Expiration Dates: A Scam to Get You to Buy More Food?

Do you pay attention to the expiration date printed on your food? Throw the stuff away as soon as you notice the "use by" date has come and gone because you're afraid it will make you sick?
Slow down. You might be tossing your groceries out way too soon ... and wasting a lot of money.
A new survey from ShelfLifeAdvice.com finds Americans unnecessarily throw out billions of dollars of food a year because they toss it too soon. That's right -- billions. That's a lot of cash. Gone. Just like that.
The report shows three-fourths of Americans think certain refrigerated foods are not safe to eat after the date on the package has passed. Those who took the survey were most worried about these five products -- milk, cottage cheese, mayonnaise, yogurt, and eggs.
But the truth is, if the foods are stored properly, most of them can be safe after the "use by" date. How much longer? Here's what the experts at ShelfLifeAdvice.com say:
Milk: If it's properly refrigerated, it will be safe, nutritious, and taste good for about a week after the "sell-by" date.
Cottage cheese: It should last 10-14 days after the date on the carton (or 10-14 days after you open it, if this period ends before the printed date).
Mayonnaise: If it’s unopened and refrigerated, it can be kept for 30 days after its expiration date or three to four months after opening.
Yogurt: It will be good 7 to 10 days after its "sell-by" date.
Eggs: If they’re properly refrigerated, they should last at least three to five weeks after the "sell-by" date.
So, waste not. Think of all the money you can save.

"Fork over Knives" is excellent. I saw it on Netflix. "Tapped" is another excellent one (on Netflix). It is about water sources, including the "spring" water that you think you are drinking out of the bottle that says "spring water" on it.
I am putting in a reverse osmosis water system in my kitchen and plan to only drink that water (carry with me).
Food Inc was good as well. I still need to see the Future of Food.
There are a few others, but I need to look them up before I pass them on, but I need to head to my second job.
It is definitely useful for me to watch documentaries that reinforce my belief that eating mostly vegan (I believe that some fish is healthy to eat, regularly), is the best way to go for health, as I miss meat and dairy terribly.

The project launched in Havana is truly inspirational. having lived in Miami, born and raised, around lots of cubans, it was common to see even the smallest back yard growing papaya, yucca, tomatoes, limes and more. The Cubans are very resourceful people which comes from living on an island and in a poor country. I lived in the everglades on 18 acres and there was a cuban family close by. they raised hens, goats, pigs and more. I loved these people so much and they loved me. I learned a lot from them.
I have beating drums lately trying to motivate Occupy protesters to occupy farms and empty lots to begin a food growing revolution. If Cuba can do it so can we.

