I wanted to start a thread where educators can share ideas, tell stories, network, share current educational trends, share how the GLTB lifestyle impacts your career and/or your career impacts your lifestyle...

I am completing my 24th year as an educator. For at the first 15 yrs or so., I was terrified about how my lifestyle could impact my career negatively. In GA., we can't unionize - I know I would not get fired for being gay...another reason would be created. However, over the last 24 years, I have made myself indispensable and have gained a reputation for being one of the best in my field - Middle School Orchestra Teacher. I do not flaunt my lifestyle, but my colleagues and admin know. My students...well - its not in their face, but they either suspect or figure it out once they reflect years after leaving my class. I, to my knowledge, have never had any negative repercussions...

I taught at the Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for 10 years in the areas of Film Studies, Women's Studies, and LGBT Studies. I am happy to say I was out in the Department and in class. I have PhD in Modern Studies which include the previous areas. I was lucky in the fact that I could create my own courses and teach many of them with LGBT topics and perspective. My most challenging course dealt with being a Trans individual. It was especially personal because I was in the first steps of transitioning. (But that is another topic). UWM and Milwaukee in general is more open to LGBT people (than where I live now) and my time at the university reflects that. I do miss the university, Milwaukee and the people I met there both in class and outside it. :glasses:

A few colleagues got contracts Friday.... slow painful torture....

5 more with the kiddies, Road trip, 5 more with adults, Road trip!

Hard to believe I've been able to do what I love for 24 yrs. If it had not for having music in my life, I'm certain I wouldn't be here today! Thank God! I know I have been able to give that back to so many young people...

Last week, as part of teacher appreciation week, a few LA teachers had their students write about teachers who had made a difference in their life...I received several extremely sweet letters...pretty awesome from Middle School kids! :hangloose:

Bittersweet...tomorrow is the last day with students! But also, the last time I will see many...I so love my students...teaching them to love music...but more-so - making them laugh and look at life differently!

Next week - Packing up for renovations - including a NEW ROOM! - leadership retreat and saying bye to many colleagues who will reassigned

Having said that....so ready for the break!

Wow congratulations for making it to the end of another school year. Sounds like trying times in your county for jobs and the impact will be big on students next year. I hope the break is enjoyed to the hilt.

We are out on June 15th, last contract day. I go back 10 days later for summer school. I am teaching summer school for the first time in years. It has been a doozy of a financial meltdown year so it is necessary. I think I will enjoy it though. No crazy administrators to worry about. Just fun and learning with the kids.

A bit about me as an educator....

I am finishing up year 14 as a special education teacher. I've worked in many buildings and placements/types of classrooms. Taught in Oregon, Idaho and now New Hampshire. I adore teaching unique learners. I enjoy the variety of places I have been. It is amazing to reflect on how I've grown professionally.

I have to say this year is one of the bottom 3. What should be an easier job (low caseload numbers, tons of resources, well behaved kids) is harder do to lack of clarity and inefficiency. However, this job may be the push I need to move on out of the classroom.

I understand....while you may have small classes - the pressure of moving those kids forward is tremendous...then the meetings, interventions, paperwork, legalities....an extremely hard job!
I'm at a point that I can't leave....if they go to 25 year retirement....I'm outta here....and not because of the children! Love my classroom!

On another note...our district is in the news...some dumb ass sniper pointing a rifle at a bus....psst...superintendent is not on the bus - leave the children alone!

LOL about the superintendent not being on the bus.... if I had a nickle for every time I would have thrown on of the Powers That Be under a bus I could retire!

I used to feel the pressure when taught to get kids to perform, be all legal, intervene. However, small town NH is apparently not so into legalities and thinks that NCLB is just well not so serious. For some strange reason I thought NH as more "enlightened" and it really is like walking into classrooms from 1975. Weird.

As you know...NCLB is being fazed out....but look at the time and money wasted on the bureaucratic ideals given to us by Washington - by politicians who have never been in the trenches! GGGRRR!
We will still have indicators of progress - schools the that exceed - meet or don't meet...but judged on more than attendance and test scores.
The new initiative - seeing commercials now - is what's called in GA - Core Curriculum...National Standards to make all states equal...but once again - they are attempting to level the playing field when you just can't compare apples to oranges...the good part of this initiative appears to be that it will focus on the basics, reteaching concepts, much more emphasis on early childhood and elementary, giving teachers a little more flexibility (as opposed to scripts and drop dead bench marks), etc.
Also, in GA, education is moving toward a more corporate structure and attitude...and when you're working with young people and their minds and brains - its just not a corporation!
http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r555/bkisbutchenuff/education.jpg
We will see...I figure between now and when I retire, I will see at least one more cure all - fix for our educational system....

This is mostly my opinion...thoughts and other opinions are VERY welcome and Wanted!

Congrats BK on another year survived and no fatalities! Have a fabulous summer break!

I used to wonder how I was going to teach an entire career with out any fatalities. I know know it isn't the kids one should worry about but the grown ups ;) .

We are in the last few weeks of school and it gets frantic. I am looking forward to summer and teaching summer school. I do hope next year brings administrative changes, new leadership or even some leadership skills to the current leadership.

Oh I hear ya! We go back August 20th or something. I refuse to look at the start date for a few more days.

That is a lot of changes coming up! I wish you peace and luck in handling them. I am sure in 24 years you have learned a thing or two about when to roll with the changes and when to step up to the plate and lead. Do you have a personal goal for 2012/13? Among all the changes do you have a plan for self care?

I am still working summer school. Which is a blast, I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it. I thought I was past the needing to work summer school years. And it is so much better than school year school! Since we are a special program we make our own rules. First we do our academics then out social skills. It is a blast. The kids have so much fun. I am grateful I get to see them like this. No meetings with teachers about what they can't do and how they aren't conforming. They just shine and grow and it is amazing to witness. I definitely needed this experience.

I am sincerely hoping 2012/2013 will be my last year teaching as I do now. I need to prepare for what I want to do next and it is time to move on. Going back to school, relearning about teaching or moving in a different direction. No matter what, it is time.

