It's no secret, I love my Mac. I also love my iPod and iPhone and will soon love the iPad if I can get over the name. :)

I just discovered the new app for iPhone, "Gmail Push" so that I can get a phone alert when someone reports a post. It ROCKS!

Any other favorite apps I should know about?

Post your tips, tricks, thoughts, etc. here for all things iLife.

We are a two-Mac household. We also have an iPhone (mine) and two iPods (Jaime's new Touch and my older Nano) along with a Time Capsule and Apple TV. While the iPad is intriguing, honestly, it doesn't solve a problem that I have. I have a Kindle, a Macbook Pro (sweet jesus I love that thing) and an iPhone. I'm still debating with myself whether to buy an iMac so that I have a desktop machine as well as a laptop. (Although my MBP has a 20" Cinema display as a monitor)

In my 20 years of owning computers this is *hands-down* the best rig I've owned.

Cheers

I need and itutor to help me learn how to use the istupid ipod I got for iChristmas!! I am so technically inept, and just kind of old school using my little MP3 player that held 20 songs. Now I can't figure out how to do anything with this ipod!

*sigh* sometimes I hate technology...I just can't seem to keep up!

I <3 my iPod. And my previous iPod. And the previous Nano.

iTunes is ok. There are actually other music organizers I like better and websites which have better download quality. I use iTunes because it is the default.

When I was researching laptops, I SO wanted to get a Mac, but even with gifted money from family, I just could not afford it. Someday though... :)

I would be enticed to buy an iPhone if was on Verizon. AT&T is not my friend.

The iPad...I'm not sold yet.

AJ & Jamie have an awesome music set up at their house with the TV/iPhone/remote/speaker/Mac/anotherappletechnologythingy... frankly I don't know how it is all set-up. But it is very cool :D

Write me privately, I will give you my personal email address and we can do a web chat session using my employer's system where I can show you how to manage your music using iTunes. It'll have to be a weekend though as I work full-time and go to school 3/4 time.

Ok Aj! Talk to me about Apple Tv! I have been eyeballing it for a while and almost got it for myself for Christmas but I hadnt done the research and didnt know exactly what it can do.

Can you play iTunes through your tv with it? How about photos on your laptop? Can you see those on the big screen?

Ok Aj! Talk to me about Apple Tv! I have been eyeballing it for a while and almost got it for myself for Christmas but I hadnt done the research and didnt know exactly what it can do.

Can you play iTunes through your tv with it? How about photos on your laptop? Can you see those on the big screen?

Okay, I LOVE the Apple TV! So here's what it can do:

1) One machine can sync with it so that it mirrors your iTunes library (for me, because my iTunes library is so huge, I only mirror part of it (videos and TV shows). Anything I buy from the iTunes store on the Apple TV (uses your existing wireless network) will automagically sync back to my MBP. You can also sync music and photos. It's the *same* (in iTunes) as you would use for your iPod so you can select what you want to sync and what you don't.

2) Anything you don't want to sync or don't have space for, the Apple TV will play from the machine you use to sync provided iTunes is currently running on that machine.

3) Any OTHER machine can share its music library on the network and you can play anything on any machine with a shared iTunes library.

4) Anything that *won't* sync to the Apple TV (like Audible files) you can *stream* to the Apple TV and use it as a remote speaker.

5) Any iPod or iPhone that joins the wireless network can be set up as a remote control. When we had our wedding at the house, I posted the wireless password on the front door so any guest who came in could use their iPhone or iPod to request songs in the library.

6) You can stream YouTube.

7) You can stream Internet Radio

8) You can rent movies at about what you would pay for a rental at your video store (sometimes less than video store rentals).

9) It's HD so you can view your movies in high def.

10) If you have a MobileMe (used to be .Mac) account you can view your photo gallery as a slideshow or stream movies that are posted there.

Now the cons:

A) You can't stream Netflix.
B) You can't sync Audible audiobooks you buy direct from Audible but you *can* sync Audible audiobooks that you buy from the iTunes store.
C) There were some early stability issues but the latest firmware upgrade (free) fixed those.

