about 20 minutes and was worth it to me.

Dear fellow smoking thread readers,
I have fallen off the proverbial smoking wagon. It started about a week and a half ago when I went to a club and I said I'd allow myself just two cigarettes. Man did I lie to myself! I ended up smoking 3/4 of that pack and I've been smoking up a storm ever since.
But tonight I bought a new kind of cigarette that will hopefully help kick the habit. They are 100% additive free and they actually have more tobacco in them when compared to regular cigarettes. I'm thinking, fewer chemicals for me to be addicted to, easier to quit the tobacco. Wish me luck.

Yes, what Jo says is correct, Starbuck, they will not assist you in quitting (those were my smokes of choice, too).
I would suggest you getting back on the wagon NOW...the longer you are off, the harder it will be to get back on. It doesn't really make sense to let yourself get back to full time smoking BEFORE quitting. Does it?

I understand about depression and anxiety and what are you saying , I am a nurse clinician . I never done any research on Chantix . However, while I was working in ER, I had patients they came in they were frantic thinking they are having a heart attack at age 20-30 which is possible , but majority times it was a panic attack and just to find out they were on Chantix .
Many people refused to take Zyban due to the weight gain . My son was taking Chantix and he was still smoking . I was horrified and he is still smoking so do I . I feel as a biggest hypocrite when I am educating my patients not to smoke and then I go on my smoke break . I never done any illegal drugs and no I am not pill popper or alcoholic . Yet , my smoking addiction it's a biggest challenge for me . In ER while coding patient and loose him all of us went outside to smoke cigarette since was so stressful and emotional .
I was just curious if anybody done some research on Chantix , but now I will do it myself since I have an access to medical sites through my employer .
thanks for reply

I saw my Psychiatrist today and he declined to give me Chantix and switch me from my current anti-depressant and put me on Wellbutrin to work along with the Chantix. His reasoning? He said it would cause way too much depression in me to switch (it took a long time to find a med for my depression that worked) and he said the Chantix would re-escalate my urges to cut myself again and I do NOT need that crap going on again. I'll just deal with smoking my own way.
been a month without smoking... first week was awful... now i wont even pick up a cigarette.

I quit smoking in 2002 just before I had a heart attack...the heart attack happened despite me quitting, I waited too long to stop; that and the diabetes, heart disease and extra 100 lbs was more than my ticker could take.
Despite that I still want a cigarette every.single. day.
Hang in there everyone, it really does get easier.:rrose:

Well my Mom was just diagnosed with non small cell lung cancer that has metastasized to the liver. She will be gone very soon. she smoked for 40 years and has COPD. And guess what I want to do? Smoke a cigarette to stuff all these feelings. I can't do this any more. I don't want my child to lose me so soon. I do not want to post this but I have to make myself accountable.

Good evening quitters, those attempting to quit and those thinking about quitting:)
I did so well for almost 4 months...I started again....and stopped several times since and still go back...
Well, here I am again. I decided today is it. I finished my last cigarette this evening, so tomorrow morning is the start of my new smoke free life!
I will lend my support to anyone going through this, I believe it is the hardest thing, I know it helped me. This thread helped too....I should have kept using it!
Happy Smoke free days!

My mom died from smoking related (copd) issues as well as diabetes and heart disease last year. She finally quit smoking after the 8th or 9th hospitalization in which I had to watch her struggle for every breath and get worse and worse until her kidneys failed. My God I miss her, and I am still pissed as Hell at her for not quitting when it would have meant her living past 70. My sister only quit smoking 2 months ago...but quit she did.
I have nothing magically to say to you that will help you quit, but you had the best reason of all...do it for your child. (f)
I wish you and your family peace and strength during this very sad time.

Quit date will be December 26, when I leave work. Since I don't smoke at work, that will give me a 12 hour jump on it. Already have a hike scheduled that day also, and no longer hike and smoke. Will be using nicotine lozenges this time!
Unable to take Welbutrin, or Chantix, nicotine patches remove layers of skin, and dislike chewing gum, so hoping this will work.
Never smoke in the house, I've been stuck at 1pack/day for a while, and need to do something to help with the habitual/ritual smokes. With it being winter, that might help.
I need to be smoke free before March! Ok, I need to be smoke free as soon as possible, so any help/encouragement is appreciated, and welcome!

Trying to keep it under 10 smokes a day is difficult!!!!!
Maybe should just start the process early, and make the QUIT my Christmas present to myself this year...it's only a few days away.
Yuck, I hate being irritable

If you went from a pack to under 10 a day, then yes, it would be difficult, as you are going through withdrawal. It does sound like a good plan, though. It makes sense to me that when you quit on the 26th your withdrawal won't be as bad if you didn't start cutting back early.
Hang in there!

