GENERATION JOBLESS delves into why so many young Canadians are overeducated and underemployed. The reality is that today's twenty-something's are entering an economy in the throes of a seismic shift where globalization and technology are transforming the workplace. Automation is replacing tens of thousands of jobs at a time. Companies fixated on the bottom line are outsourcing jobs and wherever possible getting computers to do the work. Employers are placing a higher premium on experienced workers, unwilling to invest in training new entrants to the workforce. So, young people are caught in a catch 22. How do you get experience if no one will hire you without it? Many are working for free as unpaid interns, just to try and get their foot in the door. And, for the first time in history youth are facing another unique challenge – competition with their parents' generation for the small pool of jobs that do exist. Boomers who are delaying retirement.

By all accounts the problem is only going to get worse. Especially since the key players in Canada –universities, employers and governments – are not working together to find a solution. Canada is the only country in the world without a national body responsible for education and is seen as one of the most decentralized and fragmented countries in the world when it comes to helping young people make a smooth entry into the world of work.

Several experts weigh in on what many are calling the most important social issue of our time – including Francis Fong, TD Bank Economist and author of the report The Plight of Younger Workers that paints a bleak picture of youth employment in Canada; Armine Yalnizyan Sr. Economist, Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives who has been tracking trends in the labour market for two decades; and Dr. Paul Cappon, former head of the Canadian Council on Learning a research and advocacy program focused on learning in Canada;

The documentary takes viewers to Switzerland where the youth unemployment rate is 2.8% - the lowest in the developed world. Here the idea of young people graduating with degrees and unable to find jobs is virtually unheard of. Dr. Stefan Wolter, Director of the Coordination Centre For Research In Education, explains how all levels of government, educators and employers, work together to ensure that education and training are linked to employment.

Great documentary that I watched last night on HBO:

"Rolling Stone: Stories From the Edge chronicles the last 50 years of American music, politics and popular culture through the perspective of a magazine that understood rock ‘n’ roll was more than music — it was a cultural force that helped shape America and defined generations."

It really bummed me out to find out that Jann Wenner and his son Gus have put it up for sale. Due to the internet and people not reading newspapers or magazine hard copies much anymore, sales have plummeted.

They previously had sold 49% but had retained controlling interest.

Nat King Cole: Afraid of the Dark (2014)

Imagine what it would feel like to be the only black television star in Hollywood at a time when the Ku Klux Klan acted out violently against black people, when America groaned under the weight of segregation and prejudice. Imagine being in possession of a natural talent so great, so unique and disarming that these issues were seemingly swept to one side to allow you to perform and be acknowledged for this gift, yet behind closed doors they were trying to think of a way to package you as something you were not: white. This candid account of the actual happenings in and around the "fairytale" life of fame and fortune of Nat King Cole, are taken from the private journals of Nat King Cole and exclusive interviews with the widow of Nat King Cole, Maria Cole, as well as contributions from other family members.

Here lately I have been studying Russian history. In order to better understand world happenings and the impact history has had on our national and international dynamics, my focus has been on the Russian Revolution of 1917-18 and the overthrow of the last Tsar and European autocracy.

There are, quite literally, dozens of great documentaries on YouTube regarding not only the Revolution, but also the lives of the family and executions/murders of the last of the Romanov dynasty. I would heartily recommend these to anyone who, like me, is curious about Russian culture and politics.

I`m not sure how accessible world wide these documentaries are, most have been aired on BBC channels but they are definitely worth a look if you are able. I will give you a warning many are not for the faint hearted so please check out the subject topics to avoid triggers. Stacey is an investigative journalist, 31 years old, fresh faced and slight built who is by no means afraid to question and challenge people on their activities and beliefs often to a level where you can be quite afraid for her, she is quite fearless. She champions women and children's causes around the world covering subjects such as former women captives fighting ISIS, child sexual exploitation in Japan and disappearances of indigenous women in Canada. Powerful, informative and thought provoking. Highly recommended.