Not a documentary, but alarming and worth noting -
Warning as infectious salmon disease spreads from Europe's fish farms to Canada
Anna Taylor
15th December, 2011
Discovery of the deadly salmon virus Infectious Salmon Anaemia in Canada is just latest likely example of disease spreading to wild fish stocks from the world's mega fish farms
The rise of the farmed fish industry in recent years has been accompanied by the emergence of many infectious diseases of fish. One of the most recent and serious diseases is the marine viral disease, Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA).
First detected in Atlantic salmon farmed along the southwest coast of Norway in 1984, it has since spread throughout the world.
As the name suggests, ISA shows itself by a severe anaemia, with fish displaying pale gills, and often swimming close to the surface of the water, gulping for air. More insidiously, however, many fish show no signs at all until they suddenly die.
An outbreak of the ISA was detected in wild Pacific salmon last October, in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Outbreaks of this virus have previously been detected in fish farms in Chile and Scotland, and although not dangerous to human health, have had serious impacts on the industry and the communities who depend upon it.
Infection spreading to wild fish
Effective management of the diseases of aquatic animals can be problematic. Often, too little is known about the infection itself, and infections can spread via flowing water and populations of wild fish sharing the same waters as farmed fish.
British Columbia’s ISA outbreak in wild salmon was discovered by researchers from Simon Fraser University, led by Professor Richard Routledge. Samples were taken in May and June last year as part of a ten year study into the importance of the Rivers Inlet area to migrating juvenile sockeye salmon.
'It was not until toward the end of the migration season, when we realised how few juvenile sockeye salmon we were going to be able to catch, that we began to consider possible causes of the low catch rate. ISAv was just one of several potential causes that we eventually considered,' said Professor Routledge.
Samples from 48 wild salmon were sent to the reference laboratory at the University of Prince Edward Island, the global centre for tests to detect the virus. They confirmed the presence of ISA in two of the fish. Subsequently, three out of ten fish collected from a tributary of Fraser River, the biggest wild salmon river in the world, also tested positive for the ISA virus. The three fish were all different species: coho, chinook, and chum salmon, and all three died before they had spawned, although the cause of death has not yet been determined.
These results have not surprised many scientists, who see infection in the wild population as inevitable and point the finger of blame at nearby fish farms. Rivers Inlet, where the positive samples were taken, is just 60 miles from the nearest salmon farm, and although there is no definitive evidence, the fact that it was the European strain of the virus which was detected, seems to suggest that this is a distinct possibility.
The aquaculture industry in British Columbia has imported millions of Atlantic salmon eggs from Norway and other countries in Europe for the past 25 years. Previously ISA had been found in ocean-going salmon, but was not deadly until it morphed into a virulent strain in Norway’s fish-farming pens. Poor aquaculture practices are thought to have contributed to the mutation, with unhealthy fish being fed antibiotics and living in densely packed pens. A diseased fish comes into close contact with many other fish, spreading ISA via urine, blood and other bodily fluids. As the fish farm has an open net, disease can be easily transferred to the outside world.
Professor Routledge believes that the fish farms are 'an important potential pathway for ISAv to be spread to wild Pacific salmon.'
Industry rejects call to reform fish farms
Many have been campaigning for years against open net fish farming. The Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform (CAAR), comprising of groups working to promote safe salmon farming in British Columbia, has led efforts to develop a safe salmon farming industry. Will Soltau who works for the Living Oceans Society, one of the member groups, says that CAAR has 'worked for the last decade to stop the expansion of open net-cage salmon farming in BC and advocate for transitioning the open net-cage farms into closed containment technology. That transition would separate the farmed fish from the wild fish and thereby eliminate a lot of the negative effect from the industry to the marine environment.'
Unfortunately, the Canadian Government has not acted on advice and the industry has resisted change. 'We are now faced with the possibility of this disease being introduced to the North Pacific Ocean for the first time and spreading in wild salmon stocks,' adds Mr Soltau.
Campaigners are right to be worried. In 2007, an outbreak of ISA in Chile decimated their lucrative farmed salmon industry. More than 100 fish farms were affected, with over a million fish being killed and 50 per cent of workers losing their jobs. The cost of ISA over the last 4 years is estimated to be around US$2 billion, and the industry is yet to recover from the impacts of the disease.
Scotland too has had to tackle its own outbreaks. In 1998/99, ISA was confirmed at 11 sites, and suspected at 34 additional sites, scattered across virtually the entire salmon farming region. The cost to the industry was estimated to have amounted to £30 million. Ten years later ISA returned, although this time on a much smaller scale. Six infected sites in Shetland were confirmed and depopulated of fish, and only after 2 years of monitoring and testing were they declared ISA free.
Shock of Canada disease outbreak
In British Columbia, salmon farming and the wild commercial salmon sector combined provides over 3,000 full-time equivalent jobs, and contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the provincial GDP. Salmon sport fishing is also important to the economy, and is a significant employer.
The news of ISA in British Columbia has surprised those in the industry. The British Columbia Salmon Farmers Association stated that their fish health departments regularly test farmed fish for ISA but have never found a positive result. In addition, the Canadian Government has conducted tests on the original wild samples.
They were sent to a laboratory at the University of Bergen in Norway, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced that the lab found no evidence of ISA.
However, this statement is misleading according to Professor Routledge. 'The Norwegian lab was able to generate one positive test result on a sample from one of the two fish that had previously tested positive, but the result was not repeatable. One explanation for the discrepancy that seems highly credible to me is that the samples were by then degraded.' The samples were of too poor a quality for the results to be replicated so the CFIA announced, somewhat controversially, that the results were negative.
Alexandra Morton, the marine scientist and outspoken wild salmon activist who collected the Fraser River samples, cannot understand the government’s response. 'Why would government jump out and deny evidence of ISA virus in BC? If the samples were poor wouldn't it make sense to go back to the places where the positive tested fish came from and take their own samples? How can we take any confidence when government says everything is fine because the virus was found in poor quality samples?' She continues: 'ISA virus is the most deadly salmon virus known, it plagues salmon farms worldwide but Canada is going to ignore the results from two of the top ISA virus labs in the world, because the samples were of poor quality?'
Alaska fears spread to its fish
While the Canadian Government is playing down the fears of ISA, the United States Government has taken the opposite stance. In a statement released by senators from Washington State and Alaska, fears were expressed that the Canadian government may be too close to the multi-billion dollar industry. They called upon the United States to conduct their own tests, as 'we should not rely on another government – particularly one that may have a motive to misrepresent its finding – to determine how we assess the risk ISA may pose to American fishery jobs. We have to get a coordinated game plan in place to protect our salmon and stop the spread of this deadly virus.'
As ‘Salmongate’ (as the North American press have dubbed this debate) continues, it is clear that more tests are needed to confirm the initial findings. 'I believe that top priority needs to be given to collecting, preserving, and analysing new samples under tight protocols to obtain more definitive evidence regarding the presence, geographic range, origin, etc., of the virus in the North Pacific,' says Professor Routledge.
The stakes are high, especially with so many people dependent on salmon-related industries in the Pacific Northwest. Campaigners are viewing the ISA outbreak as one reason why changes to aquaculture procedures are essential, but scientists admit that they are on a steep learning curve. Swift action is necessary, but no country has ever managed to completely eradicate ISA, and reverberations of this outbreak may be felt far and wide for many years to come.