The school/district I am currently at is perfect for teaching me to let go and take the risk to move on. I am going to work at keeping that perspective so I don't get too full of myself and miss the lessons I can learn from where I am at. Sincerely I work with some wonderful professionals and some very unwonderful ones.

The principal made a statement this week that sent me reeling and wanting to resign immediately. It just triggered me personally, ethically and I really had to talk myself down. It was said in passing, not at work, and was a personal belief of the principal. I am sure she thought nothing of it (which is one of the scarier parts of it). And I thought too much of it. I don't want to work with a person like that.

A couple more weeks before I return. I took the summer off. Much needed. I already feel refreshed and determined to keep up self-care during the school year. That is such a challenge.

I am looking forward to my new job. I can't say much about it online for reasons I won't go into. But it's ideal in many ways. Less stress, but still interesting.

I feel for anyone with a bad administrator. People who pontificate about education have no idea what that is like. Thank god for our unions.

Yes...sadly just a few more weeks...I plan to live it up while I can....Hopefully one more trip South.

Even though Administrators come and go, they can do great harm in a very short amount of time if they are incompetent!

The general public had NO idea what we go through to educate today's children....and finally...

I have this week off. Yahoo. I am not sleeping in this morning because... I don't know, sob!

I am going to be working on my attitude right up until I park the car in the parking lot (Mon Aug 20th for in service week). I know I can get back some of the magic and love for the profession. I just gotta keep looking.

Today I will give in to the excitement of school supply shopping with The General, new 1st grader. I KNOW that will help my attitude.

Thank you so much BK... The General KNOWS how to have a good time shopping. So it will be fun!

You are right it is the outside BS. I ended the year last year thinking to myself... in the 2012/13 school year... I will not engage.... In the petty BS, back stabbing and running around in fear of "crazy eyes" vice principal who is out to get us. That seems overly dramatic... and it is! and still it is true.

However, I know how the system at the school I work at now. So I can begin my year focused on the kids, avoid the drama, and stay on target to grow professionally.

I am blessed with a fabulous kid and gy! I am very lucky.

I've always loved my job so it is odd to have this "not really growing/learning" phase. I am rereading a book for some inspiration. The Passionate Teacher. It is dated (1995) but I am hoping to refocus on what am I passionate about in public education. So far I've been reminded that passionate teachers are focused. I'll be reading slowly...

Okay so I am working hard at gearing up for back to school. I think I am starting year 14 of teaching. I need some mixing it up. I have a serious love of school supplies... So I was mentally making my ultimate personal school supply list.

1. Sharp ticonderoga pencils, and lots of 'em. I don't like pencil top erasers so when there is no more eraser there is no more pencil.

2. Quality, quiet and fast pencil sharpener... this is an absolute must for the lover of sharp pencils. And sometimes sharpening pencils is my daily moment of zen.

3. 2 pocket folders with out the 3 hole punch strip in the center. I like my folders in a rainbow of solid colors and no frills!

3. Kleenex.

4. 3 sizes of ziploc bags: snack, sandwich and gallon. I've got things to organize.

5. Rainbow collection of fine tip sharpies. I am just like the colors.

6. Colored paper clips... the shear number of papers I shuffle and copies I make for various levels of CYA folders means I abhor staples. And a little flair makes me smile while I deforest the Amazon.

7. Markers. Especially red and green. I like to give dots where to start and stop on work sometimes.

8. Highlighters. Not for highlighting my professional reading but because the kids think they are soooo freaking cool. Give a kindergarten student a highlighter and suddenly you are a star!

9. post its... Nothing is permanent in education! And rarely do things make it to my long term memory!

10. Water bottle. Gotta flush the germs

11. dry erase crayons. These are new and I am gonna give them a try.

12. Velcro.

13. Card stock. Sometimes I like things to last longer than regular paper, and I need to use it before I can laminate it. Maybe I'll never have time to laminate it. Let's be honest here.

14. Binders in a nice color or navy blue with the clear pockets to label. I've got a thing for binders... Meeting notes, data, schedule. I like to have 1 one inch binder that is with me at all times.

15. traveling hanging file box...I'll take my data to go please!

By Tuesday, I will have had seven full days of meetings at six different locations. Blah. Tired and losing steam, and I haven't done a lick of work to actually prepare to do my job.

We listened to an executive from a major -- MAJOR -- tech company talk to us today. She had NOTHING new to say except that tech needs prepared grads. No shit.

The free pastries don't even make me feel better anymore. I never thought I'd turn my nose up at an apricot danish.

One funny funny awesome thing was that they got an eighth grader who looked more like a 10 year old get up and give us a pep talk. The kid was ON FIRE. I mean amazing. Sweet, funny, real, and just so good at public speaking. We all wanted to adopt him.

I saw my classroom. Pretty much a pit. Starting from scratch again. Whine.

Oh and I don't care how nice they are in real life and how much better they are than the asshole at the other school, all administrators suck. They are so cavalier about the things that matter to you. Re a much needed printer so that we won't have to disturb another class to pick up our printing, she says, "OH, I think D was going to order that. He said he was. But I think he forgot." No phone service -- again we have to interrupt another class. No computers yet. No passwords for the web application to create IEPs. No keys ordered. Re the fact that there are NO translators for Special Education (for IEP's), she is just like, oh well. There are only two for the entire -- large -- district. Yes, we put kids first. Sigh. I was so enthusiastic until the endless days of meetings beat me down and until I saw what it looks like on the ground. What gets me about this administrator is that she used to be a Sped teacher. What happens to them when they get that degree and move into Administration? Body snatched or something.

And our union is sooo in love with administration. I have never been anywhere like that. Today was my first day with veteran teachers, and . . . oh well, it's just like anyplace else. You have to fight to be able to do your job. Any other profession, your bosses understand it's their job to give you the tools and the information you need to perform.

I remember once asking a principal for a teacher's edition of a textbook. His response: "Good luck with that."