Got out the nicotine lozenges today, so far so good! I haven't had a cigarette today, and only want one when I let the dogs out. Going to try this for the weekend, if I end up smoking over the weekend, can still quit on Monday morning without kicking myself for failing.
Last smoke was at 11pm yesterday, almost 24 hours....:twitch:

None since 1/8/12.
I downloaded a word search thingy on my android.
It makes time pass whilst on breaks at work so I'm not tempted.
I'm weird though. I've found that if I start craving, if I keep my mouth closed and inhale a slow deep breath through my teeth then exhale slowly, it mimics the activity of smoking and I'm okay again.

'Grats to all who've taken the plunge or are almost there. Read back in the thread, there are loads of handy hints, tips and personal stories to help you keep on track.
Try not to replace cigs with food, you'll regret it big time. Try to break the visual cues too. I found one of the plastic inhalator thingies a good way for me to break not only the hand to mouth action but the visual cues as it didn't look remotely like a cig. I used toothpicks and straws too.
Lady P, you've got it down thus far, have you considered using a NRT? Maybe patches? I took Chantix which really worked for me - along with the will power that has to be present too. A hundred patches stuck all over ya won't work unless you want them to. :cheesy:

I am actually going to try a difrent patch but they don't come for a bit..like a week. I may not need them by then..lol
I can't use alot of them nor the chantrix due to allergies and health conflicts.
But I believe the one I sent for will be good. Crossin my fingers atleast..smiles
I also had an idea like just now...I will try to put what I learn't when quitting drugs into play..Don't know if it is the same but sure feels like it.
The word HALT puts you in check..HUNGRY, ANGRY, LONELY AND TIRED.
WHEN FEELING UNSETTLED YOU NEED TO ADDRESS ALL THESE ARE OK AND IN CHECK.
Hoping this will work too..smiles
Thanks again. wish me luck..day 5 at slowing down drastically.

Hi all,
I have never been a tobacco smoker but have loved many who smoked. My sister smoked for 35 year, quit about 8 times and finally broke the habit after the second time she tried it with these herbs.
For those who don't know, tobacco is a stimulant and a depressant of the autonomic nervous system. It will increase you the fight/flight and relax with dopamine the pleasure part of your nervous system. So when you stop smoking, these neuronal receptors in the brain freak out (low dopamine) and you'll twitch like a tweaker yet you'll have less energy (less of a fight/flight response).
Nicotine is actually a neurotoxin in high doses. It's used industrially as an insecticide. When one smokes for many years, these nervous systems get used to not working as well and get too used to external pressure. These herbs are to help one get over that initial 2 to 4 week period when one quits.
Keep your smoking break habits up. Put the tincture is a bit of hot water and drink it like tea. Take the 5 minutes to stop, wool-gather, reflect, chit-chat or whatever you usually do while smoking. Just don't do it with another smoker until you get off the addiction and can be around smokers without wanting a cigarette.
Basic herbs for cessation
-mullien 15 drops, 3x a day
-licorice 5 drops, 1x a day
-Siberian ginseng, 12 drops, 1x a day
take before or at the usual time you have your first cigarette. The ginseng is a stimulant and will give you a little kick. You might want to take it a few times thru out the day when first quitting.
Liver detox (almost everyone should do this every year)
-burdock 12 drops 1x day
-milk thistle 12 drops 1x a day
Muscle relaxer (for the shakes and jitters)
-passion flower 12 drops 3x a day
Sugar cravings (they put sugar on the tobacco leaf which leads some to have sugar cravings when they quit tobacco)
-panax or American ginseng 10 cc vial a day (you can break up the timing to 2x or 3 x a day if that feels better)
Emotional cravings
-skullcap 3 to 5 drops a day (some find this a powerful herb. Listen to how your body responds to it)
Emotional/adrenal (energy) fatigue
-fresh oat head 5 to 10 drops 5x a day
Nicotine cravings
-lobelia 3 drops a day
Herbs are bitter and taste nasty, if an herb tastes good to you you probably should take it regularly if not monthly.
No one likes this cold infusion tea. Let me know if you like it
Fresh comprey and marshmellow root
-place a handful of herbs in a quart jar, cover with cold, fresh water and let sit over night. Strain and drink slowly through out the next day.

And it is also a bit costly.
But I will definately pass it along to a couple people who are using that form for sure.

I am actually going to try a difrent patch but they don't come for a bit..like a week. I may not need them by then..lol
Be careful with the patches. If you are already down to only 5-6 cigs a day, seems as though you would actually be increasing how much nicotine you are getting by using the patches (most patches give people one pack of cigs per day).
Good luck to you. Believe you can do it, and you will!