Honestly I think it's well worth the price. One other nice thing about it is that, for me, it acts as a *second* back-up of my media files. So on my home network there are three copies of all of the movies I've bought from the iTunes store. One on my laptop, one in the backup for the laptop, and one on the Apple TV.

Cheers
Aj

Love Love LOVE my iTouch..
I still haven't mastered adding from iTunes entirely w/o erasing my current List into oblivion...
But, I lurv the apps!! [I frequently play Jeopardy, Scrabble & 3-D chess, any other suggestions for Game Apps?]
I still smirk when thinking of a confusion had..
My mother saw my iPod on her counter, and said 'looks like your brother left his iPhone'...and I said 'that's not his, it's mine'
she asked how could I distinguish, and I said "well, 2 simple ways... his iPhone is somewhat heavier, thicker...And if u flip my iPod it very clearly says 'iPod'"
Her sheepish smile was adorable

Another iPerson here...I don't have an iPhone, nor do I have an iPod (my current fancy 16gb non iPhone does what I need it to on the phone and music front and is eminently less desirable to thieves). I do however run 2x G5 iMacs, my housemate has the best looking iMac ever made - G4 with the flat panel screen on a chrome arm - although it's very old and asthmatic nowadays. I've even kept hold of my old G3 Blueberry iMac to use as an 'over-flow' external hd...Somewhere upstairs is an old Mac clone with a huge 20in CRT monitor. Finally, my gorgeous girl also runs a MBP with a 19in studio display.

I have never owned a *spits* Windows machine and never would although I have had cause in the past 2 or 3 years to actually use one.

I am thinking about getting Apple TV but haven't quite gotten round to it yet.

I'd love an iPad.

I saw this thread title and got the biggest, goofiest grin ever!

Love my iBook!

Love my iPod touch!

Love my iPhone!

And will love my iPad, I am quite certain!

I too have never owned anything other than a mac. I first learned programming on an Apple IIe - when floppy disks really were floppy and the screen was green. I am forced to use a pc where I work, but every night come home to my mac.

Although it's not hooked up at the moment I still have my old G3 desktop - beige - right before beige was no longer available. I know I should get rid of it but I just can't... I'd love to get an iMac, but can't quite justify it at the moment.

Got a question: does anyone have MobileMe? What exactly does it do and would you recommend it?

Oh, and another question, software related. I've got a version of word that I think was made especially for the mac but have a really difficult time if I have to work on documents on it as well as a pc. I also can't figure out how to use tracking changes on it. My sense is that it is a sub-par program, but that's just a guess. In any case, any of you who have to go back and forth between platforms, what works for you?

Thanks ya'll, and rock on with your iLife!!!!!

I'm waiting until the 2nd or 3rd Gen versions come out. Additionally, the iPhone is being upgraded this summer to run on other carriers other than AT&T. (June/July 2010 apparently) so I'm waiting for that version before I get one.

MobileMe is a place to store photos, back-up your apps or drive, and have up to eight (I think,) email addresses. I use it, I like it.

Yes, but like Linus, will wait for the second or third gen, lower prices, bugs worked out. When I synched my iPhone today I noticed a new feature on itunes - it now shows which of my apps are available for the iPad - at last count 4 out of 117 - another reason to wait.

But yeah, one of these days...

Is anyone getting an iPad? Im curious about all the functions!

My Motorola Razr is finally dying and I've decided that once the iPhone 4 comes out, I'm getting it. After reading the features I figure it'll be worth it. It's unfortunate it's still part of AT&T (who announced the recent cap on GB but it may still be fine):

I have an early macbook pro ... the ones that the batteries and power cords die often. other than that, I love it ... well, I've worn out the "e" and "i" keys completely, but I know where they are on the board *shrugs*. There is also an iPod, nearing 4 years old.