Well...I'm just tired. What a long day...I need to do some paperwork...but don't think I can tonight. Five minutes before open House, which we had to have in the Gym (because of construction), we were told - by the way - you will have no access to your rooms tomorrow (because of construction)...Really???? So now I have to work Sat. GGRRR! Tomorrow, we are getting bussed to a forced pep rally...followed by a whole afternoon of mandated meetings....

Wish I could say I feel better from venting...but I don't really...

:seeingstars:

District Rah-Rah events are one of my least favorites of all time! I love how you said forced pep. Luckily with testing, new common core and racing there is less pep more fire and brimstone. Oh wait that isn't any better.

Wish I was closer to you to help out with room set up. Saturday work sucks!:goodluck:

My gift has been early childhood education. I love it dearly. However, at 50 years old, I wish I had gone to college for the older grades. You all are very blessed!!

Have a wonderful school year!!

Bless you for teaching the wee ones. I don't know about older. I have 1st/2nd graders this coming year. Older= bigger boogers. :)

By Tuesday, I will have had seven full days of meetings at six different locations. Blah. Tired and losing steam, and I haven't done a lick of work to actually prepare to do my job.
By far one of the worst things about prep days, the lack of prep!

We listened to an executive from a major -- MAJOR -- tech company talk to us today. She had NOTHING new to say except that tech needs prepared grads. No shit. Why am I not shocked? I've yet to listen to a business person say something not redundant or self serving when talking to teachers.

The free pastries don't even make me feel better anymore. I never thought I'd turn my nose up at an apricot danish. LMAO! probably no actual fruit in it!

One funny funny awesome thing was that they got an eighth grader who looked more like a 10 year old get up and give us a pep talk. The kid was ON FIRE. I mean amazing. Sweet, funny, real, and just so good at public speaking. We all wanted to adopt him. And finally inspiration for why you are really there.

I saw my classroom. Pretty much a pit. Starting from scratch again. Whine. Rebuild the temple.

Mandatory Administrative Lobotomy may explain it. And you know there is no reason for late paperwork right? Yes you can kick me...

Thank you for the preview of my week next week.
Today I had lunch with 2 coworkers. We discussed our plans for regular support meetings. Whatever it takes to keep our focus on the kids.

And so it begins...sleepless nights...mind boggling tasks...making it happen with nothing....

I must say....not being dramatic - but, 25 yrs. and I have never started not knowing what I will be doing when I go in Monday....

Also - shouldn't have to go in on a Sat. - yet - but due to construction and lack of leadership...yep - I will be there for 3 or 4 hrs at least today....

I did finally get some help moving stuff yesterday until we were kicked out...

As of yesterday afternoon when we were booted out of the building, no Internet or intercom system...not sure how that will fly Monday...

At our forced pep rally...not so bad - though I couldn't get past seeing $ signs and waste of money after positions being cut, programs slashed, budgets taken, furlough days, no raise in 4 yrs. - the Superintendent speaks at the end....100 people may have clapped out of 6000. Hello!!!! Then he actually made a remark about paying us - moans and groans from the audience....he actually turns from the mic and laughs....He's looking for a buyout!

3 new administrators....not a pretty sight!

besides that...I promise to not bitch and moan .... In my room - I will make unbelievable music with my kids! That - you can count on!

BK I am so glad you got to work some in your room. Saturday work is nuts. Unless you like doing it then I suppose it isn't.

I've been amazed by the music teachers I've worked with in the past. What they come up with and how they get the kids to make music together is amazing. I can only imagine what your dedication has created over 25 years. I know you are talking about creating something out of nothing in the wider context. And once the music starts you'll know you are coaching, prodding, guiding lots of someones to make some music!

All the budget cuts, pay cuts, day cuts, position cuts gets so frustrating and disheartening. Especially when sitting in a district rah, rah. I think if you want to work us like dogs then let us in our rooms to work!

Peace BK! :praying:

Hi BK,

Not to get all weird so early in the morning but I thought a bit about the situation you described.

When kids make random threats to teachers it can really change the mood of the classroom. For everyone. And that isn't cool. It can be hard with muttered words to address and know if it is serious. Stoney is better at this. Hy works with teenagers. One of the things I've learned from hym is consistency... Follow the rules, implement the rules despite how other staff might change them for kids. It makes things difficult for staff following the rules yet it teaches the kid a lot. It takes time to sort out and it is worth it. Even without having a hairy fit, being calm and consistent and reporting the problem, Stoney's approach allowed the kid to work through and realize different rules with different people are frustrating and confusing. And other staff realized the need for consistency for the kids sake.

I've been through "threat assessments" with kids who in frustration said during state testing that is it they were going to blow up the building. Now there was really no "threat" reality but district policy was district policy and we worked on how to express frustration for that student more than we were (it was a big lacking skill for him).

Did I feel like I needed to run to the SRO immediately...no...Did I feel like I had to be careful on my way home...no...this student prolly had no homeys....but the second day? Because I ask you to stay seated...that shocked me more than his statement really...I 've endured worse threats...come to find out - he shouldn't have been at school anyway...his mom was arrested for doing the same thing last year on campus...so in the end - if it brought attention to this student and his needs and or at school safety/policy...then so be it...we have bigger fish to fry for sure...

Anyway, I finally got to see my new space and start actually working on Tuesday. God it's only been three days, Tues, Wed and Thurs. Amazing the amount of work one gets done, but it's never enough.

One kid got me to actually slow down and listen to him. That's my job actually, so I am glad I did. And also so grateful that he allowed me to temporarily stop the whirlwind of activity that has been these three days.

I also teach robotics, and

This year, I'll be teaching Digital Electronics (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_electronics).

The training was intense, and

I expect that I will be challenged.

My contract year starts Mon, Aug 27 but

I have already been at school several days.

I did not know that Chancie... looked like intense training. A challenge is good! Do you enjoy teaching in Mass? I'm new out east and find I struggle to fit in as a teacher in NH. Oddly enough I am going to try out some of the "methodology" they seem to like so much and see if it works for the kids. We'll see how it goes.

