Fake Online Locksmiths May Be Out to Pick Your Pocket, Too

Maybe this has happened to you.

Locked out of your car or home, you pull out your phone and type “locksmith” into Google. Up pops a list of names, the most promising of which appear beneath the paid ads, in space reserved for local service companies.

You might assume that the search engine’s algorithm has instantly sifted through the possibilities and presented those that are near you and that have earned good customer reviews. Some listings will certainly fit that description. But odds are good that your results include locksmiths that are not locksmiths at all.

They are call centers — often out of state, sometimes in a different country — that use a high-tech ruse to trick Google into presenting them as physical stores in your neighborhood. These operations, known as lead generators, or lead gens for short, keep a group of poorly trained subcontractors on call. After your details are forwarded, usually via text, one of those subcontractors jumps in a car and heads to your vehicle or home. That is when the trouble starts.

The goal of lead gens is to wrest as much money as possible from every customer, according to lawsuits. The typical approach is for a phone representative to offer an estimate in the range of $35 to $90. On site, the subcontractor demands three or four times that sum, often claiming that the work was more complicated than expected. Most consumers simply blanch and pay up, in part because they are eager to get into their homes or cars.

“It was very late, and it was very cold,” said Anna Pietro, recalling an evening last January when she called Allen Emergency, the nearest locksmith to her home in a Dallas suburb, according to a Google Maps search on her iPhone. “This guy shows up and says he needs to drill my door lock, which will cost $350, about seven times the estimate I’d been given on the phone. And he demanded cash.”

The phone number at Allen Emergency is now disconnected.

It is a classic bait-and-switch. And it has quietly become an epidemic in America, among the fastest-growing sources of consumer complaints, according to the Consumer Federation of America.

Yesterday, Twitter exploded over news that a white, British actor named Joseph Fiennes (little bro of actor Ralph Fiennes) had been cast to play Michael Jackson in a film about a fictitious post-9/11 road trip he takes from New York to Los Angeles with Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor.

Now, Fiennes has addressed the backlash and says he's surprised by it, considering the film is a fantastical farce to start with. He also offered the worst reason ever for why he's qualified to play the King of Pop.

“I’m a white, middle-class guy from London,” the 45-year-old actor told Entertainment Tonight about being cast in the role. “I’m as shocked as you may be.” He continues, “[Jackson] definitely had an issue — a pigmentation issue — and that’s something I do believe. He was probably closer to my color than his original color.”

I don't even know where to start with this one, it's sooo wrong on so many level. WTF!!!!!!! :|

Kale: The Silent Killer.

From the web site Delish (16/07/5) titled "People Are Getting Seriously Sick from Eating Kale" subtitled ("Find out why this superfood is actually super-poisoning) that urged readers to "lay off the kale...":

"Kale is heralded for its ample supplies of calcium, magnesium, potassium, Vitamin K, and various healthful phytochemicals and anti-oxidants. But the superfood is hiding a nasty secret: dangerous levels of heavy metals.

In a recent study, molecular biologist Ernie Hubbard found that kale—along with cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and collard greens—is a hyper-accumulator of heavy metals like thallium and cesium. What's more, traces of nickel, lead, cadmium, aluminum, and arsenic are also common in greens, and this contamination affected both organic and standard produce samples."

The articles cited a 7 July 2015 article published by Craftmanship magazine; written by Todd Oppenheimer:

"Oppenheimer profiled the work of microbiologist Ernie Hubbard, whom, he explained, has a "background in biochemistry and genetics and "[worked to] explore a range of tests and treatments not often found in traditional doctor’s offices" such as "bio-impedence' analyzers that measure cellular energy and 'chelating' formulas like ZNatural, which aim to stimulate the body to release toxins...."

The article explained how Hubbard settled upon kale as a possible agent of dietary destruction:

To test this link [to residual thallium levels in kale as a toxin], Hubbard started playing a little game. Whenever the clinic would send him someone with the kind of chronic problems associated with thallium, or any other complaints that were hard to pin down, Hubbard would scribble kale on a little note-card and turn it face-down on his desk. After a short work-up, he’d ask the patient to list his or her favorite vegetables. Over and over, people would mention the crucifers, especially kale. Hubbard would nod, say he expected as much, then show them the note-card on his desk to prove it..."

I'd put my tongue in my cheek but there's a wad of kale in there.

The CIA and the Pentagon Are Shooting at Each Other

Not so very long ago, Dick Cheney announced with his bare face hanging out that the vice president's office was not part of the executive branch of the federal government. He coughed up this preposterous hairball because he didn't want to give his official papers to the National Archive, as is required by several federal laws.

On that blissfully innocent June day in 2007, I believed that we as a nation had summited the Mount Everest of assholery, planted Cheney's flag in a gritty crust of snow and watched as that bloody banner fluttered in the air-starved breeze.

This was the nadir, the final insult, the single silliest bark I've heard from a high public official since "If the president does it, it's not illegal" and "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?" It had to be, right? The vice president, who sits one missed heartbeat away from the big round room, isn't part of the executive branch? Also, clouds aren't part of the sky, water isn't wet and bears don't poop in the piney woods.