the problem with lots of farm raised fish is that it requires more fishing to feed those fish. it takes much more weight in feeder fish to feed a farm raised salmon than the salmon will weigh when it goes to market. so it's actually counterproductive as well as polluting and host to a number of issues like gmo fed fish, gmo fish themselves (that's in the works), and diseases.
edited to add....i've reduced our fish intake to only fish wild caught in Alaska because Alaska is the only place in the world that actively fishes sustainably. (that i know of) i know Oregon has recently made strides along these lines but i'm not sure how much Oregon coast caught fish makes it out of the state. Oregonians are very into buying local. i no longer eat seafood out and it makes me sad to see tuna still in stores and restaurants.

regardless of the words or facade they project, I have never known the government to be for the people. I see some attempts to do the right thing but it all boils down to another agenda. Some play the game better then others but all in all its a game.
My son said to me the other day that if I thought I pissed people off with all my ranting about animal care and food safety. I honestly don't care the people that want to listen can listen and those who don't cant get pissed off, ignore me or anything else. I find it difficult to even be around people who are not conscious enough to care. This is the honest truth. I listen to southern small talk and the lack of respect for our animals and planet and I just want to take a machine gun and put them out of their misery. lol As I get older I become more passionate and I feel that if my ranting reaches even one person and they think before they buy or they stop shoving artificial crap down their childs throat, just one person then I have made change and that is worth it to me. We simply can not stop talking, sharing, giving and asking people to consider the big picture. Not ever.
I don't waste my time donating to BS charities and the local food coalition, which I removed myself from is all fed by government propaganda, red tape and control. If anything is going to get done when it comes to food safety then it will be grass roots and each one of us helping even one person change the way they think. You'd be surprised how much can get done. So if I can influence a dozen mothers, teach them to buy and prepare organic then those dozen mothers are supporting the local food system and taking money out of the chemicals companies because their kids dont need it. I live in an area that is not receptive to these things. Its not the major metro areas where being green is cool. Here you have to fight with the store managers to get them to carry even one organic item.

Now is the time to buy non=gmo organic seeds and learn how to save your seeds to replant. Its been done this way for 100's of years. If you live in a farming community where GMO crops are close by then you may have a problem.
I think that you will see more and more people setting up cold frames and controlled environments to protect food. I'm lucky that there are no major crops and planting close by because its hilly but its still a concern.

the only way to really know is to have the DNA tested. gmo products will have a marker gene that's clearly identifiable, but how does the average person do this? here's a link to a testing supply house:

bees will infect your plants by carrying gmo pollen around. since bees travel up to two miles or more there is no real way to know unless you test your stuff. this is also why there's no such thing as organic honey. and lots of gmo sites are secret, which is another huge problem.

well bees are a whole other source of food related contention for me, with a whole slew of OTHER issues surrounding the world's bee hive populations and the honeys extracted from those hives both politically and ethically. regulations that are currently in place are openly defied regularly by other countries (like China) who dump toxic honey in our ports illegally. this stuff ends up in our processed foods....like Honey Nut Cheerios for example. never buy honey in a plastic bear. it's pretty certain to be mystery honey of unknown origins...likely China....full of chemicals and antibiotics that aren't even legal for use in the states.
and of course bees inadvertently compound the gmo problems in agriculture by spreading gmo DNA via pollen. then there's the whole hive collapse syndrome which no one seems to agree on what THAT problem is. clearly, it's a combination of a multitude of factors....a bee parasite, monoculture, pesticides, herbicides, hive applications of antibiotics, and i suspect....gmo pollens aren't helping.

There is a food revolution happening in America today. People are seeking out farmers' markets, organic produce and good restaurants. At the same time, our food supply is increasingly controlled by multi-national corporations.
Over the past 10 years, with the advent of genetic engineering and the massive expansion of pesticide companies, like Monsanto, into the seed business, the very nature of our food system has radically changed with potentially disastrous effects on our food security. Patenting of life is now permitted, no labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMO's) in food is required, research is conducted on these issues by universities beholden to the "agri-corps" who fund them, and the major regulatory agencies are run by former execs from these very companies.
All the while, the average citizens remain blissfully unaware that they are eating GMO food and supporting the aggressive "corporatization' of their food sources. In fascinating and accessible terms, 'The Future of Food' illuminates the major issues ultimately affecting us all -- some surreal, some futuristic, many frightening.
Yet, 'The Future of Food' is a hopeful film, featuring insightful and moving interviews with farmers, agriculture and business experts and policymakers. It sees a future in which an informed consumer can join the revolution by demanding natural, healthy food sources that insure environmental integrity.