Recently, I started to buy an iPhone, but was determined to rid myself of AT&T forever, so I bought a Droid on sale at Best Buy. I can't figure out most of the functions, and the "instructional" booklet is a joke. So, I am going to make myself go back to BB and get bit by bit instructions on how to save a phone number, etc. I will say that the Droid takes fabulous photos with 8 mp available for use.

I am thinking that I will probably need to upgrade and get a new macbook pro next year. This one is my first ... I always wanted one because of the A-V features, but had to use a pc for work. Even with the lousy battery and cord life, which I understand is no longer a problem, I wouldn't give up the MB for anything! The iPod, however, I can live without... just not that technically savvy and it sits around for an occasional use.

If you need a PC for work and want a MacBook, then invest in my company's product: Fusion (http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/). This allows you to run Windows XP/Vista/7 (you'll have to buy those OSes separately) on your MacBook better than the PC hardware.

I use it a fair amount, but I don't read on it. After taking it on a ten day trip and leaving my Kindle at home for the first time I really missed the Kindle.

I tried it. I read a lot. And there are a couple of issues with reading on the iPad. First, it's heavy. Compared to the iPad the kindle is light as a feather and easy to hold in one hand. Even in a bookcase it's lighter. Second, it's back-lit. Which presents a couple of issues. Most notably - just try to read it outside in the sun. Or even on an overcast day. Good luck. Even in a well lit room it can be difficult. Finally, if you read for hours at a time, as I do, you'll wind up with some pretty serious eye fatigue. I'll not give up my Kindle until there's a better reading experience.

The iPad is great for a number of things, reading just isn't one of them.

I pre-ordered the 32gb black.

My latest install was Qrushr Girls. I think it's more meant for women who are single, but the thing I find awesome about it is that it has a sort of gaydar built into it - it uses your current location and tells you what other lesbians you are near. I wish there were one for LGBTQ that didn't have this weird hookup/relationship energy - but just functioned more in a pride/networky way. I downloaded it to check out how the radar worked though, and there are definitely other people in my area who say, "I'm happy in a relationship - just wanted to be on the map" so it sounds like people are subverting its purpose a bit. :)

Damnit I want real-ass gaydar on my iphone now. :)

My current favorite iphone app is redlaser. You use your camera as a barcode scanner and it does price comparisons locally and online. If you scan a food item's barcode it also gives you the nutritional values and food allergens. You can also use it to scan barcodes of books and see which local library has them.

It's AWESOME!

Hrmm.. That's good to know. I wonder if the 2nd Gen or 3rd Gen will be lighter. I tend to not read outside so the glare issue never would have occurred to me but I wonder if something like this (http://www.powersupportusa.com/product/show/ipad-antiglare-film) would help?

Perhaps the need for an app that could allow one to read while reducing eye fatigue.

Welp. My students this week warned me that the iPhone would change everything.. and they were pretty much right. I downloaded some neat apps like RedLaser (allows me to get bar codes and find out where it's cheaper), ColorSplash (see my gallery and the blue flowers for what that does) and JotNot Pro (allows me to use my iPhone as a mini-scanner -- easier expenses!). This thing has been sooooo awesome!

I will say the battery still needs to be better but then again, I'm pushing the envelope on it. I will say that it's nice that AT&T created an app so I can track my usage (minutes and data). I can see what I use daily and if I'm getting near limits. :)

I will say the battery still needs to be better but then again, I'm pushing the envelope on it. I will say that it's nice that AT&T created an app so I can track my usage (minutes and data). I can see what I use daily and if I'm getting near limits. :)

AT&T will send you a text at 60% and at 90 (maybe 95?)% usage. I'm a pretty heavy user and have yet to go over 2GB in a month. I've hung on to my unlimited usage but those plans are actually not that bad. Loads of customers are happy with it.

I looked at the Bumper but I want some a little more durable for the runs between airport gates, etc. :) I did get another one so that will come this week.

Hrmm?