Such was my age of innocence. I believed with my whole heart that the arc of ridiculous had kissed the very ceiling of the sky. I was comprehensively wrong.

You may want to sit down for this one. Here be some foolishness of such raw and ponderous weight that it might cave in the solar system entirely. Ready? Here goes: There are currently two militias duking it out in Syria, in the shaved and shattered death zone between Aleppo, Marea and the Turkish border, and the US government is funding them both simultaneously.

The Knights of Righteousness (yeah, seriously, that's their name) recently got their asses kicked up between their shoulder blades by the Syrian Democratic Forces, who at least have the decency to try not to sound like a band of Marvel Comics superheroes. Nothing new here on the surface; Syria is an abattoir the world will be dealing with for several generations to come.

No, here's the fun part: The Knights of Righteousness (yeah, that really is what they call themselves) have been armed and funded by -- wait for it -- the Central Intelligence Agency. Their opponents, the Syrian Democratic Forces, have been armed and funded by the Pentagon. Ergo, based upon the most recent battle in Marea, the Defense Department went to war with the CIA half a world away.

Once upon a time, during the "good old days" of the Cold War, we fought proxy wars against the Soviet Union and their allies. Now, we fight proxy wars between various departments of our own federal government, using your tax dollars to buy the bullets and the bombs. Thunder has more sense. Newborn kittens are more clever. Stones at least have the wisdom to sit still.

This? This reeks of the most prolonged and expensive blunder in the modern history of the North American continent, and that's one hell of a statement. Even after 25 years of war in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, we weren't giving weapons to our people so they could shoot our people. After another 25 years of war in Iraq, that's exactly where we are. The "news" media enjoys soft-shoeing this elaborate disaster as some kind of organic phenomenon, another chapter in the ongoing ersatz biopic of Us. vs. Them. The truth? They did this for money, and most of the bodies biting the dirt over there fall at the hands of American weapons we abandoned or sold outright because a small group of people you'll never meet were handsomely paid for the privilege.

In the face of all this, of the lethal blowback that includes bombings in Brussels and Pakistan and again in Iraq, where is the rudder of our national discourse steering us? The New York Times tells the gruesome tale: "Donald J. Trump and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas traded insults on Easter Sunday morning over recent smears against their wives, while Mr. Trump ruled out creating internment camps for American Muslims and said he would study a proposal to allow delegates to bring guns to the Republican National Convention."

Ow. My brain.

It was once wisely said that some people create their own storms and then get upset when it rains. That adequately describes US foreign policy and politics today, but for the plain fact that they are pleased and not at all dismayed by this current and ongoing turn of events. The rain, in this case, is cash by the bushel followed by fearful fodder fobbed off to frighten enough people so these "leaders" can inject themselves into elected office with the cold compliance of the media. It is a frictionless machine lubricated with innocent blood.

The CIA and the "Defense" Department are shooting at each other in Syria. Maybe they'll wipe each other out, and the Pentagon along with the CIA's George H.W. Bush headquarters can be transformed into affordable housing for all the people who have been subjected to the cruelty of this nation's seemingly bottomless talent for self-destructive folly. That would be fitting indeed.

How would anyone know where to start? It demonstrates such bad judgement, on the part of everyone involved with the film. Why? Why? Why? A white man to play Michael Jackson? Fiennes is a great actor but that is irrelevant here. He is going to play a black man's experience??

It makes me feel embarrased as a white woman.

There are not enough talented black men or biracial men available to play the role? Really?

WTF indeed.

I can't wait to hear the explanation that the producers/director/money people will offer about the choice of a white man in the role of Michael Jackson.

Town & Country magazine apologized to Monica Lewinsky on Thursday, over uninviting her to an event after former president Bill Clinton decided to attend.

"We apologize to Ms. Lewinsky and regret the way the situation was handled," the magazine tweeted Thursday morning.

OF course they regret the way it was handled because no one stopped to think of the power social media draws these days!

Former New Jersey governor and 2016 Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie joined The Late Show With Stephen Colbert live following the second Democratic presidential debate on Thursday, and he did not hold back in sharing his feelings about one of the debate’s hour-two moderators, Meet the Press host, Chuck Todd. It was evident that Christie’s words were spoken with true disdain and not in good fun.

Especially female's hair. A simple trim is waaay more expensive than a male's. And she has long hair, which cost more to do anything with, be it cut, color or style. I bet the cost would come down real fast if men were charged the same.

When I was young and had long hair I paid around 125 dollars once. That did include more than just a haircut, however that same work today would probably cost what she spent if she went to a salon, if not more. True she doesn't have to go to a salon but then think about it, none of us really have to go anywhere to get our hair cut. Just stick a bowl on our head, trim around it and there you go. The cost of some scissors and the bowl to set you up for the rest of your life. Well depending on how young, how clumsy you are, you might have to replace the scissors, or get a new bowl if you drop and break it, didn't think to use a plastic one. My mother has a pair of scissors passed down from her grandmother that she used to sew my oldest son clothes, wedding dresses, many things for numerous women, all sorts of stuff. They were well used by the time my mother got them, well used after. If things are well made and you take care of them you don't have to replace them all the time. Like you have to do with a lot of the cheap crap that's brought in from other countries today. Stuff pretty much designed to fail so you have to keep buying more and more. Anyhow if we all just stuck with bowl cuts that would probably be the cheapest way to go, fair and square, for everyone.

