View Full Version : Should he have outed himself?

Luke is the latest contestant of Big Brother UK. After telling the audience he didn't intend to out himself to the housemates, he started telling people on the first day*! Hubby is disappointed as he wanted the world to see Luke as a man, not a transman. I figure he went in there wanting to tell people and be able to contribute to trans visibility, which is something I respect.

I'm not asking 'Should we be entitled to tell Luke how to live his life?', I'm asking 'What are your thoughts on transmen in the media and how would you have liked a situation like this to play out?'

Luke. (http://www.unrealitytv.co.uk/big-brother/big-brother-2012-luke-anderson-tells-sara-mclean-and-lydia-louisa-hes-transexual/)

*the girl he outed himself to is hot, which probably explains his indiscretion.

Apparently a guy in Argentina (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/transgendernews/message/58122) went in purely for trans visibility and it paid off (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/05/argentina-gender-identity-law-takes-effect_n_1570830.html).

He's cute (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RCssaO_cPEg)too.

They're all in a tizz this year as they NOT ONLY have Luke, they also have a closeted gay guy, a bisexual ex porn star who used to be a teacher*, an ex playboy bunny and a posh girl! Woo hoo!

*I was like 'WHERE do all these porn star teachers come from????' which astonished my hubbie as, of course, I've been in the sex industry AND I've been a teacher. It must require similar skills or something...

I'm a huge BB fan but have only seen the American version. I watched some of the clips of Luke telling his housemates. I'm not sure how it will effect his chances in the game. I think it would have probably been better to wait. If this is the first week of BB, the houseguests usually vote out anyone that stands out in some way. Since they don't know each other well they tend to focus on what is said and anything that makes a HG stand out. There is little to no plotting and planning in the first week and its rare that any alliances have been formed so that first week or two, guests that usually lay low can get through the first vote. The only thing that Luke 'should' do is to do what feels right for him. Assuming that's what he did, then I believe he did the right thing.

It gets betterrrrr... not. This was said by one of the commentators (a former housemate herself I believe) about Luke's decision to out himself - "Any longer and it would have looked like oh you are covering up, you are turning into a bit of a liar, he handled it brilliantly - everyone was so supportive!"

Er, sorry... wot??

Whatever he feels comfortable. A transman is still a man.

i may be facing this same dilema soon.
i am going to audition for the voice, and if i get on the show, i need to decide how i want it to come out......

i have no illusions that it will come out, as it would take very little checking around on the "producer's assitstants" to find out.
you have to list know aliases for the background checks, so there will be questions......
i would just like to have some say on how it comes out. i would imagine since the "blind auditions" are about just the voice, it would not come out until after that........

if i come out on the live shows, i should cover this song that week..............

I don't think you're going to be able to hit some of those notes, dear chefhmboyrd. I will not be there to do that, um, thing to make you hit those high notes. :winky:

Was the "rehearsal disclaimer speech" you gave me a sort of warning you may be trying to hit those notes anyway?

i would actually be singing in another key, but yes.. the warning was not for the notes that i do hit.....
it is for the ones that i may miss that will surely hurt your ears.........

Luke A is unhappy as he two favourite people are up for nomination, this blog (http://forum.transgenderzone.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3040&sid=d9bd3f4411cdb4713e3c96d76a1f3087)kinda covers his experience in the house.

Something has finally happened that has pissed me off in the show. There is a boy in the show. Tall, covered in tattoo's, full of male privilege, comes across as really arrogant, and Luke doesn't like him. Why doesn't luke like him? Well according to the Big Brother audience it's because Luke 'Wants to be him' and 'Because he was born a woman'. It's still the idea that a transman is somehow inferior and is naturally 'looking up to' the almighty cisgendered man, when we all know that transmen are usually far more mature and knowledgeable than any cisgendered boy of the same age.

And THAT is why it's hard for me to watch reality shows that are primarily for the hetero audience (that include LGBTQ peeps). Trans or gay folks are usually put there for "shock value" and ratings rather then a genuine interest in understanding us. Programs that center around LGBTQ lives/struggles/etc. are easier for me to watch because I don't usually have to worry about my blood pressure rising due to preconcieved notions from people who have no clue what the hell they're talking about.

I dunno if I'm more mature or knowledgeable but I do know what it's like to have preconcieved notions attached to me merely for how I look. I've learned to ignore it for the most part but shows that do shit like above tend to send me into a grumbling state of agitation. Lol.

Transivisisbility is a hard one whether it is in a real public arena or everyday life.

I'm currently in a new situation where literally only one other person that I sees knows for sure and I don't see him very often. Others may or may not have a clue because they have seen my drivers license and my birth name.

In fact someone somewhere addressed the name issue, which has so far been my work experience wherever I go. either the name or pronouns will be off, I don't say anything but somewhere it's corrected. The person I checked in with here was using she and my birth name and the next time I saw her she addressed me as Koop.

With that said it's not this constant "who do I tell" nor "when do I tell" nor "do I tell" but the thoughts do go through my head.

Back in Los Angeles and most of my life I"m openly trans. I don't wave a flag but a lot of people know and it's not something I could hide if I wanted to. So it's weird to be put in a situation where people don't know.

Ulitmately I want to be seen as the man that I am however I'm not sure if I want to be seen as only that. Because I believe my upbringing and history is what has made me the man I am. To hide that, feels in a way like hiding me. I've done enough hiding in my life.

Yay, Luke A is trending on twitter! Benedict got evicted from the house and fingered Luke to win, so now all of Luke's latent fans are popping up. It probably helps that he's a nice guy in a house of posers. This has made me feel better about everything.

Something happened tonight on UK Big Brother which utterly shocked me and the hubby. He got up and walked out of the room. Twitter and Facebook exploded with anger, and the spin off Big Brother show were forced to cut their viewer calls short. A male housemate was utterly disgusting (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xrrf22_conor-and-channel-5-bully-housemate-deana_shortfilms) towards a female contestant who had upset him. Luke A wasn't involved.

I'm actually really upset. It reminded me that these are real people really saying these things :shocking:
