I was having a conversation with a younger friend, who because she is over (x) years old, believes she is too old for cuddle parties, getting a tattoo, travel, all kinds of things. I came right out and told her that I'm (x+never mind) years old, and blast my age, I'll be doing all those things and lots of other crazy stuff until I die. If you rest, you rust, I say.

I began to think that, except for dressing like my teenage daughter, I'm not really "too old" for much. I don't have the same social needs as a younger woman, and don't get a lot out of clubbing like a disco duck anymore, but it doesn't mean I would never go out dancing. If I made a great effort at getting into shape, I'd run marathons, but maybe flipping around in cartwheels isn't a great idea. I can't eat like I used to when I was younger, but that's a change I wanted to make anyway. But I can't offhand think of anything else.

Are there any activities that someone of (x+y) years is "too old" for, in your thoughts? How many of you have done something like bungee jumping or sky diving, or traveled to some far corner?

Rollerskating/blading.

I used to be so good when I was younger. I mean, REALLY good.

Then Mare took me to a roller rink after x-amount of years later and I realized I can't do that anymore. My mind remembered how - but my body said "oh hell no". Now it hurts when I fall, lol. The kind of ouchie that keeps me laid up for days.

I'm sure that if I picked it up and continued to practice it'll all come back, but at this point in my life - it's a been there, done that - and I'm okay with that. But I refuse to never say never.

but if I was still in Fla I would so still surf. I do skateboard still, but i have skater nephews and a lil one that likes to do stuff with me...keeps me young :)
Though I found out I can only last like 20 or 30 minutes during a watergun fight and im worn out :|

To old to do what my first GF & I used to do. We would work a double-shift (7:00AM to 11:30PM) @ the hospital, take a shower in the nurses lounge, get glammed up (hey we were both femmes-it was before I realized butches "did it" for me), we would drive to LA from OC, go to Peanuts (no longer there, but it was a great lesbian bar with dance floor) and we would dance until the bar closed. We would dance nearly every song.

We then would drive back to OC, sleep for 2-3 hours and get up and be at work for the morning shift Saturday morning, from 7AM to 3:30PM.

That is the difference between being in your 20's and 50's! Maybe I should make an "I" statement here- I am sure some 50+ year-old can still do this but there is no way I could physically do this now.

Do I wish that I still could, oh yes. They were fun, fun times!

I have no doubt I can still work 7a to 11p....even several days in a row

BUT I have my doubts, so I'll suffice to say, I'm too old to pull a double shift going 3p to 7a or worse yet 11p to 3p.

Notice no mentioning of clubbing and working.

Tending bar. (In a dance bar at least.) Anya's mention of Peanuts made me think back.... :)

Hey, Anya, remember:
Rage, Revolver, Executive Suite, The Flame?

Yes I do remember all if them. I went to the Executive Suite frequently because it was close to OC. It is/was in Long Beach-a few years ago drove by @ night saw a group of younger lesbians hanging around outside. They reminded me of my former self. It may still be there. I used to go there a lot.

I have been wracking my brains trying to remember the lesbian bar in Garden Grove, a dive, that all the OC lesbians went to.

I went once, by myself, when I first came out. All the older butches were hanging around by the back door-looked me up and down in my femme heels, etc., laughing saying: "well, well, what DO we have here?" Kind of like I was lost in the wrong place.

i've never gone sky diving, but one of my preceptors recently invited my group and i to go indoor sky diving up in Phoenix in September and i jumped on it. :) <pun intended>

i have been bridge jumping minus the bungee, so that must count for something! ;)

i am a total daredevil and love extreme sports/activities and i hope i'm never too old for anything. i've done 5k's and halves and love to run but still have a full marathon to tuck under my belt. soon though!

Whilst yer never too old to go out clubbing and dancing I only do it nowadays to remind myself why I don't go out clubbing and dancing anymore!
It certainly takes me days to recover whereas once upon a time, when I used to go out on Friday and not go home until Monday morning, all it took was a shower, a hearty breakfast and I felt ready for the week. To be fair, that was half a life-time ago.

work and chores
I just want to have fun, discover and do silly crazy things because they sound interesting and I think I might want to try them or enjoy them.
work/employment is getting in the way of that. And during the school year I must admit I am physically tired by the time I get home...so my oh lets try this zest is more of a ...oh lets think about that a bit more ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ kind of thing.
I dont want to mow the lawn, tend the gardens or any of that stuff,,,well only when I want to not when it wants me to...see the difference? And right now it wants me to do those things once a week and I am more inclined to think once a month....

contortion... I was up on the roof of the new garden shed I am building yesterday evening, crawling around laying strips to attach the roofing and when I got up to climb back down the ladder, my knees and legs turned to jello. LMAO! I got down and was like jesus god WTF???