When my hair was at its longest length and I was coloring it and getting it chemically straightened at the same time, that would cost me well over $200 each time.

So, we were having a lovely meal at a nice lakeside restaurant on the north shore last evening. I happened to glance over to my left at one point and noticed a woman (in her 70's) sitting next to an even older woman. The younger of the two made a knuckled fist and HIT the older woman in her face!

Oh My God! I could not believe what I was observing. Immediately, the younger woman reached over again and grabbed the older one roughly by the wrist and yanked! My dinner mates asked what was wrong (the expression on my face must have been one of horror.) I told them and a nearby server what had transpired. All she said was they would keep an eye on the situation.

This woman had absolutely no qualms being in a public place and abusing the older woman. She never glanced around to see if she was being watched. I wanted to make a big deal and call the police, but my companions talked me out of it and the wait staff assured me they were watching. BUT! the damage was already done. Right?

Questions linger this morning. Did the older woman live with the younger one? Are they related? Does the older one live in a nursing home?

I am imagining the torture that is happening when not in public. Sad and upset beyond words.

Doubtless, the price would come down if costs were applied universally. The real problem is that the trolls would mock her anyway. She's photographed a great deal and she often appears on television. She would be a fool to look less than perfect every day, and that does cost extra money. If her hair looked sub-par they would attack her with even greater zeal.

PS: I pay $200 to get my hair done. AOC's hair is much longer than mine, and no one is taking my picture these days.

5. Canceled a requirement for oil and gas companies to report methane emissions.

etc......lots more

In progress

20. Submitted notice of intent to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement. (The process of withdrawing cannot be completed until November 2020.)

15,000 mink died from coronavirus in U.S. since August; Denmark prepares for nationwide cull

More than 15,000 mink in the United States have died of the coronavirus since August, and authorities are keeping about a dozen farms under quarantine while they investigate the cases, state agriculture officials said.

Global health officials are eyeing the animals as a potential risk for people after Denmark last week embarked on a plan to eliminate all of its 17 million mink, saying a mutated coronavirus strain could move to humans and evade future COVID-19 vaccines.

The U.S. states of Utah, Wisconsin and Michigan – where the coronavirus has killed mink – said they do not plan to cull animals and are monitoring the situation in Denmark.

“We believe that quarantining affected mink farms in addition to implementing stringent biosecurity measures will succeed in controlling SARS-CoV-2 at these locations,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said on Tuesday.

The USDA said it is working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, state officials and the mink industry to test and monitor infected farms.

The U.S. has 359,850 mink bred to produce babies, known as kits, and produced 2.7 million pelts last year. Wisconsin is the largest mink-producing state, followed by Utah.

Sick mink in Wisconsin and Utah were exposed to people with probable or confirmed COVID-19 cases, the USDA said. In Michigan it is still unknown if the mink were infected by humans, according to the agency.

In Utah, the first U.S. state to confirm mink infections in August, about 10,700 mink have died on nine farms, said Dean Taylor, state veterinarian.

“On all nine, everything is still suggesting a one-way travel from people to the minks,” he said. Coronavirus testing has been done on mink that die and randomly on the affected farms, Dr. Taylor said. Like people, some mink are asymptomatic or mildly affected, he said.

The CDC said it was supporting states' investigations into sick mink, including testing of animals and people.

“These investigations will help us to learn more about the transmission dynamics between mink, other animals around the farms and people,” the CDC said. “Currently, there is no evidence that animals play a significant role in the spread of SARS-CoV-2 to people.”

Coronavirus is thought to have first jumped from animals to humans in China, possibly through bats or another animal at a food market in Wuhan, although many outstanding questions remain.

In Wisconsin, about 5,000 mink have died on two farms, state veterinarian Darlene Konkle said.

One farm is composting the dead mink to dispose of the carcasses without spreading the virus, Dr. Konkle said. Authorities are working with the second farm to determine how to dispose of the mink, and dead animals are being kept in a metal container in the meantime, she said.

“They are basically in a metal container, a roll-off type container, that is sealed off at this point,” Dr. Konkle said.

Michigan declined to disclose how many mink have died, citing privacy rules.

U.S. authorities are urging farmers to wear protective gear such as masks and gloves when handling mink to avoid infecting the animals.

State officials said they are working with the USDA to determine whether farmers can sell the pelts of infected mink. The pelts are used to make fur coats and other items.