My old iphone has been naked for six months and tossed in literally dozens of airport bins throughout the world and never got scratched. The bumper keeps the surface of the iPhone off other surfaces so it should suffice. But that being said, get what you're comfy with.

Ya. I had someone else tell me that but given that this thing has glass front and back (see this article here (http://www.pcworld.com/article/198476/iphone_4_glass_housing_put_to_the_test.html)) I have to be more cautious about it.

*shrug*

The front of the 3Gs is glass too. Six months, innumerable trips through security. Carried in pocket, in bag, in car. No scratches without any protection at all.

I've got the 4 too. Three trips through security since getting it on the 24th and no problems to date.

But, while I treat my belongings well I'm not the sort to wig out over protecting them with accoutrement.

But dropping and scratching, two different things. I know people who have had their iphone screens shatter for much less in cold weather.

Hope you find something that works for you.

I will. Right now it's finding a case.

One interesting side effect is that the screen is so bright they when I look at the TV it seems so dull and hard on the eyes. It's weird. I have to set the brightness to a very low setting otherwise my eyes are kinda wigged out. Quite honestly that's my only issue thus far.

Oh gads..

I spent today learning about iphones and all things scary..

I found it very amusing that me... the girl who does not have a cell phone, sort of hates cell phones, has spent the last year looking at cell phones knowing she probably needs to get one, but not really wanting one, would be the person someone called about their cell phone...

But then the job I really wanted called and said I could work for them and now I don't have to know anything about cell phones again...

Grin..

I just succumbed to my need for a geek toy and got an iPad. It's really awesome. Reading on this, watching Netflix in the backyard and even editing Powerpoint is so much nicer. The battery on it is really impressive as well. I only got the WiFi version but it's still pretty good. My only complaint is that it's not iOS 4 so no multi-tasking. :(

I also got a free texting app which lets me text without eating up my 250 texts on my phone

I was giving my first iPhone back in 2008 and dropped it on Halloween. I cried like a baby...All of my contacts were on that phone and since the screen came unattached from the rest of the phone, I couldn't retrieve them. I now have a iPhone 3G that I have had a year with a Hello Kitty case to protect it. I had to go back in June and have the face replaced after the hearing device on it made everyone sound like they were in a tunnel and I will never by another type of cell phone again. My ex gave me her Android phone from Sprint and it was slow as shit and just not as good. I also have a iPod Shuffle in hot pink that I bought two years ago in November when I bought my car.

If I could afford the Mac computers, I would be buying one of those!

The most rated shop in the bay area, in SF, keeps trying to talk me into a macbook, and says that I don't need a macbook pro. He is probably correct, but the pro is what I am accustomed to, the speed, the ability to switch from video, to slides, to presentation on that 15 inch screen, and edit. I don't do this often, I lack some of the technical knowledge to do more, but it does not mean that I will never do them. I ain't fixed and like to learn. And, the macbook screen is smaller - I don't like that. The aluminum case on the pro is, well, sexy, compared to the white plastic of the macbook.

Anyway, as the guy suggested, I went to Apple dealer. How many ways can you spell mobbed? Back to school crowds. I punked around one at best buy. It seemed slower. I really don't like the smaller screen.

So, right here, I've convinced myself for the pro :giggle: I've seen some used out of state in shops, good prices, but without any software. I need to call Apple since I purchased mine from them with software that I selected already installed. If I had the discs, that would save $. I wonder if Apple will install what I purchased in the past since I paid for it?

So goes my sojourn of getting back to mac....

Heya Waxnrope,

I don't see why Apple wouldn't install the software onto your new MacBook Pro. The store that I went to in Jacksonville when I had to have my iPhone fixed, was real friendly. They even put on the screen protector for me.

I am so tempted to get an iPad for e-books if nothing else. I have to get rid of the vast majority of my books (thousands) to downsize from a house to an apartment. In the future, it would be nice if my home library acquisitions could be in electronic form for the sake of floor space.