I also am looking to stay away from the usual drama. It doesn't serve the kids and causes my alcohol budget to bloom out of control. Which then affects the health care budget and so on it goes. Luckily several co workers I usually debrief with are also on the more positive and directly confront problems with open mindedness and possible solutions train this year as well. That should help oodles.

My contract starts Tuesday the 21st. Should be fun. I've been in for other trainings and independent work in my newly assigned space. I am anxious to get back in and getting my self organized further. I don't mind putting in extra time at the beginning. Once we officially start I'll be meeting with the sped team and then with classroom teachers about the kids in their classes and won't have a second to spare preparing for the students.

Last year was such chaos for me as a newbie to the building that I really don't want a repeat. The vice principal promises more clear communication this year. She is pretty earnest about it.

It sounds great. I actually like exploring things for the first time WITH the students. They are generally patient and help a lot. However, I've never worked on projects like this. Wow. It is so cool that you are bringing this to your school and students.

I hope you take the first break, whenever it is, and actually get some relaxing in.

So today is our annual special education department day. Last year we had 2 days. I am grateful this year we are more efficient (unlikely but let's go with it). We lost our day with our school team day, thank goodness. I was telling Stoney the story of how I met the special ed team at the school I work at last year. My goodness I forgot how odd that was.

I was brand spanking new to the school last year. New to the east coast and very nervous about "social norms" in NH. Every thing seemed so difficult. Getting to work was a challenge and I was going in for the first time and I needed to be on time. I get there, find a seat which was tricky because well I was obviously the new kid.

I ended up sitting next to the occupational therapist for preschool, K and 1st grade. She ends up being a lifesaver to me last year and a wildly adored friend now. At that moment she was a stranger who seemed a bit bristly. We open with an ice breaker the vice principal has planned. We are supposed to answer a question and be ready to share our partners answer with the group. The question was....

What was one of your most difficult moments in life and why?

I am sitting next to a stranger thinking to myself... What life moment that was difficult is appropriate to share at work with someone I don't know? And of all the ice breaker questions my god what was this woman thinking. I did learn why the woman I was sitting next too was a bit bristly, her father recently died. I don't even remember what I said.

So today I am thinking that how ever long this day will be I am not answering that questions again and having my answer shared with a group of strangers. Thank heavens.

The thugs have been no problem - as they really don't want to draw attention to themsleves...not good for their groups...its the many attention seeking wannabe's that are the problems...Still moving forward toward my plan....

BK your story reminds me of one of the reasons for moving to NH. I put up with the small towns, -isms of people that are very isolated (they are everywhere though, just more outspoken in the town I work in), grocery stores that close at like 7pm on Sunday, bugs, humidity (although compared to other places it isn't that bad), crappy winters for....

My daughter entering elementary school that has music, art, pe, technology, library as specials and a class size of like 20. We were leaving class sizes of 30 and music once a week and pe once a week and no art, tech or library.

For myself I was leaving a case load of 40 for a case load of 16.

It is nice when they take the time to listen! I also finally got to sit down with my Principal...she listened, saw my frustration and Got the picture (I hope). I told her - If I don't get some help -I will not make it through the year at this rate...It's not even Labor Day and I go in exhausted everyday...
Being caged in a room for 75 minutes with 60 students and no resources wears you down...Differentiated Instruction x's 9. On my left - Adv. Orchestra students, in the middle - Inter. Orchestra students and on my right - 25 General Music Students....within each group - students who do not, do and exceed standards as well as special needs...no technology, no books for GM, and no instruments for gen. music....I get one group engaged, the other side goes bonkers...I get everyone one engaged, actually try to instruct - turn my back and something goes flying across the room...did I mention - not enuff chairs for bout 20 -25 per class...(2classes like this)

The best part is I do have approx. 60 beginners on 6th grade who actually signed up for the class...
I also told her that under the current conditions - no one was getting served or justice...she was my evaluator 2 yrs. prior to getting the Pricipalship...she knows that is not acceptable for me...

At our last team meeting I mentioned this to my colleagues, saying I wish the schools would fundraise for raincoats or umbrellas. One of my colleagues (American, elementary school teacher) laughed at me saying that some of them don't even have pencils. Well, if the kids aren't in school, doesn't matter if they have pencils or not.

Today is the first day for students at the school I work at and my daughters school. I was up before my alarm clock this morning and oh so tired last night.

Both schools had back to school activities where students could meet their teachers yesterday. Both schools are title one schools. The one that is in the small town is where I teach. The General's school is in a medium sized town (pretty big for NH). The differences were amazing.

I think of where I work right now as in a time warp. As another teacher friend of mine described it... The town is an isolated town in NH by choice. Back to school activities happened from 2-3pm and loaded the families up with papers. The diversity is limited to economic diversity. The kids largely have new clothes for schools start, brought mountains of supplies (because what the teachers wanted was too much to fit in backpacks tomorrow) and took home mountains of form to fill out. The families spent their time in the classroom talking to the teachers.

Where my daughter attends school our neighborhood school is seen as the more lower SES school. Back to school included popsicles and was from 3-4:30 (thank goodness from the bottom of my working mom heart). The diversity is economic and racial/ethnic. The families and kids congregated on the playground talking to each other long after they visited the classrooms. No one brought in there supplies since the teachers asked for like 4 small items. The classrooms are clean but not overly cutesy. I am grateful for The General's school. It has it's challenges and it seems real.

We didn't talk her new teacher's ear off, it is my personal preference to let her get to know The General on her own a bit. I will send a coaching guide via email today or tomorrow. The General got to see her kindergarten teacher. Oh that was the best.

Today is the first day for students at the school I work at and my daughters school. I was up before my alarm clock this morning and oh so tired last night.

We didn't talk her new teacher's ear off, it is my personal preference to let her get to know The General on her own a bit. I will send a coaching guide via email today or tomorrow. The General got to see her kindergarten teacher. Oh that was the best.