Not trying to tell you what to do, I am just thinking that food is a great topic and that maybe we would reach more people to participate there?
Just a thought!
I think its an excellent idea and agree

Dapper, I think your idea of a discussion thread on the Conscious living forum is a good one. I've started a discussion thread there for us to share our ideas, concerns, and most importantly solutions.
This thread will remain a thread for the sharing of documentaries on food, and related issues. No discussion necessary here. My intention is to have a library of sorts for these documentaries. Thinking harder is what these documentaries are all about, hence its location.
Thanks for your suggestion DapperButch.

First-time director Morgan Spurlock takes a look at the subject of obesity in the United States, specifically zeroing in on the business and culture surrounding the nation's fast-food industry in this 2004 documentary. In addition to studying the marketing of fast food to American children and unsuccessfully attempting to gain an interview with McDonald's executives, Spurlock attempts to become one of his own subjects by documenting a one-month binge during which he survived only on items from the McDonald's menu, forcing himself to eat three meals a day and try every offering at least once.
This documentary was the first that really started me
thinking about how I fed myself, and its impact on
my health.
In it I focus on how his health declined so quickly, and
recovered after his self-experiment was over. It was
made back in 1995 and I remember viewing it in the theater.
It links up to Forks Over Knives IMO.

First class chefs Bobby Flay, Michael Symon, Anne Burrell and Alex Guarnaschelli tackle one of the most massive problems in food today - waste! Divided into two teams, with only 48 hours on the clock, they are challenged to create a multi course gourmet banquet worthy of their great reputations, but with a big twist; they can only use food that is on its way to the trash. The chefs' hunt takes them from grocery aisles to produce farms, and orchard lines to garbage piles, as they attempt to source enough ingredients to feed a gathering crowd. Bobby and Michael square off against Anne and Alex, as they challenge their views of food waste and how and why it is created.

Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead Extended Trailer
Gv3vEXy_EwU
100 pounds overweight, loaded up on steroids and suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease, Joe Cross is at the end of his rope and the end of his hope. In the mirror he saw a 310lb man whose gut was bigger than a beach ball and a path laid out before him that wouldn't end well- with one foot already in the grave, the other wasn't far behind. FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD is an inspiring film that chronicles Joe's personal mission to regain his health. With doctors and conventional medicines unable to help long-term, Joe turns to the only option left, the body's ability to heal itself. He trades in the junk food and hits the road with juicer and generator in tow, vowing only to drink fresh fruit and vegetable juice for the next 60 days. Across 3,000 miles Joe has one goal in mind: To get off his pills and achieve a balanced lifestyle. While talking to more than 500 Americans about food, health and longevity, it's at a truck stop in Arizona where Joe meets a truck driver who suffers from the same rare condition. Phil Staples is morbidly obese weighing in at 429 lbs; a cheeseburger away from a heart-attack. As Joe is recovering his health, Phil begins his own epic journey to get well. What emerges is nothing short of amazing - an inspiring tale of healing and human connection. Part road trip, part self-help manifesto, FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD defies the traditional documentary format to present an unconventional and uplifting story of two men from different worlds who each realize that the only person who can save them is themselves.

• Heart disease and stroke claim the lives of 460,000 American women per year.
• There are 215,000 new cases of prostate cancer per year in American men.
• “We have a growing problem and the ones who are growing are us.” – Katie Couric.

In 1973, British economist E.F. Schumacher wrote “Small is Beautiful – Economics as if People Mattered”, – a book that offered a vision of an economy driven by a desire for harmony, not greed; an economy based on community and ecological values, not global financial derivatives. In the 1970s, “Small is Beautiful” helped launch a back-to-the-land movement that is the ancestor to the Local Food Revolution of today.
For the last three decades, the E.F. Schumacher Society has transformed Schumacher’s ideas into a series of practical innovations – reinventing much of the local economy of Great Barrington, Massachusetts and southern Berkshire County in the process.
Chris Bedford’s 37 minutes film, COMING HOME: E.F. It's about time!
I could not stop watching this documentary, well done! It was nice to see the pay it forward acts and the movement of people getting involved throughout their journey.
I was a top athlete in high school and am still in good shape, but 15 months ago I woke up having very extreme back problems with my discs and nerves. I couldn't even move my legs and i lost count to how many doctors I have seen. I tried oral steroid packs, steroid injections in my spine, chiropractors, now currently on anti seizure meds to help with nerve pain. I hate taking the pills but they help my pain.
I was very inspired by this film and I am a strong believer that the human body is capable of healing itself with the proper diet and exercise or "healthy lifestyle". I feel I have already started to prove this when I rejected further steroid treatment and started doing yoga which has helped my pain tremendously! In fact for the fist time in 15 months, last week I was able to play basketball and it felt awesome!!!
I am buying a juicer tomorrow and will hopefully soon see some results for my condition. I would love nothing more but to get through a day with no pain and no more meds! :)
Incredibly inspiring...enjoy, Greco

"The Beautiful Truth"
wvzDHGLEUyw&list=WLD2DE9D018DA2EAC2&index=89&feature=plpp_video
Raised on a wildlife reserve in Alaska, 15-year-old Garrett was interested in the dietary habits of the farm animals. After the tragic death of his mother, Garrett's father decided to home-school his son and assigned a book written by Dr. Max Gerson that proposed a direct link between diet and a cure for cancer.
Fascinated, Garrett embarks in this documentary on a cross-country road trip to investigate The Gerson Therapy. He meets with scientists, doctors and cancer survivors who reveal how it is in the best interest of the multi-billion dollar medical industry to dismiss the notion of alternative and natural cures.

And another description of this documentarty:
A troubled 15-year-old boy attempting to cope with the recent death of his mother sets out to research Dr. Max Gerson's claims of a diet that can cure cancer as his first assignment for home-schooling in this documentary from filmmaker Steve Kroschel (Avalanche, Dying to Have Known). Garrett is a boy who has always been close to nature. He lives on a reserve with a menagerie of orphaned animals, and over the years he's become especially sensitive to the nutritional needs of the diet-sensitive animals he's charged with caring for. When Garrett's mother suffers a tragic and untimely death, the boy falls into a dangerous downward spiral and nearly flunks out of school. Increasingly concerned for Garrett's well-being and determined to strengthen their bond despite the many challenges on the horizon, his father makes the decision to begin home-schooling the distressed teen. Garrett's first assignment: study a controversial book written by Dr. Max Gerson, a physician who claims to have discovered a diet that's capable of curing cancer. Is Dr. Gerson's therapy truly the legitimate, alternative cure it appears to be? In order to find out the truth behind this long-suppressed treatment, Garrett interviews not only Dr. Gerson's family members, but various doctors, skeptics, and cancer patients as well. His studies completed and his findings revelatory, Garrett now sets out to tell the entire world about The Gerson Miracle.

This is great video to share with people who are clueless over the food safety issues. Especially people with kids.
Robyn shares her personal story and how it inspired her current path as a "Real Food" evangelist. Grounded in a successful Wall Street career that was more interested in food as good business than good-for-you, this mother of four was shaken awake by the dangerous allergic reaction of one of her children to a "typical" breakfast. Her mission to unearth the cause revealed more about the food industry than she could stomach, and impelled her to share her findings with others. Informative and inspiring.
About this speaker
Robyn authored "The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It." A former Wall Street food industry analyst, Robyn brings insight, compassion and detailed analysis to her research into the impact that the global food system is having on the health of our children. She founded allergykidsfoundation.org and was named by Forbes as one of "20 Inspiring Women to Follow on Twitter." The New York Times has passionately described her as "Food's Erin Brockovich."

"What has happened to us? Despite the most advanced medical technology in the world, we are sicker than ever by nearly every measure.
Two out of every three of us are overweight. Cases of diabetes are exploding,
especially amongst our younger population. About half of us are taking at least one prescription drug. Major medical operations have become routine, helping to drive health care costs to astronomical levels. Heart disease, cancer and stroke are the country's three leading causes of death, even though billions are spent each year to "battle" these very conditions. Millions suffer from a host of other degenerative diseases.
Could it be there's a single solution to all of these problems? A solution so comprehensive but so utterly straightforward, that it's mind-boggling that more of us haven't taken it seriously?
FORKS OVER KNIVES examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the so-called "diseases of affluence" that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. The major storyline in the film traces the personal journeys of a pair of pioneering yet under-appreciated researchers, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn."

HOW TO TELL THE TRUTH AND GET IN TROUBLE
I am a fourth-generation dairy farmer and cattle rancher. I grew up on a dairy farm in Montana, and I ran a feedlot operation there for twenty years. I know firsthand how cattle are raised and how meat is produced in this country.
Today I am president of Earth Save International, an organization promoting organic farming and the vegetarian diet.
Sure, I used to enjoy my steaks as much as the next guy. But if you knew what I know about what goes into them and what they can to do you, youd probably be a vegetarian like me. And, believe it or not, as a pure vegetarian now who consumes no animal products at all, I can tell you these days I enjoy eating more than ever.
If youre a meat-eater in America, you have a right to know that you have something in common with most of the cows youve eaten. Theyve eaten meat, too.
When a cow is slaughtered, about half of it by weight is not eaten by humans: the intestines and their contents, the head, hooves, and horns, as well as bones and blood. These are dumped into giant grinders at rendering plants, as are the entire bodies of cows and other farm animals known to be diseased. Rendering is a $2.4 billion-a-year industry, processing forty billion pounds of dead animals a year. There is simply no such thing in America as an animal too ravaged by disease, too cancerous, or too putrid to be welcomed by the all-embracing arms of the renderer. Another staple of the renderers diet, in addition to farm animals, is euthanized pets - the six or seven million dogs and cats that are killed in animal shelters every year. The city of Los Angeles alone, for example, sends some two hundred tons of euthanized cats and dogs to a rendering plant every month. Added to the blend are the euthanized catch of animal control agencies, and road kill. (Road kill is not collected daily, and in the summer, the better road kill collection crews can generally smell it before they can see it.) When this gruesome mix is ground and steam-cooked, the lighter, fatty material floating to the top gets refined for use in such products as cosmetics, lubricants, soaps, candles, and waxes. The heavier protein material is dried and pulverized into a brown powder-about a quarter of which consists of fecal material. The power is used as an additive to almost all pet food as well as to livestock feed. Farmers call it protein concentrates. In 1995, five million tons of processed slaughterhouse leftovers were sold for animal feed in the United States. I used to feed tons of the stuff to my own livestock. It never concerned me that I was feeding cattle to cattle.