So here's an amusing story for all you Macheads:

Jack got the new iPhone4 for me for my birthday yesterday. Cool, right? I was all excited to start using it but when I plugged it in to update it, it informed me that I had to upgrade my version of iTunes to be able to use my phone.

I hit the little "software update" thing and it kept saying "no new updates found". :|

Eventually, after a little research I discovered that in order to update my iTunes to 10, that I would have to upgrade Safari.

Tried to upgrade Safari and was informed that I had to upgrade my entire OS! I was still running Leopard 10.2 :)

So after overnighting the Snow Leopard disk to myself, a 4 hour backup, and 3 different downloads, I'm finally able to use my iPhone! WEEEEE!

But I have found one nicety if I want a newer model check the refurbished area on the iStore. You can buy new previous gen models for cutrate prices. I'm also considering the refurbished 8 gig iPod Touch. Only $99 what a deal.

While I like my iPad for many things - reading is not one of them. This is particularly true if you're a voracious reader. I have a Kindle for reading and that goes with me everywhere. It's way cheaper and super light/easy to hold for hours. Sometimes a dedicated device is a better option. :)

I've had an iPod nano for several years now. I just ran out of room on it for all my music, so got some $$ for my birthday and ordered the black 160gb iPod classic (most recent generation).

I cannot WAIT to transfer all of my audio tapes, LP's and CD's to digital format. I was (still am) a huge Genesis fan back in my teen years and have lots and lots and lots of stuff to archive before the stuff gets too old to transfer..... Also splurged a little and got myself a copy of Roxio Creator Pro 2011 so I can do all kinds of neat things including audio and video editing (which will work great now I have a digital camera that shoots video in stereo).

Any of you do all these neat things for a hobby?

If so, can you please point me in the right direction as to the right kind of cord I am going to need to plug into my stereo on one end and my computer's USB drive on the other end?

Thanks! I am really excited about this and can't wait to start....it really sounds cool!

Dressy! This sounds like a fun project!

I, too, LOVE me some Genesis and if it's on a record with a few crackly scratches? Even better!

I know there are turntable/cassette combos out there that will transfer your digital for you for the best sound quality (this is the one I like: http://www.amazon.com/Ion-TTUSB-Turntable-USB-Record/dp/B000BUEMOO) but I believe you can use a regular headphone cable on your "output" jack on your turntable or tuner and plug it directly to your "input" jack on your laptop.

Then you can use a program like Audacity (FREE!) http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ to read the music into your system.

You will probably have to play with it a bit to get the sound quality where you want it but it's fairly easy.

Sounds like a FUN project!

I've never used it but used it's predecessors, FileMaker. They are usually pretty straightforward and easy. This should be fine for more home/Small Business needs but if the intent is to have 1,000,000 transactions as second it might be a bit of a lightweight.

Personally, I prefer MySQL instead (through the use of LAMP -- Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP)

I am a complete Mac fiend. At home I run a 2 yr. old Mac Pro that I brought up to 12 gigs of RAM. That baby is my third Mac since 1998. I, also have a 3G/WiFi iPad that I carry with me all the time. It is a fabulous piece of technology, that I would recommend to anyone. The new iPad is even better it seems. More memory, faster graphics, bigger flash drive, both a video and still camera.

I have to use PCs at work. They are just not the same as Macs. Apple's OSX is a much superior OS than anything Microsoft has come up with, IMO, based on my experience with both systems.

Regarding Bento, I don't use it because it isn't a program I need. The reviews on it seem to be quite decent, however. If I needed a database program, I would probably choose Bento because the reviews have been so good. Hope that helps.