OMG 15,000 mink have died from c. virus and 2.7 have been farmed for pelts and this is within months or a year. Other animals farmed are foxes, chinchillas, racoons for coats and other items. NONE of these animals are eaten. Wild animals are hunted by licenced hunters for coats etc. are bobcats, beaver, lynx, sables and weasels only beaver parts are eaten by some. My WTF is that the world at large complains about the hunting of seals (no whitecoats have been hunted for many many years). These animals are clothing as well but also food for a good few people of Eastern Canada and Northern Canada and the northern USA. Most complaints are from people who have never seen a live seal in the wild or eaten any. (I have, it is delicious). This hypocritical nonsense boils my blood. P.S. I have eaten beaver too and not fussy about it.

I believe the point of the article was to discuss animal / human virus transmission . The mink being a possible example in North America.

Also while it might be fine to eat seal meat, it's preferable not to eat corona virus riddled mink or seal.

No one here was being hypocritical.

It really isn’t all that uncommon for humans to kill, or cull, animals carrying diseases that are known to threaten humans. Last year in China roughly 150,000,000 pigs either died or were killed for carrying African swine flu. In 1992 mad cow disease in England resulted in over 4 million head of cattle being killed.

The mink in Denmark are just a new chapter and I believe I saw an article talking about North American mink farms in I think it was Oregon that are also slated to be culled.

It’s quite horrible and very much WTF, unfortunately it is what it is…

“If it’s not for animal welfare, if it’s not for the environment, if it’s not because it’s a failing business, surely a pandemic would inspire the political will to finally create space to have conversations about transitioning people out of this industry,”

" At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, all eyes were on China, where the country’s wet markets – which in some cases sold live animals in cramped cages and unhygienic conditions that served as potential breeding grounds for zoonotic diseases – were linked to the early transmission of the novel coronavirus.

Now the world’s gaze has turned to Denmark, where at least 12 people have contracted a particularly worrying mutated version of COVID-19 from mink, prompting the region to lock down and begin the cull of tens of millions of farmed mink and causing the U.K. to ban travel to and from the Scandinavian country. Mink are the only known animals capable of catching the virus from humans and spreading it back, and since the beginning of the pandemic, mink infected with the virus have also been found in the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Greece, and the United States.

But while our heads may shake at these foreign places, tut-tutting at these “others,” Canadians should be looking at the mink farms in our own backyard and recognize that real risk exists right here – a risk our government helps fund.

According to 2018 data from Statistics Canada, we are home to 98 mink farms. When asked if mink on Canadian farms are currently being tested for COVID-19, representatives from Nova Scotia, B.C. and Ontario replied that the focus is instead on upping biosecurity measures. Similarly, the federal Minister of Agriculture assured me, in an email, that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is “collaborating with the Canada Mink Breeders Association on communicating the importance of biosecurity measures,” relying on the industry’s own, voluntary codes of practice, which are overseen by the non-governmental National Farm Animal Care Council. Newfoundland and Labrador’s Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture, meanwhile, says farmers and farm veterinarians are “monitoring for any respiratory signs compatible with an infectious respiratory disease.”

But looking for respiratory symptoms is just not enough.

A typical mink farm holds as many as 20,000 animals, says Lesley Fox, the executive director of the Fur-Bearers, an animal-advocacy group. “And during pelting season right now, it’s even closer to 60,000 on some of these farms," she said in an interview. "So how in the world would one, two, three people max with a checklist and a clipboard be able to properly evaluate that many individuals?”

She’s not the only one with concerns. Jan Hajek, a clinical infectious disease specialist at Vancouver General Hospital, says he wishes the medical community would better acknowledge the public-health risks associated with farming such large numbers of animals. “Although the extent of the risk is uncertain, it is certain that a risk exists, and this risk includes devastating pandemic disease,” he said in an interview.

Indeed, the public should be asking whether farming mink is worth the potential risk. After all, as a fashion product, mink is increasingly falling out of favour. Prices for fur have plunged around the world. A recent survey by Research Co. found 81 per cent of Canadians are not in favour of killing animals for fur, and global fur sales have plummeted in recent years.

Yet governments continue to fund mink farming in Canada. The CBC has found that, since 2014, as much as $100-million in provincial and federal money has been spent or tied up in loans to keep mink farms alive. “The government knows these farms have the capacity and potential to further spread COVID-19,” said Ms. Fox. “To subsidize the industry is to contribute to this reservoir for disease.”

It is certainly curious that, with so many sectors of the Canadian economy being forced to shut down to try to curb the spread of COVID-19, fur farms are permitted to carry on with business as usual. “Mink farming in Canada has long imposed cruel costs on the animals and now poses real risks to human health,” said Liberal MP Nathanial Erskine-Smith. “It was unacceptable before, and it is even more unacceptable now.” He added that federal compensation to mink farming “should be tied to transitioning farmers into less problematic economic opportunities.”

Animal and environmental advocates have long called for the end to fur farming in Canada. Today, there is even greater reason than before. “If it’s not for animal welfare, if it’s not for the environment, if it’s not because it’s a failing business, surely a pandemic would inspire the political will to finally create space to have conversations about transitioning people out of this industry..."

I keep reading long complex dense jargon filled paragraphs, full of the minutiae that political junkies love but the massive central conflicts just get buried.

Thing is, "political" differences reduced to whether this dam should be built or this tax should be reduced/raised miss the point.