http://preventdisease.com/news/12/042512_Exposing-Kashi-Cereal-For-The-Poison-That-It-is.shtml
Exposing Kashi Cereal For The Poison That It Is
There is an established misconception among consumers that natural or even organic labeling means more nutritious and less toxic ingredients. This is not always the case and breakfast cereals are no exception. The Kashi brand is owned by Kellogg Company, one of the largest breakfast cereal makers in the world. The ownership base of Kashi is still not widely recognized or common knowledge, especially since the Kashi website continues to paint a picture of being a small company. Investigations into Kashi cereals show deceiving claims after their breakfast products were found to be riddled with genetically modified (GM) and pesticide loaded ingredients.
The deception at Kashi runs deep, especially when it comes to its association with Kellogg which is kept very discreet from the public.
"We are a small (after 25 years, still fewer than 70 of us) band of passionate people," it says, despite being owned by the nation's largest cereal manufacturer. Kellogg does not include its name on Kashi packaging.
The Cornucopia Institute's "Cereal Crimes" investigation uncovered some distrubing facts about this supposed natural breakfast cereal. The investigations found that Kashi brand cereals contain "high levels" of genetically engineered ingredients. These include soy and corn based ingredients.
For non-organic "natural" products making "non-GMO" claims, results showed that these claims cannot always be trusted.
Most companies do not share detailed standards for "natural" foods with the public. Kashi would likely be uncomfortable sharing with their
customers that their "natural" foods contain hexane-extracted and genetically engineered soy ingredients.
On August 31, 2011, a class action lawsuit was filed against Kashi for allegedly misleading consumers with its "natural" claims. One Kashi
product in particular, GoLean Shakes, is composed almost entirely of synthetic and unnaturally processed ingredients, according to the plaintiff.
Kashi Heart to Heart Blueberry Cereal was found to contain organophosphate pesticides implicated as causes of neuropathy in humans.
"Natural" Kashi Golean Honey almond Flax was found to contain malathion in the wheat and chlorpyrifos and piperonyl butoxide in the almonds both which are prohibited in organics due to their neurotoxicity and hormone disrupting ability in mammals.
Other toxic ingredients in Kashi cereals include GM canola oil, GM corn flour, GM corn meal, GM corn bran, irradiated cinnamon and soy lecithin.
Golean Original Cereal contains GM soy grits and protein, GM corn meal, GM corn flour and GM corn bran.
Golean Crisp! Cinnamon Crumble contains GM soy grits and protein, GM canola oil, GM corn flour, irradiated cinnamon and soy lecithin.
Golean Crisp! Toasted Berry Crumble contains GM soy grits and protein, GM canola oil, GM corn flour and soy lecithin.
All other Golean products contain similar toxins in their ingredient lists.
Kashi sources all of their grains from farms in the US. They do import some fruits from other countries, but the soy is primarily grown in the USA. Corn-based ingredients are also locally derived. Since 95% of Soy and 80% of Corn is Genetically Modified you can expect any non-organic product that contains either of these two ingredients to be GM.
Kashi has attempted to improve their public image by joining the Non-GMO Project and have their products tested and verified to be GMO-free. The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization which offers North America’s only third party verification and labeling for non-GMO food and products.Their standard includes the following;
"Absence of all GMOs is the target for all Non-GMO Project Standard compliant products. Continuous improvement practices toward achieving this goal must be part of the Participant’s quality management systems."
However since cross pollination can occur, there is never enough testing procedures to follow-up on every single grower's operation. That's why many products still contain GM corn and soy, despite being enrolled in the Non-GMO Project. According to the Cornucopia Institute, the Non-GMO Project "enrolls" products before it verifies them as being non-GMO which doesn't make very much sense.
It is in your best interest to stay away from anything Kashi or Kellogg. Always remember that "natural" and even some "organic" standards depend on how these standards impact profitability. Environmental
concerns are unlikely to weigh heavily, if at all, in this profitability equation. If the company is a publicly traded corporation, such as Kellogg Company their primary legal responsibility is to increase
profits for shareholders. Consumer opinion is insignificant until it reaches the masses and a full boycott is achieved. So how many people will you share this with? Only you can make a difference.