Get my company's software, Fusion (http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/overview.html). This avoids having to partition one's hard drive and you can still run those weird Windows apps as needed. :cheesy:

I do not get anything for promoting it here other than the satisfaction of knowing that it works well (fast! Heck, my former WinXP image/VM runs faster on my Mac than it did my PC) and leaves you with flexibility to do things. :)

Thanks for the info and recommendations Linus. I'm lucky enough to have been given my iMac by college and it comes ready loaded with Office 2011 which I've started to get used to using - after a shaky start in September when I was faced with an OS I'd never used and Office which I'd never used. Do you have a PC or a Mac? If the contacts are all on your computer (Outlook or Apple Address Book), you can do a simple sync-and-replace from the info screen in iTunes. I'm curious to know which iPhone and which version of the iOS, also, both what you had before and to what version you were attempting an update... that definitely shouldn't happen. (You don't have a MobileMe or "Dot Mac" account, either, I'm guessing?)

I'm right now in Sydney, on my way to Singapore. I didn't get a chance to check out the Sydney Apple Store (even though it was just down the street  ) but I'm going to see if I can check out the ones in Singapore, Beijing and Tokyo.

Okay... I'm spending way too much time posting sexy automobiles to the car thread not to share, over here, the new iPhone 4 case I just ordered:

http://karaskustomsonline.com/apple/iphone-4g/iphone-4g.html

It's a custom machined metal case made by a company that also makes hot rod engine parts. Hot and sleekly industrial-looking, and it's around the same price as most plastic and silicone cases.

News of Apple's participation in a controversial online platform called Christian Values Network (CVN) is spreading like wildfire this week. CVN's platform allows users to donate part of their online purchases from iTunes or the Apple Store to “charity” - including anti-gay groups like Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council, and even (appallingly!) Scott Lively’s Abiding Truth Ministries.

Apple may not mean to be funding hate groups. In fact, they've publicly supported LGBT rights in the past, even donating a $100,000 to stop an anti-gay hate law in the US. But now that they know what’s really going on at CVN, it’s time to pull out.

BBC America, Microsoft, Delta, and most recently Macy’s have cut ties with CVN under public pressure. But computer giant Apple is still participating, despite more than 20,000 people signing a petition on Change.org started by Ben Crowther, a fan of Apple and equality. That's why we're joining Ben to turn up the heat and demand action.

Click here to sign the petition telling Apple to dump CVN and stop funding anti-gay hate groups:

www.allout.org/stop_funding_hate

Right now, people can buy Apple products through CVN and direct a portion of their purchase to groups that focus on spreading hateful lies about LGBT people and fight against their full inclusion in society.

One of the "charities" you can support with a portion of your Apple purchase is Abiding Truth Ministries, a group known for spreading outrageous anti-gay rhetoric, including the assertion that LGBT people were responsible for the Holocaust¹, and has even been linked to Uganda’s infamous “Kill the Gays” bill.² Another so called "charity" is The Family Research Council, a group that has fought to repeal hate crimes legislation in the US and has directed its members to pray for the continued criminalization of homosexuality in Malawi.³

Ben Crowther has helped drive a mass exodus of corporations from CVN and draw attention to the hate groups they are supporting. And if enough of us join the call, Apple will have to respond.

Join Ben, Change.org, and AllOut.org in demanding that Apple stop using CVN’s platform and publicly condemn the funding of hate groups.

Shame on Apple for the homophobic app.

That being said: I love my IPhone. Laying on the couch writing this with it right now. I have way too many apps though & periodically delete ones I don't use. Love the Kindle & IBooks features too. Thinking about getting an IPad for the larger screen. The Blackberry Playbook also looks pretty good.

To think that when I was a kid we had about 5 TV channels!

You can make the Font larger just by putting two fingers together on the screen and then sliding them away from each other. I had mine for several months before I figured that out!

I only have an iPhone but my favorite apps are:

The weather channel
Flixter (to check movie times based on location)
Iscopes (these are just silly horoscopes but still fun)

Okay more later - phone's gonna die

Just get some dvds and back up all the music in her library. She should be backing it up to disks anyway.

using an external hard drive to back up music, movies and saved media is a great way to keep things organized. i use a WD My Book Essential. there are many out there that range in price and storage space. see how much music and other stuff she needs backed up and decide size of hard drive.