Thing is" what is it you feel/believe about your relationship to your local community. your state. your country, the rest of the world.

Thing is "who am I in all this?"

Till we start going there, we will forever be electing, supporting, Fascist leaders who push an "Us First" agendae...and we will be forever electing them, every 60 -70 yrs,( a generation or so), after tiny burst of "feel good" liberalism. that are regrettably short-lived cause we never stopped to figure out "why".

The Fine Print in a 5,593-Page Spending Bill: Tax Breaks and Horse Racing.....

Tucked away in the 5,593-page spending bill that Congress rushed through Monday night is a provision that some tax experts call a $200 billion giveaway to the rich.

Also it authorizes 93 acres of federal lands to be used for the construction of the Teddy Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota and creates an independent commission to oversee horse racing, a priority of Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the majority leader.

McConnell inserted that item to get around the objections of a Democratic senator, who wanted it amended, but he received agreement from other congressional leaders.

Alexander M. Waldrop, CEO of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, said Tuesday that McConnell had “said many times he feared for the future of horse racing and the impact on the industry, which of course is critical to Kentucky.”

Donald Trump met with Republican House minority leader Kevin McCarthy at Mar-a-Lago yesterday to discuss “taking back the House” during 2022 midterm elections, signaling the former president’s critical role in the fractured GOP’s future after it lost a Senate majority and the White House.

“President Trump’s popularity has never been stronger than it is today, and his endorsement means more than perhaps any endorsement at any time,” according to a statement from the former president’s political action committee Save America.

"His popularity has never been stronger" how can this be!?

The former president has “agreed to work with Leader McCarthy on helping the Republican Party to become a majority in the House," according to the statement. “The work has already started.”

Congressman McCarthy flip flopping on the riot! First he said....

“He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding,” he said in remarks to the House. “These facts require immediate action by President Trump: accept his share of responsibility, quell the brewing unrest and ensure [then-President-elect] Biden is able to successfully begin his term."

Congressman McCarthy later backtracked, telling reporters that he does not believe the former president “provoked” the insurrection, and that he believes “everybody across this country has some responsibility.” Kevin McCarthy now says all Americans are culpable for Capitol riot.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around why ANYONE would want an endorsement from that ex-president or even want their name mentioned with Trump's if they are running for office!

More lies. T***p's popularity rating is 38.6% today, according to fivethirtyeight.com. But he has solidly got 1/3 of the country who will do anything he says in his back pocket. That's a lot of voters to bring to the polls. Even if he gets impeached and can't run for public office again, there's still the problem of his endorsement. He can endorse whoever he wants. Somebody's going to have to think of something to pull that 1/3 of the country back to the center, or toward someone else on the far right. We can talk all day about how stupid they are, but that won't make them vote any differently.

Rep. Kinzinger: They claim 'I'm possessed by the devil'

Rep. Adam Kinzinger on Sunday offered a glimpse of what it’s like being one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump: Friends and family turned against him, and he was told he’s “possessed by the devil."
Rep. Adam Kinzinger on Sunday offered a glimpse of what it’s like being one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump: Friends and family turned against him, and he was told he’s “possessed by the devil.”

“Look it’s really difficult. I mean, all of a sudden imagine everybody that supported you, or so it seems that way, your friends, your family, has turned against you. They think you're selling out,” the Illinois congressman said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“I've gotten a letter, a certified letter, twice from the same people, disowning me and claiming I'm possessed by the devil.”

In the days after the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, it appeared Republican leaders had decided to take a stand against Trump, with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy saying Trump bore “responsibility” and that he must accept blame for the riot.

But GOP members have begun heading back to the former president. On Thursday, McCarthy met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, in a meeting that was later described as “very good and cordial.” The readout was released with a photo of the two men smiling.

“I was disappointed over the last few weeks to see what seemed like the Republican Party waking up and then kind of falling asleep again and saying, ‘Well, you know, what matters if we can win in two years and we don't want to tick off the base,’” Kinzinger said.

“The photo," he added, "shows that the former president is desperate to continue looking like he’s leading the party.”

Kinzinger has launched a website, Country1st.com, as an effort to refocus the Republican Party’s “conservative principles.”

Senator Lindsey Graham was immediately fact checked after he suggested he doubted Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene had made a number of unhinged statements supporting a variety of conspiracy theories.

"Are these postings accurate?" Mr Graham asked reporters. "I want to hear from her before I judge what to do about her, I want to know what the facts are. If these are not accurate postings, [and] they've been manipulated, I'd like to know that. If they are accurate, does she still hold these beliefs, so I'm going to wait for her to come forward and tell us exactly what's real and what's not, what she believes, then we'll have more information."

In response, a reporter pointed out that many of the comments were made on video.

Rather than adjusting his position, Mr Graham dodged the question and insisted he would have to speak with her before he could pass judgement on her statements.

"She'll have to tell me, is it accurate," Mr Graham said. "I don't know, I haven't seen the video, what's accurate, what's not. What position do you have today, and if your position is different today, why?"

Was Lindsy Graham always such a treacherous asshole or did all this start when Trump threatened to out him with photos, videos, emails and texts.?