I still take on tasks that in my 20's or 30's even were undaunting... I just have to allow a good deal more time to complete some of them and make sure not to take on physically rigorous/ dangerous things when I am less than 100%

( I personally prefer other ways to make "jello legs")

Okay, I'm NOT too old to think back on those days Anya/Georgia and Tapu were talking about!! I was stationed at Camp Pendleton from '79 to '81 and I remember staying out all night (on the weekends) and partying at those places like (San Diego) The Apartment, The Club (Laurel/Kettner), Diablo's (El Cajon Blvd), The Brass Rail, etc. In LA, it was Peanuts and in Long Beach, Que Sera. Oh, and there was this wonderful little bar in Palm Springs called "Aunt Hatties". We used to drunk line dance there, which is something I am waaaaay too old to do now. :|

Oh, and I'm too old and crippled to disco dance anymore, and I used to do that much better after a couple of shots of JD, chased with a few beers. I'm too old to drink like that anymore, too. In fact, I take too many meds to drink at all, these days.

...and I'm waaaaaaaayyyy (and crippled) to run a Marine Corps physical fitness test now. I used to run those hung over. Ugh. :seeingstars:

Those were the days!!! :hangloose:

But.....I ain't too damned old to remember...and still enjoy this, which I had on 8-track and used to listen to in my '78 Camaro:

I was at the grocery and stopped tpo have bread sliced. The oly one in the bakery was Sue. who does the cake decorations....She had 6 cakes lined up for the day. She told me that Saturday was a killer - she had 15 to do before 3 pm!

We talked for a few minutes about all our ailments, surgeries and tried to refer each other to the best ortho, best neuro, best back doc.

I am too old to play softball any longer, as I played the catcher position. No way can I squat for 2-3 hours and expect to stand for longer than 20 minutes!

But I can still find my way around a dance floor for a few 2 steps and sing karaoke until the cows come home! And "jello legs" are appropriate, but few and far between....*wink*

I dont know if I am too old for, or just too banged up for, things. I cant garden like I use to. But thats ok. I dont eat like I use to, so smaller gardens are good.

I cant eat like I use to. Not just smaller amounts but I also cant eat spicy things, heavy meats or sauces, milk products and items known to create high cholestral.

I cant love like I use to. I am way too guarded and damaged.

Think back:

I tended bar at the Flame for about a year and a half.
I tended bar at the Dinah Shore open, can't remember what year.
I worked door guard at the Boom-Boom Room, wearing a vintage leather jacket. (Laguna Beach, mostly men's bar. Had full aquariums under the bar so that when you leaned your elbows on it, you were staring down at tropical fish! Hard to forget that....)

Does any of this ring a bell? Probably not, but it would be cool if so.

Going out drinking too much. The dancing part I could still do as long as it's house music or a great band.
The music on the radio.
Holding on to petty stuff.

I was thinking about this earlier today, Theoddz posted about driving up from Pendleton 79-81 to go to Peanuts. We could have been dancing side by side and never knew it!

I was the femme wearing my hair in a big afro-type 'do (I thought it would be a good idea to get a perm though my hair is naturally curly) dancing with the Greek beauty with hair down to her waist!

Tapu, looking at your avatar I couldn't recall If I had seen you though I did go to the Boom Boom Room several times.

Hey, last I heard and saw, the Flame is still there, tho it wasn't when I was running around back then. I think it came a few years later. There was also The Box Office, which is also no longer there. Does anyone remember a bar called "Hoop's Coop" in Garden Grove?? It was a small place with a pool table or two and a lot of dykes!! :D

No wonder bar hopping to/from lesbian bars in San Diego, back in the late 70's and 80's had us all out all night....hell, all weekend!!! We used to cap it off with softball games in Balboa Park on Sunday afternoons, complete with picnic lunches.

Oh, and I'm too old for arm wrestling matches with the Navy women. We Women Marines used to do that back then, but I'm too old for that now. :winky:

Things I'm too old for:

Suffering fools gladly (which makes advancing at work difficult)

Boot-camp style workouts. They're how I lost 150 pounds, but when I messed up my knee as a result of those intense workouts, a lot of the weight came back. I really miss those.

Loving fearlessly. Too wounded and jaded for that.

Cohabitating. Oh, we can live in the same building, but maybe you need to live on a different floor from me.

Going to clubs, which breaks my heart. I don't want to look like the granny on the dance floor.

Being an activist out marching in the streets. I defer to you, younger sisters and brothers. I'll just stand over here and wave a placard.