External drives cost peanuts nowadays. You can get a (well branded) terrabyte here for around £60 (That's under $100) but back up your favourite music to disc as well because hard-drives can fail too - I speak from experience sadly. I lost quite a number of irreplaceable photos (and music) when my hard-drive failed with my 365 project on it which means I've not be able to have my project book printed. :(

Signed the AllOut petition and put it on my fb and G+ walls...I know plenty of folks who will sign it.

I do know about the two fingers and making things bigger, Droids have that too.. However you can not make the screen bigger when texting or writing... :( :(

I'm going to give it till Monday and if I still don't like it. I will switch. The graphics from an iPhone to a Droid are night and day, Droid blows the doors off the iPhone.

The battery life on this thing blows. Yesterday I added 5 apps and sent out 9 text messages (no phone calls) and my battery was dying already. I had nothing running in the background other than to search for apps for about 45 minutes. So far I haven't had it for more than 24 hours and I've recharged it 3 times. Maybe I received a bad battery??

Just open up ITunes on your computer and plug your phone into your computer. Non-technical description but it works! On IBooks they have a free iPhone manual that is easy to understand and tells you how to do things.

I hope this helps. There are way more tech-savvy people one the planet that may be better able to explain than I!

Not putting your iphone in sleep mode when you aren't using it will wear the battery down pretty fast. It will eventually put itself in sleep mode and you can change how long it takes to do so in your settings. You'll still get notifications and other reminders pushed and they will pop-up as received;however, you won't be able to see them afterward or any time what's on your screen until you hit the round button with the square on it at the bottom. To put your phone in sleep mode, click on the button on the top right of the phone.

You also might want to check your brightness settings

Last night a friend told me I can check what programs are running and how to "turn them off" kinda. Press the round button twice and at the bottom come the programs. Hold one of the icons down and when they are shaking turn them off using the minus sign on each icon.
My question is, does putting the phone in sleep mode using the top button do the same thing or is other way better to conserve the battery?

hmmm. when I double-click on the home button when not in sleep mode it shows the last 4 apps I used, not apps that are running. When in sleep mode it double-clicking on the home button gives me access to ipod controls. I have an iphone 3.

Apple says that in iOS4 if you double-click the home button it lets you multitask.

I love my IPhone 3GS. I would like to upgrade to the 5 but will lose a couple if the games I play as they do not transfer over at the levels I am now.

Re: double clicking, I keep a whole ton of apps open at the same time. I only close them if I need to do an update as it will sit there waiting forever if I have too many open at once.

I also put apps in folders, like all my games or shopping apps. Keeps screen cleaner since I have so many

I am planning on getting the IPad before I lose my vision altogether. I use my phone as my portable computer (like right now) and it would be nice to see the "big picture"!

I have an original iPad and actually like it. I made the mistake of just getting the WiFi version. The only downside was the screen (which is also an upside). The issue is, of course, reading. Glare can be annoying on the screen but, you can get glare reduce screen protectors. That said, watching a movie or something on it: awesome.

I'm thinking of giving K my iPad and getting myself an iPad 2 but haven't decided yet. I haven't tried any of the Android based tablets although have heard some good things from them. I think Samsung has a neat one that plugs into an external drive option so you have more storage and a proper keyboard (small but still keys).

The reality is that while the computer/laptop may be made in the US, all components are made overseas. AFAIK, none to very few are actually made in North America these days. The reality is that this action has resulted in a computer price that pretty much anyone could have and not just the wealthy.

Always, I have an iPad2 and love it. My boss loathes Apple so he bought one made by Toshiba and while he loved it initially, he recently purchased an iPad simply because the graphics were better and it is much faster.

When I first got my iPad I thought it would be great to take notes on in class and since it's so small it would fit nicely in my backpack. Well, it's a nightmare to type on...as is my iphone...and it just isn't very student friendly in that regard. If you want something to watch movies on or TED videos, it's great! I use mine to do puzzles on at night before I go to sleep. :)

I also recently got one of those HUGE iMac's for my office. It's super pretty and I loved being able to have two screens up at once without having two monitors, but it does not communicate well with the university's PC based operating systems. They just don't speak the same language. So, I went back to my old system but added the new HP TouchSmart 310. And I love it!!