All his adult life, Trump has followed and fed on "celebrity" gossip. There is no way he doesn't have a huge file on Lindsay Graham.

I believe Trump can destroy Graham with the release of this stuff and he reminds Lindsay often. South Carolina is not a socially liberal State.

Is this really so difficult to believe?

And how many other members of Congress does Trump have files on?

His hero is Lawyer Roy Cohn who weilded these kinds of files like a beheading sword for Joseph McCarthy...until Joseph Welch, special counsel for the U.S. Army, finally asked McCarthy: “Have You No Sense of Decency, Sir?"

And that was the beginning of McCarthy's house of cards crumbling.

Maybe Lindsay Graham should take a lesson from Arthur Wellesley,
Duke of Wellington, who famously responded in 1824, when the courtesan Harriette Wilson threatened to publish her memoirs and his letters to blackmail him , wrote back "Publish and be damned!".

Today, no one remembers Harriette Wilson.

Wisconsin School Board Members Vote Against Free Meal Program Because They Don't Want Families to 'Become Spoiled'

Man. We really need to rethink and rework some of our values in this country.

Members of the Waukesha, Wis. Board of Education are in hot water after opting out of a federal program that would provide free meals for all of the district’s students regardless of their family’s financial situations.

The Washington Post reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2021/08/27/waukesha-wisconsin-schools-reject-federal-program/) that Waukesha is the only eligible school district in Wisconsin that chose to return to offering either free or reduced-price instead of the universally free option that all public schools in the state adopted last year when the COVID-19 pandemic really started to kick it up a notch.

The universal program is an extension of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Seamless Summer Option, which will provide free meals to all students through June 30, 2022, according to the Post.

You might think the board’s decision is strange since we are still in a pandemic and many families are still struggling financially because of it. It gets worse when reading some of the reasons for the decision, which was made in June.

From the Washington Post:

A document from the board outlined a worry about the program’s effects on applications for the National School Lunch Program after the universal offering expires.

“As we get back to whatever you want to believe normal means, we have decisions to make,” Joseph Como Jr., president of the school board, said at the June meeting. “I would say this is part of normalization.”

Karin Rajnicek, a school board member, said the free program made it easy for families to “become spoiled.” Darren Clark, assistant superintendent for business services, said there could be a “slow addiction” to the service.

So, never mind the fact that in March, statistics compiled by Feeding America found that about 13 million kids may experience food insecurity this year–with Black, Latino and Native American children being disproportionately affected.

What matters here, at least based on these statements from the selected board members, is that these children learn to deal with the fact that they’ll just have to be hungry, because getting anything for free in this country is apparently much worse than BEING HUNGRY DURING A GLOBAL PANDEMIC.

Not only is that reasoning insanity defined, but the board president’s insistence that this is a step toward normalcy doesn’t make any sense either. This is not a normal time. At the rate things are going, it won’t be normal for a long while!

Plus, why is the free or reduced-price meal plan still the norm for many public schools? The Post reports that other school board members and Waukesha district employees notice that it still props up barriers for kids who may depend on school lunches as their only consistent meal during the academic year.

More from the Post:

Other members noted students had forgone meals funded by the National School Lunch Program in previous years. Jess Huinker, an executive assistant for the district, said she had noticed that some did not eat during school because they either did not qualify for free or reduced-price options or because their parents did not submit applications.

“We have seen kids that don’t eat,” she said.

WISN 12, an ABC affiliate, reports (https://www.wisn.com/article/parents-protest-waukesha-school-board-opting-out-free-lunch-funding/37419488#) that dozens of protestors rallied against the school board’s decision outside of the district headquarters on Friday.

Per WISN:

“By opting out of this free federal meal program, they have taken away meals from families that are in the in-between. They might not qualify for free and reduced lunches but could still use a helping hand, and we want to help families in the school district, and we feel our presence here will help do that,” rally organizer David Dringenburg said.

The Post reports that after two months of petitions and rallies similar to the one on Friday, the board will have a special meeting to discuss possible action on the district’s approach to the Seamless Summer Option on Monday.

We'll see how that goes.

Utah State football coach Blake Anderson apologized on Friday after he was caught on a recording telling his players earlier this year that it “has never been more glamorized to be the victim” of sexual assault.

Anderson’s comments came from a team meeting during fall camp. According to the Tribune, Anderson warned players that they are “way more at risk” of being accused of sexual assault because they are athletes, and said that being a victim of sexual assault has “never been more talked about in the news [than] right now.”

The university launched an investigation into the comments on Thursday, which surfaced after a recording published by the Salt Lake Tribune and mentioned in a Title IX lawsuit filed against the school by a student.

“In the course of that conversation, I used a phrase regarding victims of wrongdoing to magnify that message to our team, but after reading my comments in the transcript that was released, I realize my choice of words was hurtful,” Anderson said in a statement through the school. “I regret the words I used, and I apologize to anyone who has bravely come forward with allegations of wrongdoing. We have to do everything we can to encourage and protect anybody who has been the victim of a wrong, or whose personal rights have been violated. Anyone who knows me knows how strongly I feel about this. Giving victims a safe platform to address wrongs they’ve suffered is always the right thing to do, and something I’ll always stand for.”