How was the first day for both of yous? :pirate-steer:

How was the first day for both of yous? :pirate-steer:

The General had a great day.

I had a day that reminded me why I prefer children to grown ups! With 16-20 kids in a class you'd think a couple of the teachers could gripe less. Sigh. Just get to know each other for one day. We can chase their "need to grow in" areas tomorrow. Oh and I can not be in 6 class rooms at the same time to support math in class. Folks are going to have to submit to pull out or deal with once a week support. Both options will go over like lead balloons. :seeingstars:

I was happy to read both of your posts.

I hope some other teachers will share their experiences too.

Today was my first day with ninth graders.

I planned a nice hands on activity

And I learned a lot about where my students are at.

Don't worry. We administer plenty of norm referenced tests, but

For me, nothing beats checking in while we work.

Seniors start tomorrow, and

Because of a whole series of beaurocratic snafus,

I don't know who will be in my robotics class.

Agreed! Checking in while we work or real time assessment is so wonderful.

I've been an educator for over 12 years and I have a hard time saying that because I am really just a nurse and not a teacher. I teach adult-ed at a local community college and I run the largest nurse-aide training program in the state of ct community college system.

Because I am not trained to teach and I only hold a bachelor's degree in nursing I feel overshadowed by the professional teachers and profs around me.

Taking this into consideration, my outness in the community college system is mostly insidious. Of course I am out to my collegues and to the community at large. The big reveal is always when my lecture style turns personal. Because nursing encompasses all things social and family, there always comes a time when my status as a woman married to a "woman" comes into play. I start half a dozen of my own classes each year and I oversee another 18+...and every time that first casual discussion comes up I hold my breath and hope my class doesn't leave for a bathroom break and not come back.

My internalized fear is always unfounded and I've always had nothing but support. The only awkward issue is that almost always there is a person who must "come out" to me and tell me about their gay/les/bi experience. This is usually a married person who must tell me of their one drunken same-sex experience and I never know how to respond to that. The openly GLBT people in my class never need to share with me, but there are the outlyers that I cannot peg. Does this ever happen to any of you?

I had a "where is the wine" day today. A very anxious mom projected a lot of anxiety into me. She wasn't angry. Anyway, whew. My eye was practically twitching when she left. It's amazing how much anxiety people can transfer onto others.

What a week...some better - but still a mess. I guess the difference between last week and this week - self resolution....I will do what I can, with what I have, as I can....everyone is now aware of the ridiculous conditions - still no chairs, Gen. music resources and MINIMUM playing time for the orchestra students, etc. .... I'm at 188 students yesterday - but growing. My admin. has made it clear that all they want is me to hold the fort down and see what happens as a result of the Super.'s resignation....
Yesterday - we lost 4 more teachers including one who is a bff of mine. She was promoted to a county facilitator and the others were placed in different schools...the man (a-hole) who created all this resigns...I was so happy to hear that and have felt it was coming...Now - if our board will not spend millions doing a search and choose someone locally who has a vested interest in our district and what's truly best for the students - we may actually salvage something good this year....either way - I still have my plan....

I survived the first week!

I have two ninth grade classes and one senior class.

On the alternating weeks, I have three tenth grade classes.

A lot of those kids have been stopping by to say 'hey', and

That feels really good.

Everything has gone smoothly except for some glitches with ordering materials.

I did have to order 20 practice solder kits with my own credit card, but

I know I will get reimbursed.

I have a three day weekend and Pete didn't have to work today.

I sat in a cafe to get some grading done while my faithful Pete shopped at the coop.

Right now, I am really happy to be the teacher I am.

Yesterday I was able to name a quirk about a co worker that is driving me nuts. It is such a simple thing to name this quirk and I think my ability to respond to it appropriately will save us both quite a bit of misunderstanding.

The thing she does is try to get help with her workload (which I am happy to consider doing and we've talked about it) by not asking but telling. She says, "I was just thinking you would...." or "It only makes sense if you do...." and "I just can't do this and since you are there too..." And since she is very literal if I say "okay... let's talk about that" or "that might work" she considers the matter settled.

Now I know to set a time to think and come back to it explicitly. Or even better I can say something that highlights her asking. I am not sure how to do that. I just know that a couple of us are starting to get irritated and we are keeping positive this year.

It takes me time to get used to following a schedule.

Three or four have working circuit boards.

I can see the delight in their faces and

I was doing well on at work this week. Until Friday. :| I know is it too much to ask to have 4 days in a row go well? looks like it. The vice principal who is working hard on "clearly defining" this year jacked a few of us around Friday. If she had just had a conversation with myself and the others she would have found we all had it covered. But flying off the handle is her MO and now the rest of us suffer.

My co worker (and favorite person there) is pretty sure that when she goes out on maternity leave in December she isn't coming back.

I think the clincher for me was the chair scratching the floor issue. A student has an adapted chair that goes everywhere for stability and positioning. When moved it scratches the wax. The solution of felt pads was too simple and now it must be moved with a wagon. Which the staff person must now juggle pulling the chair in the wagon and a mostly stable but wandering child.

See the hierarchy of concern... shiny floors then children

Yaw. It is so.

This week a student was put into my program who has no chance of benefiting from it. It's just another opportunity for him to fail. It's just that there is no place else for him. I said to the administrator something like, You all aren't under the illusion that this is going to work, are you? And she said no. At least she was honest.

Their position is rational in a way. There IS no place else to put him. Still, it's fucked up.

Just this week, Azril Mohd Amin, the vice president of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Malaysia said that LGBT rights should be "excluded from a human rights declaration currently being drafted by Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)," LGBT website Gay Star News reports.

...

"Malaysian and those who are against LGBT rights are thereby protecting the human race from the secular fallacy, perpetrated by the United Nations, that human beings may do as they please, within their so-called "sovereign borders" (as laid down by the European powers)," he wrote, according to Gay Star News.

The symptoms listed for women look like women being community based and isn't outward affection toward men bad anyway when they are children?

