Hey Folks-

A friend alerted me to this and I thought it might be good for us to engage in a little activism and make some noise for this one:

Might want to make a call, share this article to your Facebook, or send an email to the school board. I hope they will overturn this decision so that this young woman can attend her prom wearing whatever the fuck she pleases:

This young lady attends a high school in my home town. I actually went to the same high school (and same named JR high school) when my town desegregated (yes, I'm that old.)

We have the president of the school board (Dr. Rodney McFarland) on her side because says:

Update: After hearing of Love's plight from members of the community who saw The News-Star's article, Monroe City School Board President Rodney McFarland contacted The News-Star to say that he will take action on Love's behalf.
McFarland said he will contact Superintendent Brent Vidrine and request that he discuss the rule with the school's principal.
"As school board president, I don't agree with Carroll banning her from her prom just because of what she wants to wear -- that's discrimination," he said. "As far as I know there is no Monroe City School Board policy saying what someone has to wear to attend the prom. You can't just go making up policies."

And that gives me hope. But the more noise, the better. The bigots need to understand that we aren't going to back down from discrimination--whether it is a whole state or one young lesbian who wants to feel good about herself at her own prom.

It astounds me that this kind of thing is still any sort of issue. I wore a tux to my senior prom in 1980! Granted, that was at an American high school overseas and the attitudes were much more open. I am heartened that Dr. McFarland has seen the light. I will gladly lend my voice to the cause.

As an aside, I think it's great that the young woman at the center of this has the last name of Love.