The NFL will stop mandating weekly COVID-19 tests for asymptomatic vaccinated players, according to memos distributed Saturday that described a major shift in the league's approach to the pandemic.

The new protocols, which take effect next week, could allow the virus to spread undetected through locker rooms, and could increase opportunities for infected but otherwise healthy players to participate in games.

Kyle Rittenhouse claimed he'll attend Texas A&M University on a podcast, but university officials tell a different story, saying he has not been admitted as a student. During an appearance on “The Charlie Kirk Show,” a conservative podcast, Rittenhouse proudly put on a Texas A&M cap and said he’d be attending the university.

“I’m going to be going there. It’s going to be awesome,” the 19-year-old said during the episode, which aired Friday on YouTube. “Beautiful campus, amazing people, amazing food.”

However, a university official said he will not be attending the school. “He has not been admitted as a student this summer or fall,” university spokesperson Kelly Brown told NBC News Monday afternoon.

In case you've forgotten who Rittenhouse is, he was the 17 year old who drove from his home in Antioch, Illinois, to Kenosha, Wisconsin, in response to protests for shooting a Black man by a white officer. Rittenhouse had said he wanted to help law enforcement protect property amid civil unrest. He was accused of fatally shooting two men and injuring another with his rifle. He was acquitted of multiple felony charges during his high-profile trial, in which he argued he acted in self-defense.

Kyle Rittenhouse now says he’s going to Blinn College, after Texas A&M said he’s not a student!

Days after he told a conservative podcast that he was going to Texas A&M University, Kyle Rittenhouse corrected himself on Twitter to say that he is planning to attend Blinn College, a two-year public college, this year.

“Unfortunately, the end of my high school career was robbed from me,” Rittenhouse wrote Monday afternoon on Twitter. “I didn’t have the time other students get to properly prepare for the future. I look forward to attending Blinn College District this year, a feeder school for Texas A&M. I’m excited to join Texas A&M in 2023!”

IMHO If the Whining little bitch hadn't gone to Kenosha, he'd of had time to prepare!

It's my own personal opinion but I too have a issue that neither addressed Aids. Both had political and Hollywood ties and could of spearheaded campaigns to draw attention to the crisis and didn't! Thank god Liz Taylor pitched in and helped!

Both Nancy and Ronny ruined a lot of lives. The whole Drug Tzar thing and that high mandatory sentencing for even the smallest amounts. When I owned a townhouse outside of FLL in Pembroke Lakes, my neighbor was smoking a joint on his front porch, a cop came by and arrested him. He was cruising the streets, and this was a two-rance community that was pretty much tucked away. My spouse then could very well have been out there with him. They were good friends. They busted his son, too, but he got out. We were very tight-lipped about the whole thing. She was paranoid about everything after that. I can't blame her.

This guy got 10-20 years in prison for a small amount of weed for personal use. I know for a fact that the weed was all he had. They almost lost their home. The wife and son worked hard to make ends meet. He built up his landscaping business, and she went to work doing some difficult job that made her come home dead tired. When I lost my townhouse in the Great Recession, he still had not come home, which was over ten years. I got acid from another neighbor.

The AIDS Crisis was horrible back then. They needed research money badly. It caused the largest LGBT march in DC. I was in that action and the die-in in front of the SCOTUS. I worked medical for the die-in in case the DC police injured one of the participants. Cops weren't about to touch anyone who had AIDS. Organizers put all the medical staff in isolation gowns, gloves, and goggles if they caused significant injury with bleeding.

That was after the march itself, where the Leather Contingent were sharp. There were Leathermen in chaps, codpiece, shined boots, and a vest. That's it for the bottoms. The Tops wore head-to-toe shined leather. They put the Leatherdykes up front with our biker jackets with chains on our applets. T, The men put those of us sporting floggers and whips in front by the banner that read "Leather Contingent." When we started, all you could hear was the thuddy sound of leather slapping leather and the swinging of chains in unison. Have no photos of that, but the Leather Archives in Chgo has many. I think it's on Clark or used to be, near Women and Children First Books around Foster. A few of us watched the entire march from beginning to end. It was impressive; we returned to the starting point and watched the groups come through. The crowd estimate was 250,000.

It was also the last time the entire NAMES Quilt was displayed, taking up nearly the whole Ellipse. It took about four hours for me to walk it, tears the entire time. Think I did that before the march; we were there four or five days. A good friend, Drusilla (scene name), booked a two-bedroom suite at the Watergate. She is/was a psychiatrist, so she had a little money. She took one-bedroom, I the other. We had a bunch of women staying in the suite's main room on the floor, one of whom brought me my morning coffee...good times from a negative.