Music festivals. I went to one recently and it just about did me in, sitting outside in the boiling heat all day.

Dating games. If you want me, and want to be with me, then do it. No head games. No disappearing acts. No drama.

Thank you Dante! SO glad you have unimpaired cognitive skills! Mine are slowly departing and long-term is supposed to be the last to go...

Yes, I even drove by it when I was in OC last week and it is now called the Hummingbird, a Ranchero music bar!

The Happy Hour is where the very butch butches looked me up and down laughing and said: "My, my what do we have here?" as I stood out like a sore thumb in my femme attire!

That part I did not forget.

Thanks:)

I am fortunately too old now to care what I can or cannot wear. I bought this FUNKY, again, FUNKY jacket from a company overseas. It arrived. I love it. There is NOTHING like it where I live. :giggle:

A good friend said "that is lovely, but where are you going to wear it". I replied "I'm 45, I'll wear it any damn place I want". :simplelaugh:

I wore it to "wicked" and it was fun to wear.

Now I want a pair of high red heeled shoes to match the pinstripe. Seriously when I was 25 or 30(ish) I never would have worn this outfit. I was way to worried about being judged. Lordy Lordy it feels great to be over 40.

I'm past the steroid shots in my knees, now I get what's called coxcomb injections every six months, once a week for three weeks to both knees. Love this thread... I'm too old to go out dancing to all hours of the night. A few weeks ago (thanksgiving weekend), I got a little cabin fever and decided to get the butch and go out to Mango (a women's dance that takes place from 3-7p.m. on a sunday). I haven't been to it prior but heard it was fun and it was at the El Rio, which has an outdoor area. i called a couple of friends that are close to our age. lol... we were out on the patio watching the kids dance (yes, they looked like they were 12) and I was thinking, "I feel like a chaperone at a high school dance" and about the same time i was thinking it, my friend said it out loud. We left shortly thereafter.

Anyways, I don't think I'm too old for a lot of things especially good fashion - I refuse to wear an old lady dress and flats. I don't care, it's not happening regardless.

For me, it would have to be roller skating. I loved doing this and would love to do it again. But the thought of getting out there and then falling down....soooo would not be a good thing. I have to many back issues now and it would hurt probably for weeks after, but I wish I could do it again.

My job. I have to be on my feet on tile floors, walk for what seems like miles, lift shit off high shelves that weighs way to much, and then put it back. My back is borderline with a bulging disc, I have plantar faschiaitis, and still, can work circles around some of the 20something year olds I work with. I just want to go to bed as soon as I get home some days!

Dating more than one woman at a time. No, I don't think there is anything wrong with this because dating isn't a relationship and sometimes it is good to aloow oneself to get to know more "possibles." But, I just don't have the energy to do this anymore. If I enjoy someone's company and we both want to find out about each other, I'd rather just see her. Also, I just don't feel like trying to relate at a deeper emotional level with more than one person in a romantic sense.

Obviously, I'm coming from a monogamous, long-term relationship perspective. We are all different.

It's a regional thing, I think, and maybe a sign of the times. People don't date like they did when I was young. When my daughter was a teenager in ND, you were a slut if you dated. You had to "go with" someone, one at a time. I just thought that would lead to trouble....and it probably did. Her cousin in Cali who was her same age did date like I did as a young woman.

I dated several at a time, and it was interesting getting to know each one. It helps sort out what you want in a relationship. And, when you're young, it helps you learn how to behave with someone.

Now that I'm in this community, I'd like to date more for that very reason, to get to know other people and to explore what relating is about.

Now that I'm in this community, I'd like to date more for that very reason, to get to know other people and to explore what relating is about.

I agree- and getting to know someone is important. I guess since I have spent 27 years "relating," and am now 60, I think I get relating (and am quite relational). I also think that in my age cohort (and I don't date much younger or much older women), it is also more limited- but I also find that there are many other things I want to do other than date with my time. And I honestly do like getting to know someone on many levels which, for me, takes time as well as experiencing how things go through the curve life throws me and what may be a major event in the life of who I am dating.

When I was young, the "going together" thing was more true also when I was heterosexual. This changed after realizing that my heart and soul was at peace with a woman. Although, by age 30, I wanted a monogamous "marriage." Prior to that I went through poly relationships and was also bisexual. I was rather experimental, now that I think about it.

Aging has also brough more of a need to savor what I am experiencing- the "the less time you have, the more you don't want to waste" phenomenon, I believe. So many things that I used to be able to cope with and compromise about, I just want to anymore. The "need" for a relationship/marriage has transformed into being about what I "desire and want" really.