However asinine the symptoms listed are the bigger issue is the impact on how children are treated at home, school and in their families.

Yes, and it's really common in Asia to spend time with other women, including sleeping together in the same room. It's culturally appropriate behaviour for goodness sake!

Last year there was a camp for "sissy" boys to toughen them up and make them less likely to become gay. :(

Very busy day. Reaped some benefits of hard work the last few weeks, but also felt on the edge already re energy. :( It's the arthritis. Sigh.

Anyway, the student who was, IMO, misplaced in my program already got dropped from it. The admin found an excuse. I think she heard me or just has some good sense. I know it sounds cold blooded, but it wasn't going to help the kid. He'd just fail. Now it's back on the parent and the Program Specialist to find him a real placement if one exists.

Sad really, but I am relieved.

OH, and I found out one of my students is genuinely hungry. Sigh. I can help, but damn. WTF? Why does this happen in America, and why did it take me this long to see the signs? He practically had to tell me.

That the teacher had a plan for the class community (she did and she rocks). We met as a team (without the vice principal) made a plan. FINALLY my local Board of Education primary school English person is going to do something about one of my teachers not coming to the party ... I guess Ministry of Education + key performance indicators did the trick. Plus, my zone manager said he'd visit the school next week. Never mind that I bought this issue up a month or so ago.

I spoke to one of my teachers yesterday, she hadn't heard of the latest craziness from the government/MOE about how to identify if a child is gay/lesbian (obviously transgender doesn't exist) - the telltale signs are fondness of tight, v-necked teeshirts and handbags = gay and fondness for female company = lesbian. Neverfuckingmind that girls/women spending time with each other is culturally appropriate for most of Asia! ARSEHATS!!!! But, at least this teacher (Muslim) rolled her eyes and said "aren't there more important things to worry about" and "they want girls to be spending all their time with boys is it?" She's a pretty cool teacher actually and have spent some time out of school with her.

And onwards ... today is Friday, classes won't start on time because of morning prayers in the "standard" public schools - never mind children and staff who aren't Muslim.

I had a good day too. I worked one on one with a student -- for two hours. We did Algebra -- I got confused and we both figured it out. We did U.S. History, and we worked on a collage. He has insisted that he is not creative, but he associated two ideas -- the idea of a coming apocalypse (his idea for the collage) and the idea of a clock (time is running out). And then he used a motif of clocks on the collage. Simple stuff, but he didn't think he had it in him. Math is his strong suit. I had to read the history to him, but he got the concepts immediately. Anyway, it was fun.

It's good to see some of the kids doing more each week -- and hating it less too. School has been a miserable experience for most of my students. All it has meant is feeling stupid and getting in trouble.

Anyway, unfortunately, I am going to fly across the country to visit my parents for that week. I want to spend time with them, but I also do not want to travel. Killer layovers, time difference, etc. I will not be rested when I return.

Today was a good one and a rough one. A student I worked with will be out on a medical leave so to speak. Trying to get the family to get him into the doctors for evaluations. Lots of self injury. It is sad that he is tormented. Praying for follow through and information. A great kid, lots of potential and tricky to sort out. Happens with our kiddos sometimes.

So....getting new schedules this week...splitting the large afternoon classes so Orchestra and General Music will be separate...however, combining 6th grade which will mean 71 beginners in one class...unheard of...with no assistance!
Wow - what a year and its only the end of September!!!

Not a happy camper. Still.

Went to a work dinner tonight but it was mostly managers since only one colleague turned up. The project manager pulled me aside afterwards and told me that at a state board of education meeting, there were complaints still being made about me. I'm "too forceful". The project manager wants me to "soften" my personality. To be "nicer". To just, in general, change my personality.

This complaint goes quite nicely with the only earlier this year, that I "show my face".

Maybe I should forget about doing my Master's and be a backpacker bum around Asia.

Forgot to add, one of my teachers sent me a text message around 5pm saying that she and her two colleagues won't be at school tomorrow. Meaning that the workshop can't be held at her school. Teachers go home at 2.30pm but she couldn't text me then or even earlier.

Good news re discipline in our district. I just heard that they are going to jettison the zero tolerance policy.

Halleluja!

I think I posted this before. The ACLU talking points on the school to prison pipeline. It's old but, unfortunately, it still describes what is happening. http://www.aclu.org/racial-justice/school-prison-pipeline-talking-points

Did anyone see the PBS show last night called Dropout Nation. I haven't yet. It's online now. I am a little afraid to. I heard an excerpt on the radio, and it sounded too obvious to be interesting.

Having been a teacher in so-called drop out factories for five of my seven years of teaching in California, I am kind of sensitive on the subject.

Found out from one of my teachers, that the teacher who sent me an sms yesterday went ahead and informed the other teachers that there probably won't be a workshop today because she and her colleagues will be absent.

Hello?! I think that's MY job.

And, I emailed the Project Manager today and asked to swap schools for next year. There's a vacancy and it shouldn't make any difference to the new person since my schools are in the same general area - well, my schools are a bit more north. He had better bloody say yes.

I am glad the zero tolerance policy is going away! I liked the talking points memo from the ACLU that you posted.

Funny for me, I work in a zero tolerance school, that doesn't really do consequences. And that drives me crazy. Both parts. Have policy, don't follow it. What? Well I should ammend that to say follow it only if the student is poor or non white. grrr!

I teach ninth graders and seniors one week, and tenth graders on the alternating weeks, and this upcoming week I teach two sections of tenth grade geometry and one section of a pre-engineering class.

Even though my young and excited/excitable colleagues chose a new geometry book, that class is very easy for me to teach, but the pre-engineering class is a challenge every day.

I've never taught the class before and I am barely one day ahead of the kids, and possibly one day behind a geeky kid or two.

We finally got the laptops we need, with the software installed, and we have most of the supplies we need to start designing and building circuits.

I am demonstrating several new skills and new technologies this week, and (most of) the kids will love it, and it's pretty exciting.