Ok so officially on my 6th day of cutting way down...Still doing like 6 smokes a day..except last night I stayed up and had 7 for the day..I just might be getting a little better handle on it for now. Atleast untill the next time I have to breathe deep or a stresser comes my way..Either way...I will stay on this no matter what, EVEN IF I FEEL IT WILL KILL ME...Ha!
I have found in RT, people don't see cutting down as a good thing. Really kinda sucks. But I see it as a great success.

Here is how I am doing it. My daughter is as well to and so far its working.
In the morning, wait to smoke your first one 1/2 hour later than normal..then time them every hour..smoke a half smoke every hour.
it also helps to change your style of smoking..I chose to role a smoke.
one rolled one equals half a full one btw so you can smoke the entire smoke..they are small.
Don't kick your butt if you mess up..just get back up and keep going.
Also..use supports like here.
they also have smoking coaches if you need them..free
1 888 the truth ..if that is wrong ask and i will get number.
they help and also get patches or gum etc.. if you cant afford em. try to cut down before you use em though.
try not to substitue food for the craving.
sugar free candies are good..toothpicks..cinnomin
cinnomin gum, greatfruit juice is great too..and any detox teas
ask me if ya have a question..all i can say is what i am doing
and good for you btw..smiles

Ok, was doing great for a while, now I'm back up there to about a pack a day. on days off. This is really important, I am getting little lines around my lips, and that is NOT acceptable...
What's working? E-smokes? Lozenges work for me at work, not so much at home, though. What to do while driving, or riding in the car, that's a big one, because I ALWAYS smoke while driving. What about after eating? Thinking my whole routine needs to completely change!
Haven't smoked in the house in years, so that is not a trigger. Take the dog out every morning while coffee is brewing...that's a big trigger, but he does need to go, lol.
Suggestions welcome---where the heck is Dapper? Hy always has a list of stuff!

Hey, buddy. I was thinking about you the last couple of days after this thread came back to life, but I was afraid to ask...
Things I did:
*Stopped drinking coffee and drank hot tea instead
*Stopped drinking beer
*Avoided italian foods for a while (tomato based foods), as this is what kicked off my "after cig delight" the most.
*Bought a bunch of those red skinny coffee stir straws (not the ones that are half closed, but instead look like regular straws, just skinnier...softer than the half closed ones...sorry, don't know how us to explain it). Cut them down to like 3 inches. Always had one in my mouth. Would chew on them.
You had gotten to a point where you were only having a couple a day. Can you go back to doing whatever it is you did then to get there?
*How about a mint after eating? The taste of a mint has never fueled me to want a cig like eating did.
Ok, that is my list!
Get your ass back in gear, woman!

Well ya know, even if I was speaking to myself I would check in..ha
It is the same to me as when I quit using other methods before in my life.
Stay in the moment, one day at a time and show up to the plate so to speak.
It keeps ya goin and honest with yourself..ha
No excues I mean..ya know.
And thank you for such wonderful support.

Day 10 of cutting down
Ok honestly, I thought by this time I would be able to cut down from 5-7 cigs to less than that...But today feels very RAW!
So I have decided rather than mess up, I will continue what route I have taken already untill it feels a little better to do so.
I think it is better to stay at this point than mess up and smoke more due to nerves.
I also realized a big..HUGE.. trigger is my teen son. That sounds bad ...huh?
He is very hyper and agrues sometimes is why. He is ADHA and on the 75% level of it. So it effects me right now..just sayin.
Anyways, still going strong.
I figure it took many years to create this addiction so a little patients with myself is needed.
again..thanks for all the support.

But it helps to atleast say it..even though in real time..I pace and try to be quiet..as to not advance my emotions .

You hit the proverbial nail on head.
This too shall pass...and it always does if you remain motivated.
There are no reasons to smoke, just excuses.

Well today has been truely a trying day to say the least. However I am still going strong and still on target.
While at the doctors today for my son"14" I was told if the three bumps we found don't go away by next week then more is going to have to be done.
Also they think the things coming out of my sons mouth are coming from his lungs. So yes today was a bit nerve wracking.
But I still have had only 5 smokes today and by the time i sleep probably add to 6
Just saying.. I am glad today is now in the relaxing hour..smiles

Thank you Lady Pamela! I will be back around as it will get hard. Smoking was when I gave myself a break, permission to step out and think before. I have a feeling I will stepping out and trying to count the stars so I still take that break.

Congrats on making the decision jenna.
That's exactly the way to think about it. Don't give up giving up. If you fall then just get right back on that tobacco free wagon again.

I'm bacccckkk!
Day one, again. I find when I get bored is the worst time....I just wanna run down to the store and buy a pack. Now that I am laid off for the next couple of months it is going to really be hard. I have a trip to Hampton, Va in a couple of weeks and driving and smoking is a big trigger, so I need to have some success!
I am glad to see you still cheering folks on Incubus.

I think you are doing great and right not to rush it.Maybe stay at 5 -7 until it is really easy to do that and then cut one a day out. Jean