Fresh is a new documentary celebrating the rising movement of farmers, thinkers and business people who are reinventing our food system across America. Each has witnessed the current industrial model's consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources and obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for our future. Among several onscreen figures, Fresh features urban farmer and activist Will Allen, sustainable farmer and entrepreneur Joel Salatin, The Omnivore's Dilemma author Michael Pollan and Kansas City supermarket owner David Ball, who stocks his stores with products from local suppliers. Seeking to prod us away from cynicism or resignation, Fresh is a call to action that all of us can support a new type of food system that is viable and healthy for all consumers.

This is wonderful to see. I think it is critically important to eat local, preferably something you have growing right outside your back door. I know it is not feasible for everyone. But progress towards as fresh and whole as can be.... that will make a real difference in our health and well being.
Fresh is best. Get to know the ones growing, producing your food, what is more intimate afterall than what you put into your body each and everyday!
It is a sacred thing, to me. Hence why breaking bread with people is truly a spiritual experience, it is an honour and gets to the very heart of what makes us tic.

I suggest a number of research topics to my students. I'm proud to say that one became very interested in the current state of our "food systems" and the future of food and human and planetary health. Here's a piece of good news for those who are already supporting farmers markets or on the fence or trying to convince friends and families to go. And I love this quote and couldn't agree more: "...farmers’ markets prices were generally lower than or, at worst, equal to supermarket prices...Besides, the experience of shopping at a farmers’ market makes food buying into an adventure instead of just a chore."
Myth of High Prices at the Farmers Market
http://dingo.care2.com/pictures/causes/2937/2936367.large.jpg
by Cathryn Wellner
May 3, 2012
I still hear people say they cannot afford to shop at a farmers’ market. They argue only the well heeled can afford to buy free-range eggs and heirloom tomatoes at those pricey venues. The only thing is, that idea does not stand up to scrutiny. A 2011 study for the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont turned up surprising results. Prices were actually lower at the farmers’ markets, particularly for organic items.
Those findings were similar to what the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture discovered in a 2009 survey of Iowa products. And two years earlier, University of Washington students compared prices between a Seattle supermarket and a nearby farmers’ market. In all three cases — Vermont, Iowa, and Seattle — farmers’ markets prices were generally lower than or, at worst, equal to supermarket prices.
These are only the most widely publicized results. One of the common reasons for not buying from local farmers turns out to be based on a story that does not bear up under scrutiny. Do a test at a market nearby, and you will likely be surprised by the results. Besides, the experience of shopping at a farmers’ market makes food buying into an adventure instead of just a chore.
Join the Food Revolution
Farmers’ markets are a good place to join the Food Revolution. You can also check out the Food Revolution Map to see where things are happening in your community.
If shopping at a farmers’ market just doesn’t feel like a fit for you, don’t despair. In Seattle, you can contribute to a community e-cookbook. Or get involved with a community garden in Crete, Nebraska.
Boise, Idaho has jumped on board to bring the community together through fresh, local foods. A group of young chefs in Downington, Pennsylvania are determined to change their community’s knowledge and health concerning food.
If your city isn’t on the map, gather allies and become a Food Revolution Community with your own, unique focus. And if being part of a larger movement is not your thing, don’t despair. On Saturday, May 19th, you can still be part of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution by shopping at your local farmers’ market.

After experiencing the traumatizing death of her daughter to kidney failure just three days after her daughter was born, Sofia Gatica from Argentina became determined to find out what killed her daughter. Her conclusion? Monsanto's genetically modified soy fields that surrounded her neighborhood, laced with damaging insecticides negatively affecting nearby neighborhood children and adults alike.
Gatica began to detail how her small town was plagued with astronomically high birth defect rates, respiratory disease, and even infant mortality. From this point, the courageous mother decided to take on Monsanto.
Amazingly, she is not alone in her struggle against the biotechnology colossus when it comes to causing birth problems, as a large group of farmers — also from Argentina — have launched a lawsuit against Monsanto for causing 'devastating birth defects' in children. Gatica was initially alone, however, when she first began her uphill battle.
Forming a group of concerned mothers in her local area of Ituzaingó after hosting an event at her home to discuss her experiences, the mother would be one of the very few who has actually beat Monsanto.
After sharing her story with local mothers who were also concerned for the safety of their children and families as a whole, Gatica co-founded the Mothers of Ituzaingó — an action group of 16 mothers collaborating to end Monsanto's rampant chemical usage. The team took to the streets, going door to door to create what was the first epidemiological study of the area, only to discover that the effects of Monsanto's concoctions were dramatically affecting many families in the town of Ituzaingó.
With cancer rates 41 times the national average, something had to be done.
As a result of the serious campaign to eradicate Monsanto, the mothers were rewarded. Argentina's Supreme Court not only banned chemical spraying near populated areas, but demanded that the government, as well as soy manufacturers, now prove that these chemicals are safe.
Sofia Gatica is now being honored for her great environmental work with the Goldman Environmental prize, a major environmental award given to activists. The story shows just how serious activism can take down most any threat — even Corrupt Monsanto
!Bien echo Sra Gatica!

Farmageddon - The truth about the food and dairy industry
5uah8LBUbfc&feature=g-vrec
Americans' right to access fresh, healthy foods of their choice is under attack. Farmageddon tells the story of small, family farms that were providing safe, healthy foods to their communities and were forced to stop, sometimes through violent ac-tion, by agents of misguided government bureaucracies, and seeks to figure out why.
Filmmaker Kristin Canty's quest to find healthy food for her four children turned into an educational journey to discover why access to these foods was being threatened. What she found were policies that favor agribusiness and factory farms over small family-operated farms selling fresh foods to their communities. Instead of focusing on the source of food safety problems — most often the industrial food chain — policymakers and regulators implement and enforce solutions that target and often drive out of business small farms that have proven themselves more than capable of producing safe, healthy food, but buckle under the crushing weight of government regulations and excessive enforcement actions.
Farmageddon highlights the urgency of food freedom, encouraging farmers and consumers alike to take action to preserve individuals' rights to access food of their choice and farmers' rights to produce these foods safely and free from unreasona-bly burdensome regulations. The film serves to put policymakers and regulators on notice that there is a growing movement of people aware that their freedom to choose the foods they want is in danger, a movement that is taking action with its dollars and its voting power to protect and preserve the dwindling number of family farms that are struggling to survive.

Aspartame Sweet Misery, A Poisoned World
usGh-SRUWBQ
Documentary by: Sound and Fury Productions.
Source: Mercola.com
If a product is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and composed of natural ingredients, would you assume it is safe to consume?
If the same product is an artificial sweetener, would you assume it helps control your weight?
Millions of people use aspartame, the artificial sweetener known as NutraSweet, with these assumptions in mind.
Aspartame can be found in thousands of products such as:
instant breakfasts
breath mints
cereals
sugar-free chewing gum
cocoa mixes
coffee beverages
frozen desserts
gelatin desserts
juice beverages
laxatives
multivitamins
milk drinks
pharmaceuticals and supplements, including over-the-counter medicines
shake mixes
soft drinks
tabletop sweeteners
tea beverages
instant teas and coffees
topping mixes
wine coolers
yogurt
However, aspartame's tainted history of approval and potentially toxic ingredients cast serious doubt on the safety of this sugar substitute. Furthermore, aspartame may actually increase your appetite (Farber 52).
While the FDA approval may signal the green light for safe consumption, 85 percent of all complaints registered with the FDA are for adverse reactions to aspartame, including five reported deaths. A closer look at the unscientific studies, suspicious approval methods, and its harmful ingredients, reveal the hidden dangers of this artificial sweetener. In reality, aspartame poses a public health threat.

Part sociological experiment and part adventure comedy, Vegucated follows three meat- and cheese-loving New Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks. Lured by tales of weight lost and health regained, they begin to uncover the hidden sides of animal agriculture that make them wonder whether solutions offered in films like Food, Inc. go far enough. This entertaining documentary showcases the rapid and at times comedic evolution of three people who discover they can change the world one bite at a time. (http://www.getvegucated.com)

I was a little annoyed last night, when I found an entire section of the freezer, at the local whole foods market, dedicated to Kashi products. Gross. It is frustrating to me, to have to research every single food product, because their labeling is so misleading.
When I explain to people the reasons for my food choices, they are turned off by the fact that they can't just pick something up without doing so much leg work. I think most people just give up, because it is all so confusing. I really wish consumers were better protected with crystal clear labeling. Unfortunately, the deep pocketed food industry works very hard at pumping crap into our bodies with clever marketing.

There are diets proven to not only prevent and treat

formal nutrition training in medical school, graduating
without some of the most powerful tools available to

Here at NutritionFacts.org, we believe that a significant
part of the problem is that individuals who want to make
the correct dietary choices for themselves and their families
are faced with a deluge of confusing and conflicting nutritional

I have learned a lot from the very informative posts that have been made here, over the years. Like many, I too thought the documentary Forks Over Knives was worth watching. So very informative.
I recently came across a food documentary that talks about the types of food we eat and how it affects our brain. It's a BBC doc, and I liked it a lot. I have had a life long struggle with food that is sugary or foods that convert instantaneously to sugar in your blood stream. I learned a lot from the presentation of little known food facts in this documentary.