On the Documentary Channel, I just finished watching BOMBSHELL: The Hedy Lamarr Story (2017). - Produced by Susan Sarandon. This most beautiful woman was a Hollywood star. However, it is entirely unknown that this woman also "invented" and "patented" something called "frequency hopping" for which she never got a cent!!!!!! Now worth approx. $30 billion (if I remember correctly, I hope, lol) and integrated into all cell phones, wi-fi, GPS, and Bluetooth, it was originally "stolen" (back in 1955) and used in bombers during the Vietnam war and earlier... absolutely amazing and fascinating story of her life - how the Hollywood sexist machine looked at her only as a sex object - so sad.

There is a trailer, but here I have decided on a YouTube video that more accurately describes a synopsis of this documentary, called The Brilliant Mind, wherein NewsHour Weekend's Megan Thompson spoke to Alexandra Dean, director of the film:

I recently saw a Canadian documentary "Flying Solo", a CBC episode of Doc Zone on living alone, on the Documentary channel on TV.

There was a good statement made by one of the interviewees to the effect that one must make a distinction between living alone, being alone, and being lonely. Personally, I love the feeling of being alone and the psychological freedom it gives me, which doesn't imply that I would not consider being in a relationship.

A documary /movie of the most famous Olympic photo in Mexico Olympic games 1968.
The question "who was the white guy","did he support it?"
Peter Normon was an Australian athlete, and yes he was part of the protest.
that protest, destroyed peters life here in Australia,he was shunned by the whole white racist country, and went virtually unknown for years.

At the Sydney Olympics, the commitee, asked Normon, would he retract his involvement in the political protest, supporting the civil rights movement. If so they would restore his achiements and let him participatein the Olympics

Peter stood by his princples and said NO

I found this story interesting,so much I bought and framed the iconic picture.

The Wrecking Crew (Netflix) is an amazing documentary about a group of unassuming studio musicians to whom singers and recording superstar artists from the 60's, 70's and 80's always turned when they wanted perfection.
The songs they played on ranged from a bunch of bubble-gum pop songs to, "These Boots Were Made for Walking," and Brian Wilson's masterpiece, "Good Vibrations."
Their combined virtuosity was stunning, especially bass player Carol Kaye--a woman who looked like a middle-aged housewife.
Considering how many Number One songs by heavy metal and psychedelic band recording sessions they sat in for, they all seemed like regular, establishment types who looked more like they were more into office bowling leagues than Billboard's Top Ten.

I had a headache for two weeks after I saw that movie!

RE: Your comment on the documentary viewed by Girl_On_Fire -- the one about Outfoxed: Rupert Murdock's War On Journalism inspired me to look into this particular documentary, WheatToast.

One of the things that came to mind, while watching it for about twenty minutes (it was hard to watch, especially after the repeated aural assault via the phrase -- "Somebody says" --- or something like that), was an idea concerning (the...when, where, why, how, etc.!) the rise of Fact-Checking in journalism or other media outlets.

I found a couple of interesting leads via one published scholarly article and one major political news magazine (TIME). I'll leave both of links to articles here, in case you or anyone else might be interested in reading about the Rise of Fact-Checking in journalism.

A) An PDF scholarly article published by The American Press Institute:

Fact Checking Polarized Politics: Does The Fact Checking Industry Provide Consistent Guidance On Disputed Realities? (https://www.americanpressinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Marietta-Barker-Bowser-2015-Forum.pdf) (Marletta, M., Barker, D.C., Browser, T. in The Forum, Volume 13, Issue 4, 2015, pp. 577-596)

B) From TIME magazine (2017):

Here's How The Fact Checkers Did Their Job Before The Internet (http://time.com/4858683/fact-checking-history/) (Fabrey, M., August 24th, 2017, Time Magazine).

I thought both articles about Fact-Checking were very interesting. And, I have to agree with you about your head-ache from watching that documentary. I didn't exactly sleep in today, due to watching just a portion of that documentary last night. I'll sleep in on another Sunday... :balloon:

How I really like Judi Dench, and I will always remember her performance as Lady Macbeth in the Trevor Nunn's direction of that film (the most brilliant - I think - adaptation of that play, which had me absolutely glued to the screen). And now there is this really beautiful documentary of her sharing her love of trees. Personally, there has never been a tree that I didn't love. You know, I can't say that about people. ;) How, when younger, there was nothing in the world that could stop me from climbing trees, smelling the healing scent of pine... I saw this documentary (JUDI DENCH: My Passion for Trees, BBC 2017) on TV on the Knowledge network. Judi Dench is the most wonderful lady, sharing her passion for trees, her woodland garden, as well as her passion for Shakespeare, and is absolutely delightful in this doc.