I always tell the kids, if you never try anything you don't already know how to do, you will never learn anything new, and I guess that's true for me too.

Well, the good news, sort of, is that I'll have a different batch of schools next year. Closer to where I live but I'll have to deal with local traffic rather than highway traffic (not my idea of a good time). Plus, teacher from these schools warned that I was a "spy" for the state board of education officer for primary school English. :|

Oh yeah, and I have to go halves on a new phone to replace the one that I lent to my colleague (an American elementary school teacher) and she returned in shit condition without the battery recharger.

Well I've been checking progress on the students I work with. They are sailing along! Making gains. One more data point and the graphs will be fun to show them. Even with 2 data points they are going to start to make sense of them. The progress monitoring makes so much sense to them once they can see the graphs. We've been using example graphs to share the idea... but as 2nd graders they relate better to their own. I love this part of being a special education teacher. Talking about their brains, their strategies, their strengths and how to ask questions for their learning.

I also spent an hour with the unified arts teachers (music, art, library, pe, technology) updating them on students I case manage and accommodations. I do believe they left with a better appreciation of the students as people. They seemed to have a handle on what works for them and individual students in there classes. I heard lots of ideas from them about the kids. Now that was awesome!

But, I think I have to seriously consider if working in Asia is the place for me and my personality. I also think that that considering is probably long overdue. And, I wonder if this kind of teaching is really what I'm good at ...

So many things to think about. And to think, when I was in high school I thought that maybe I'd become a kindergarten teacher because I wasn't smart enough for anything else - yeah that's often the prevailing attitude about kindergarten teaching unfortunately.

I teach in a community homeschool group one day a week. Such a difference. I've gotten my teaching degree and dabbled in a few private and public schools. I don't know how y'all do it. One private school I was in was wonderful, kind of a three room school house for kids 5-18 years old, separated by learning style. That was about 15 years ago and the school closed down about 10 years ago for various reasons.
Now I have a group of 25 kids, aged 3-17. I teach health, nutrition, and cooking with them. Love it.

Not too shabby a day today. Did three observations. The first one, well could have been a lot better, but at least he doesn't get defensive and blame the kids for his teaching inadequacies.

Went on to my Chinese school and the Head of English ROCKED her lesson! Was damn fabulous especially because she had surgery for appendicitis only a few weeks ago. She did a language arts lesson based on the Hare and the Tortoise and what was even lovelier for mepersonally, is that later she said that although this is a lesson she taught last year, she got some additional ideas from me. :tea:

Quite nice after being told last week that the teachers haven't learnt anything from me. Quite frankly I think the local educational officer for Primary School English is playing games. A couple of weeks ago she said at a state meeting, WITH my boss in attendance that my teachers find me forceful. Funnily enough she was talking about comments made at the beginning of this year by teachers at one school still (insert adjective of choice) about how they felt last year.

I like talking to parents and I welcome their input if there's something they think I should know about their child. In one way, I am very lucky because I have really fun toys for interesting classes, but it does make for huge cleanup. Once in a while there are parents who pretend they can't see the other ten people in the room. We are supposed to have a sign up sheet for them to ask a counselor to call them and make an appointment for a longer meeting. I like Open House though.

I totally agree with the second guy's comment about undergraduate science education. I used to teach English -- as a TA -- at Michigan, and the freshman Chemistry and Physics classes were not about teaching to mastery, but about paring down the number of students who would someday apply to medical school and to graduate school in the sciences. Students who really wanted to learn Chemistry would take those classes at community colleges and transfer the credits. People blame the public schools because our students aren't prepared, but they can pass community college science classes, which cover much of the same material. A final in a Michigan Chemistry class typically has questions on material not even covered in the class. That's fine at MIT or Caltech, but that's absurd at Michigan, whose students, it's fair to assume, are there to learn things they don't already know.

And Michigan students are already privileged. They have had decent public or private school educations. So what happens when you bring kids in from other backgrounds? They don't make it, at least not as science majors. A friend of mine has a BA and MSW from Michigan and has had a good career as a social worker. However, he started Michigan hoping to become a doctor. The freshman math and science classes ended that dream. It made no sense. Bright guy, hard working, but from Flint public schools. He could not compete. Lots of universities teach lots of remedial classes now, but in my opinion, if they taught their freshman and sophomore classes well, the students would not need that much remediation. A hardworking student who is literate and has passed Algebra II should be able to pass a freshman Chemistry class. Freshman and sophomore science courses are abysmally taught, and a lot of folks in the sciences seem almost proud of that.

And if they are still counting on secondary education to make up for their failure, then they better move fast and start doing something about the end of course exams that are being instituted in so many states. Teaching to those tests will kill any teacher's ability to inspire students.

Re the visa issue and science in the U.S., totally true.

She arrived 40 minutes early, a full half an hour before anyone else showed up. So for a half an hour, she directed all her craziness at me. It wasn't abusive, or I would have shut it down. Congratulations on making it this far! Sometimes there really is no rhyme or reason to how and when we get those "years" professionally. You know the shake your head and wonder just how fucked up can it really get and are there any competent administrators out there feeling.... :seeingstars:

I hope you survive BK. It would be a great sadness and loss if you didn't.

Open House went pretty well. I teach in a small rural community, and it's a very social event. The kids who are active in clubs like FFA wear their jackets and the kids in Culinary make cookies. It's very sweet.

Tons of kids in electronics and robotics dragged in their families to show off their work and to meet me. There was one group of families of ninth graders who expected a presentation, which I had not prepared. Mostly I chatted with parents.

One mother of a ninth grader, anxious to skip the non existent presentation, merely introduced herself. Her family lives across the road from Pete's mother, so I said, Hi, I am across the road neighbor's daughter's partner, and she was a little flummoxed, and I regret identifying myself beyond, Hi, nice to meet you.