I really enjoy dates full of conversation in which I feel listened to and want to return this to my date. Being able to laugh easily with someone I am dating is important as well as both of us not being afraid to let our faults show. We all have them- might as well get them out there and see if any are non-negotiables. And of course, I get anxious about all of this because I don't date anyone that I don't have a romantic and yes, physical "tug" for. Who likes rejection! But, it is part of life. Have to deal with it.

I also think that so much changes with aging and losing someone via death- a partner and also several loved ones.

I am certainly not Honey and can't speak for her, but I do know what it's like to date someone that's several years one's junior.

It's going through the same growth and crises and angst that you went through years ago but through your partner's eyes.

And it's freakin' draining.

I'm no one's trainer in my personal relationships. If they aren't where I am psychologically and emotionally and in general, then they are not with me.

P.S.~ Your question to her sounded a bit personal and catty to me. Just an observation.

What I bolded is one of the clearest statements about going through this situation I have ever read. And why more often than not (there are exceptions, but I always wonder about the developmental age of the more senior member in these), a large age difference doesn't work.

I also agree with your observation about some cattiness to the question and that it was a personal shot. I could be wrong- don't know either party, but keeping the personal out of the forums/threads is really appreciated.

My muscles seem to produce too much of that "after exercise " acid that my old, Lupus ridden body can't process and flush out correctly. I really miss my younger, VERY ACTIVE, VERY STRONG, able years and body. I miss muscles that work and kidneys that process toxins correctly. BUT.... none of what I feel today can take away my feeling of accomplishment and contentment from yesterday. I feel good emotionally even if the old body can no longer keep up.

I'm too old for my job on many days, too, and I've had both of my knees replaced to show for it. Hoofing it around a hospital for 12 hours a day, pushing equipment, ventilators with patients attached to them in hospital beds to places like CT Scan and procedure rooms. I can't do stairs anymore and I don't run to Code Blue's (I walk briskly). I don't even get adrenaline rushes in the ER anymore, like I used to. I just take care of the patients.

nonsense

watching a magnified view of someone I love very much do the same pattern over and over again and know they sincerely believe the outcome will be different this time around - breaks my heart into a bazillion pieces knowing the reality will eventually catch up with them again and again (yes, talking about mind altering substance addiction)
It is too painful for me to see the up/down extreme personality changes. Rags to riches ... back to rags. :(

I absolutely agree with Greco. I truly believe I was not meant to be alone on this earth. However, I was meant to learn a lot of life lessons before meeting the "One". After years of life lessons, I am patiently waiting for Hym. I will never settle again, nor be with someone just so I am not alone.

Rocky, best of luck with your journey back to the US. Let's stay in touch. Hard to believe it has been over 10 yrs since we first met.

Oh, and I totally relate to the comment about clubbing and then heading off to Denny's or somewhere like that before heading home. I think they call that "the good old days". lol

Oh no, it was breakfast at the doghouse for us. Went to 13 coins a few times, but the doghouse the best! (the coffee and french fries diet) I lived in an apt bldg full of young drag queens at that time (when the hill was the gayborhood and a poor, youngster could afford to live on the hill) ..the wonderful memories :) and the wildrose was still a coffee shop with great veggie burgers.

...about 25yrs ago and dancing like a loon all night long on a podium in what was then 'Pink Flamingo' gay club. I think nearly every northern UK queer has been to Flamingoes at least once in their lives. :cheesy:

Oh the good times rolled. It wasn't a good Saturday night unless:

I'd superglued red horns on Gary The Evil Queen's head.
Salome had chased me round the flat with one of her many wigs.
Snorted and dropped whatever.
Got lost on the spiral staircase.
Some straight guys had been 'chucked out' of the club for being stoopid boys looking for trouble.
Seen at least 2 lesbian fights; check shirts (or shiny shirts which was the fash. for a wee while there) flying and girlfriends shouting "she's not wurf it Shaz, leave 'er!"
I 'pulled' an outta town girl.

What a classy lot we weren't :cheesy:

Dodgeball. My co-worker wants me to play on her Dodgeball team. It is very tempting. I have to keep reminding myself that recently I went rolling skating at a roller rink with friends and busted my ass trying to show off with my slick moves I use to do to the disco hits over 30 yrs ago. In the last 5 minutes before closing time I got too confident and then my feet went flying out from under me as I was taking a tight turn around a corner. This is the person that use to be on the volleyball team, the basketball team, the tennis team, track team, 3 softball teams in one year and so on. And loved playing football and soccer. So, I'm still mulling over my age and if I'm ready to possibly get myself hurt. We'll see how it goes.