JC is my favorite stand up comedian (of all time). Lot's of comedian's have his TV show to thank for their own comedic standup careers (Jerry Seinfeld, David Letterman, Jay Leno, Ray Romano, Ellen DeGeneres, Gary Shandling, etc) because that's how they were made famous, practically overnight.

JC was a liberal, politically. I personally loved how he took politicians of the day, years ago, to task. When I watch his old shows on YouTube, I often wonder what he'd say or do or how he'd roast politics today.

I know Carl Sagan's TV show, The Cosmos, is not exactly a documentary, but in my mind, Sagan was no ordinary scientist and his ability to teach about scientific subjects remains of great interest to many, including myself. I like to watch anything I can find on the web, which features Carl Sagan.

I do love National Geographic documentaries. The history and evolution of humans and animals. Documentaries that go around the world exploring how different races of people live and function in their daily lives. How different animal species survive and flourish. I really like documentaries on the human brain and how we do not know much about its real capabilities. How different addictions of drugs, alcohol, gambling, and food are affected by our brain and our living situations.

And here is the accompanying article at the NYTimes:

Dying in Your Mother’s Arms

A palliative care doctor on finding a “good death” for children in the worst situations.

If losing a child to an illness is one of the worst things that can happen to a family, Dr. Nadia Tremonti has made it her mission to make it better.

It’s not easy. But as a pediatric palliative care physician, she works to ensure that terminally ill children receive quality end-of-life care. Palliative care is sometimes misunderstood to shorten life expectancy, but it’s a method that increases quality of life, improves symptom burden and decreases medical costs. We follow Dr. Tremonti in the short documentary above as she works to make death less medical and more human. In the process she asks a critical question: When a child is terminally ill, how can we make the end of life a better one?

I have no words for how much respect and admiration I have for this woman. She is every little girls role model and every woman's mentor. She is brilliant, beautiful, strong and filled with a wisdom only a life of storied experience can give you. This documentary about her life and her accomplishments, experience both personal and professional, and everything inbetween is just gorgeous. It's also heart breaking, devastating and frightening. I literally cheered at certain moments watching it and cried during others. It's so well made and I can't recommend it enough. #ImStillWithHer

I found this documentary fairly interesting.

There is an elderly woman who lives down the road from my sister-in-law. Her husband died a few years ago, but we've noticed that she has a compulsive disorder and that she is a hoarder (example: her house is stuffed with so much stuff that she lives in her car, and her car too is stuffed as full as her house). It's truly sad. We made an inquiry on her behalf, with a local social worker who works with the elderly. She's probably not ever going to be healed of her secretive shopping and hoarding disorder, but I came across this the other night and watched it, hoping to better understand the condition (obsessive/compulsive disorders).

This is off-topic and a reply to no one but Mulberry trees are assholes.

Just a lil PSA

carry on

History of the BLF "builders Labourers federation" NSW" in the 70's

this union introduced not only green bans to save parks and beautiful old buildings but alsi introduced pink bans on developement at a university where a gay man was sacked for being gay.
They refused to continue work on the site until he was reinstated.
their legacy of what was saved is still evident to this day.

306 Hollywood (2018)

When two siblings undertake an archaeological excavation of their late grandmother's house, they embark on a magical-realist journey in search of what life remains in the objects we leave behind.

I really can't claim this is my favorite documentary as its not been released yet nor have i saw it but I do love the concept!

The "going through" possessions of the dearly departed always creeps me out a bit! When I "go" I don't want anyone digging through my stuff or god forbid fighting over it! Perhaps that is why I have always and will always remain a minimalist!

I've got to do research and see if this was ever released and if so, where I can catch it!

Watched My Beautiful Stutter on Kanopy.com through ROKU last night. It’s a documentary about a two week camp for children who stutter. It was wonderful to see some of these children meet and bond with others like themselves for the first time, have groups of people listening to them, feeling understood and accepted. Very powerful.
