Woman named Jesus Christ called for Jefferson County jury duty
By Erin Stock -- The Birmingham News
December 01, 2009, 4:30PM
Jesus Christ was called for jury duty this week in Jefferson County.
Court officials were skeptical at first when on Monday a potential juror submitted a name change form with "Jesus Christ" on it. But the 59-year-old Birmingham woman, who previously went by Dorothy Lola Killingworth, assured the presiding judge that was her name.
"It raised eyebrows, so I asked her if that were truly her name," Circuit Court Judge Scott Vowell said. "She assured me that it was. She had her name changed in the Probate Court, and she presented her driver's license."
Christ was sent to Judge Clyde Jones's courtroom for a criminal case. She was excused because she was disruptive, court officials said. Instead of answering questions, she was asking them, a court employee in Jones's office said.
Efforts to reach Christ today were unsuccessful.
Court administrator Sandra Turner said she and others in the jury assembly room were somewhat shocked at first when the woman insisted Christ was her name. And when her name was called, several potential jurors laughed out loud.
Unlike some Jefferson County residents, Christ did not try to get out of jury duty, Turner said.
"She was perfectly happy to serve," said Turner.
You know, here in the Bits-n-Bites world we have restrictions on signing up with certain names (e.g., Guest, Admin, Moderator, etc.). They are considered special role names. One would have thought that Jesus Christ would also be one of those.. but who knew, eh? :seeingstars:

Pretty ridiculous.
We've seen judges squash attempts for parents to change a kid's name to something far-fetched. I'm pretty sure they could have done the same here.
Personally, I think it's immature of her to do such a thing. *Obviously* it's an attention-seeking move.

Wow--this is pretty odd.
Reminds me of this portion of Bill Cosby's comedic routine:
YouTube- Bill Cosby Thought He Was Jesus Christ

I remember that Bill Cosby piece (from the Himself DVD). Totally awesome.
Part of me can also understand the why it would be allowed. I mean, it's a name; a variation of a label. We choose to associate meaning and importance to this specific label because religion. As the Bard said:
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
It would be no different than denying a person to choose their own name and the reasons why they choose it.

I have to agree, Linus, I find the situation (and Cosby skit) very amusing.
I could also see how some would get aggravated at her choice of name. As an agnostic who formerly lived in Alabama, I'm quite curious ('cause I'm nosey like that) at this woman's reasoning and logic--but I'm not offended in the least.
"Jesus" is not an uncommon name; and, "Christ" only gradually gained signficance. This might be of interest (brief eytmology of 'jesus christ')-->LINK (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08374x.htm)

I find it interesting that Jesus in Spanish is a pretty usual name, but I have not heard of anyone naming themself Jesus in English. I wonder why?
Jesus Christ is definitely taking it to the next level! Ha.
Thanks for posting!

Oh.. I get to add another "Say what?!"
On his daily radio and television shows last week, Fox News personality Glenn Beck set out to convince his audience that "social justice," the term many Christian churches use to describe their efforts to address poverty and human rights, is a "code word" for communism and Nazism.
Uh... whut?? I swear, American politics is weird. I mean, he's a comedian right? No one here in the US really takes him seriously, right?

I am afraid some people do, the same ones who want Sara Palin for President.
I think Beck keeps getting more and more out there. He seems to need medication of some sort. :)

I was not sure where to post this story. When I found it on one of the many blogs I read, I had to take a double take. Unfortunatley, I can't offer any humor in this story, just another moment of "Is this really America?"

Road rage, accident centers on Obama bumper sticker
Posted: Mar 25, 2010 9:38 PM PDT
Harry Weisiger is charged with felony reckless endangerment.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Nashville man says he and his 10-year-old daughter were victims of road rage Thursday afternoon, all because of a political bumper sticker on his car.
Mark Duren told News 2 the incident happened around 4:30p.m., while he was driving on Blair Boulevard, not far from Belmont University.
He said Harry Weisiger gave him the bird and rammed into his vehicle, after noticing an Obama-Biden sticker on his car bumper.
Duren had just picked up his 10-year-old daughter from school and had her in the car with him.
"He pointed at the back of my car," Duren said, "the bumper, flipped me off, one finger salute."
But it didn't end there.
Duren told News 2 that Weisiger honked his horn at him for awhile, as Duren stopped at a stop sign.
Once he started driving again, down Blair Boulevard, towards his home, he said, "I looked in the rear view mirror again, and this same SUV was speeding, flying up behind me, bumped me."
Duren said he applied his brake and the SUV smashed into the back of his car.
He then put his car in park to take care of the accident, but Weisiger started pushing the car using his SUV.
Duren said, "He pushed my car up towards the sidewalk, almost onto the sidewalk."
Police say Harry Weisiger is charged with felony reckless endangerment in the incident.

What a sad situation that someone has so much hatred inside them that they will take it out on perfect strangers, especially a child.

And this is exactly why I took all of my stickers off my vehicles! Well, I did after the gang rape and kidknapping of the butch in Richmond, CA as on the very same night, I was struck with a large bolt thrown from a car on the freeway near an off-ramp from Richmond. It appears that the jerks that threw it at me (and broke my driver's side window) are friends with the 4 suspects in this case! They were fleeing the scene of the abduction as their friends were taking that woman!!! They saw my Gay Rights are Civil Rights sticker as they rode my bumper! Then drove up to my side and threw the bolt. At first, I had no idea if they were pulling a gun or not. I called 911 on my cell and did have the plate numbers. No more bumper stickers for me!
Actually, as a butch, I won't use BART at night alone anymore as I have to ride the Richmond routes and have had more than one incident of being subjected to anti-gay/lesbian hate on those lines. Although, I do drive to the Berkeley stations and take it from there at times and just drive home. This in the Queer mecca of California!!!

Wow, that's 10 minutes from my work and this county is primarily Democrat. Scary stuff if these things are happening here, I am so frightened at what will happen in less progressive place.
I don't have stickers on my car, I like a clean looking car and I have found one gets stopped mnore if one has stickers.

I use to love bumper stickers and I had several on my car at any given time until the last few years. But now, I would not have them on my car. I sense a ill wind and I am not sure which way it is going to shift...