The whole point of the march and the SCOTUS action was LGBT rights and money for AIDS research. In the 1980s-90s, I got news of more friend's deaths every week, some by suicide, to avoid the horrible AIDS-related cancers, toxoplasmosis, and PCP. I still see my Leather brothers, who were taken by senseless ignorance. The first time I heard about these new once-a-day wonder pills that make HIV undetectable by lab tests and make it not passed any longer by sex, I wept. How many people could that have saved? Good friends who were lost too young. The Leather community collapsed on itself. My friends and I shuttled condoms from AIDS awareness charities to the Leather bars like The Eagle and bathhouses. The fishbowls were always empty before we could get more.

I was still a young kid in the 80s but I remember the Reagans war on drugs, I didnt understand it much till I got older and got into drugs, weed is not a drug, its a plant that cures diseases and help people with chronic pain.. haha chronic.. sorry had a lil giggle. I still see people being jailed over weed more than meth, cocaine, heroin, pills, etc....yet we all know big pharma is behind the pills. I recall my first time of having a friend with AIDS, he was an older gay guy I met at drug rehab, we spoke on many occasions about his life, how he thinks he got AIDS and he educated me on things I never knew, because schools don't educate properly..imo...He told me he got aids from sharing a needle with an infected person, IV drug used, not cleaning a needle, constant sharing and numerous partners. Not long after we both completed our stint in rehab, this was my 2nd, he passed away, like 4 months after, I found out through a NA group we used to attend together. I was hurt, because if those medical drugs were available at the time it is now, he would still be here!

HE is the one who taught me to be transparent with telling my partners everything from my drug past, shared needles, always get hiv and aids tests, I still do even after being clean for 20 plus years. I miss him, very much, if he was around and telling his stories maybe we wouldn't have the epidemic we have now.

I agree it is deadly.

I just don't think it's so much that he is removed from reality as he is trying to create his own, i think he is very clear on his message and the things he says, as ridiculous as they sound to most thinking people, reinforces the narrative the radical right is trying to portray. I think it is a purposeful misdirection and it is a part of the Republican agenda (at least what passes as Republican nowadays). It is dog whistling. And it is heard loud and clear by those who wish to blame the government/liberals/Biden for their problems and still hold fast to that ludicrous narrative about lazy poor people (especially POC) who are being mollycoddled while sucking on the government teat. One thing it is not is a benign statement made by some out of touch politician who just doesn't understand. He understands perfectly well what he is doing and saying and who he is talking to.

Got no idea how these nuevo riche have so much money. Did they get the same stimulus checks that I got? It went for bills. Since CoVid, many businesses closed for good, at least up here. Folks are poor here. The idea of The Great Resignation is a frequently the butt of jokes at the market. No one is spending like there's no tomorrow. So, again I ask, did these people with the money to take expensive, unnecessary trips and buy some previously unseen evidence of Conspicuous Consumption get the same as I did?
OR
Are they spending their inheritance? All I know is that one NEVER spends the principle according to my parents who weathered the Great Depression rather nicely and always found money for charity. At home, we might have been told to tighten our belts, but charity was mandatory just like the electric bill. There are many going hungry in the US as well as elsewhere. I'm on SSDI, but still give about half of the it to charity. Maybe, they don't spend frivolously on charity. That could be it. I waste money on charity <said tongue-in-cheek>.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., suggested in a videotaped podcast this week that the shootings on the Fourth of July, including the one in Highland Park, Illinois, were “designed” to get Republicans to support gun restrictions.

“Here’s what I have to say. I mean. Two shootings on July 4: one in a rich white neighborhood and the other at a fireworks display. It almost sounds like it’s designed to persuade Republicans to go along with more gun control. As summer barbecues become more expensive, Stew Leonard Jr., president and CEO of Stew Leonard's, has noticed that consumer behavior is changing.

"We can tell customers are starting to be a little more frugal about their shopping list," said Leonard, who owns seven grocery store locations.

The average cost of a summer cookout for 10 people has risen to $69.98 this year, a 17% increase year-over-year, the American Farm Bureau reported.

And according to the latest consumer price index data, food costs are up 10.1% year over year as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and global supply chain snarls have led to price increases in a wide variety of groceries. Ketchup prices have spiked 21%, snacks are up more than 13%, hot dogs more than 10%, and ice cream prices have risen nearly 10%. Beer, meanwhile, has only increased about 4%.

But Greene called his actions “quite the compliment.” She even had Stein on her podcast.

U.S. judge declines to acquit ex-Trump adviser Bannon, but mulls dismissing charges.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -A federal judge on Wednesday declined a request to acquit Donald Trump's former presidential adviser Steve Bannon on two contempt charges for defying a subpoena from a congressional committee investigating the 2021 Capitol attack, but he left open the door to consider dismissing the charges instead.

A jury on Friday found Bannon, 68, guilty of two misdemeanor counts for refusing to provide testimony or documents to the House of Representatives select committee as it scrutinizes the Jan. 6, 2021, rampage by Trump's supporters.

In Wednesday's ruling, U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols said Bannon's last-ditch request for the court to acquit him of the charges lacked merit. "The court concludes that the evidence presented in the government’s case was sufficient to sustain a conviction," Nichols wrote.

However, the judge said he still wants both parties to provide additional legal briefs before he can rule on Bannon's second request that Nichols dismiss the charges.