I moved for this job. The job is working out so far. Except for a higher proportion of loopy parents, I am enjoying the lower stress environment. I still work closely with students, but. . . aieee. It's hard to explain without kind of saying what I do. But I no longer have classroom management issues. I work with students one on one or in very small groups. Although one day I was teaching math to two students who kept interrupting me and thought OMG I have totally lost my skillz in just a couple of months. I can't even teach two students together. Not true. But lol.

Anyway, all I do now is encourage and motivate. I rarely have to kick butt. One neighboring teacher had a kid using the f-bomb one day and I couldn't resist and nearly threw him out. It turned out someone had stolen his bike AND his dog had just died. That's why the teacher was letting it go. Plus the kid was ED. I didn't know. I completely silenced the poor kid. I felt bad after the teacher explained. Anyway . . .

I moved. That's my point. And I am not reaching out and meeting people. Weight gain and arthritis make me not want to. Hell, I don't even hang with my nice roommates so much. Back home, I would probably also be isolating, but not this much.

ANd it's begun to be a problem. The job is great -- as jobs in education go -- but it's not my life. That's one reason I got the job, so I would have energy at the end of the day. But I am not overwhelmed by the beauty of the area I am in. (I sacrificed that.) And I am not near the friends I hang out with no matter how creaky and grumpy I am. So I have to take action. On my health and I just have to start making time for others.

It's not going to be fun. I am way past being able to walk for exercise. So I have to swim. Anyway, there are lots of "have to's" and I am kind of daunted. But I can't be a good teacher or a good anything if I am in pain and isolated. And I am letting that happen.

It sucks that you're having such a hard time at school BK. But, you know you're good at what you do and the kids who want to learn from you do. Administrators can't take away the positive impact you have as a teacher.

Heya fellow teachers!

Venting Warning Ahead:

I've got way too much to do before midterm reports are due next week! I have far too much marking, and then entering marks, and then typing in the comments! (btw, what program do people use for marks/grades--we have this one called Markbook)

It's cold and rainy and I am a real suck right now. I just don't feel like being ON and talking to anyone. Sigh.

In other news, I posted a pic in the galleries of me outside my classroom. :)

School was closed Monday, and then I was out sick for two days. I still felt crappy this morning but I couldn't bear leaving the kids with a sub again, so I went in. I felt so punky by the end of the day, I almost cried, and I lost my temper with a wounded kid with limited social and emotional skills. I apologized to my class, and they were like, God, that's nothing, Miss Chancie, but I felt terrible, inside and out. I know it's just because I'm sick but I feel like I can't catch up, like I'll never finish grading, that I won't have time to call the parents of kids who aren't doing well. I still haven't ordered any of the supplies I need for my two hands on classes and I've been laying out my own money all year and I haven't filled out the form to get reimbursed. Ugh, I feel awful.

Saturday morning and not waking up to an alarm. There's nothing like it. Sunday is not as lovely because there is the spectre of grading and getting ready for the week. But Saturday morning . . . mmm.

Last week was tough. I had a big IEP and prepped for another that got cancelled. I had to wrangle with the new psych who is dealing with overdue tris that were dumped on us. I have two IEPs next week. Then there is the daily stuff. The nurse came by to see one of my students who has a baby (and to vision and hearing test someone else's student.) My student did not show up, so the nurse called her using my phone. Their convo was painful to hear. The nurse was not supportive. She just sounded like a white outsider prying into my student's business. I could hear the student hesitating to tell her stuff. The nurse had to ask five or six questions before the student fessed up that the baby daddy is in prison. Yuck. Plus the nurse was just generally rude to us during her visit.

We had a sub for one of the teachers in our suite who apparently is on the verboten list, but the teacher who called him didn't know. He is 82 and told the students all about his prostate. A staff person came over without making an appt to train me on CAHSEE administration, which I don't need, and my principal would not get off the phone, so both were talking at the same time. A school one of my students is being moved to wants me to test him before he goes. My principal says no. And so on.

This is the shit I hate. Just let me just teach.

Today it's Saturday, and my roommates are off at some trans weekend having a wonderful time. So I have quiet and peace and I woke up to no alarm.

I too love Saturday mornings, although I'm working some volunteer stuff. Our year has been compounded in complexity because our management system went to a web based format. They promised it would be intuitive. In application it has been far from. Trying to keep up staff morale. My diagnosticians are struggling.

Wow ....yesterday - pretty close to being awesome....even with the testing schedule and 2 different meetings....I have to remind myself - we lost 9 weeks....we are where we would be in late Aug./early Sept.
6th Grade -Applying fingers...doing lots more than open strings....just moving slow with 60....some things I just can't overlook - whether I am with them next year or somewhere else...General Music Thugs - did well also...no posturing or power struggles...both 7th and 8th grade classes went through all their music...today - first after school rehearsal - I know its going to be a little rough, but at least we will all see what we need to do in a month...

I am thankful I have been given the gifts of tenacity, patience (paper thin this year) and preserverance...

I made an appointment with my counselor ... what I have this year is not going to change....how I deal with it MUST change. Unfortunately I can't get in until the first of Dec.

Happy Hump Day Educators!

I spent more than two hours helping a kid get services he needs. It's beyond the kind of case management I am supposed to do. It replaced teaching and caused me to miss a staff meeting. I am not supposed to be doing this. My principal knows this and is behind me. The kid is grateful. The outcome was a necessary first step. But I did not sign on for this.

I did not agree to take a job with half of my caseload being ED kids. I did not agree to case manage ED kids who are in crisis. I do not know HOW. Working with in-crisis kids who are not getting basic services is scary. They should not be getting ME to do this. They need professionals. It's not an ED program, except that it is.

It also takes me back to a job I had where one of my constant problems was seriously disturbed kids not getting services. None. In that job, I got no support (except from the equally desperate psych) from Special Ed or Administration. Here I have support from admin though SPED is so far doing little.

I am not sure. I like this job. But this is NOT what I am good at, and it makes my life chaotic. I missed my meeting.

This on a day when I woke up at 4:30am to write an IEP. I am grateful my admin is behind me. If she weren't, I would be beginning to worry about my new job.