Not switching to the iPhone 5. I don't need everything new that comes out and at the rate Apple releases new products, I'd be broke if I bought the latest and greatest. The new iPad3 is supposed to come out in the spring of 2012!!!

I'm pretty sure that any componentry used in any technology that may be made here is also made overseas, although I'd lay odds that there is very little manufacturing of the end product either there or here.

I hope that's true! I plan to upgrade. Nothing is wrong with my iphone4, I'm just waiting on the 5 so I can give my phone to my son because his phone is soooo old and I don't want to pay for his upgrade. I'd rather get me (the more responsible one) the upgrade.

I also have an iPad2 and I love it! I use it to take notes on, watch movies on, etc. The graphics are phenomenal. My laptop is in the shop right now and I'm actually using my iPad2 to access the Internet.

I've never had an iphone and I want one, debating on settling for the iphone4 because it's obviously going to be cheaper, and it's a luxury for me not a necessity.

I was looking at the Kindle...did you know Google had a reader? Anyhow, Target has Tech specialists, wonderful sources of info for people like me.

The IPHONE 4, if you buy the data plan is expected to sell as low as 29.95
Because, everyone will want the 5.

The best thing that will be coming out with the ipone 5 is the white cloud feature. This will apply to all mac products. The ability to sync all mac products together effortlessly. :|. You know I'll still be in here asking questions. And Julie, the younger folks at the library helped me with that same problem!

I also found out (at the library) amazon in coperation with Libraries, will have a Lend a Book program. How cool is this! (back to Kindle)

Well the iphone 3 is at 99.00 years later, not sure about the rumors that the iphone4 will be cheaper than that.

I don't care about having the latest *greatest* thing, I rather let it roll around and get the bugs worked out, I just want something to consolidate my gadgets!

Yes, it's very good. After I figured out (with Incubus' help) how to work my IPT4, I was refusing to buy that expensive data plan and the IPT4 and my cell phone plan were all I needed. Transition to the phone was so simple.

Honestly, I can't imagine needing more. It even has a flashlight.

Jailbroken means removing restrictions put on the iPhone by Apple or AT&T. Usually means a modified iOS and the ability to install apps not approved by Apple. It also violates the warranty and any Apple Care you have is no longer usable.

Thanks Linus. I guess I don't need to know how that makes it more customizeable then.

True- so worth it though :) and you can always go back to the way it came out of the box. But it is a risk you take because it can brick your phone and then your SOL.

A young lady I once had a... errrrrm!... 'liaison' with, offered me a 16gb iPhone 3gs on facebook, saying that she'd taken it back from a particularly gruesome ex in the last year. I'm desperate for a new mobile phone (mine is 2 and half years old and struggling) and I'm one of the original mac fan-boys so an iPhone would be ace.....so, yes please says I.

Long story short...Jailbroken, unlocked from network...IMEI number blocked...can't be used in UK, anywhere else, but not UK...Bloody buggery bastard!...Now have a 16gb iPod Touch as well as the 32gb iPod Touch I already own...*sigh*

Research says that the IMEI cannot be unblocked by a third party software. *sigh x2*

If it looks too good to be true...it is! :o

Thank you, Steve, for all of the insanely great tech you've given us. Thanks for bringing the personal computer into homes and schools. Thanks for helping create the future and making it possible for us to live in the world we read about in the cyberpunk novels of the 80s. Lastly, thank you for helping create the world of geek chic.

Ah, Steve Jobs. You changed an industry by doing some simple things. You showed that people didn't need to have the same boring look at computers and that it could be fun indeed.

OYecfV3ubP8

You showed that the hype by some wasn't necessarily the truth and ask us to "Think Different" when it came to looking at the world.

gkFZx6BmUHs

Because of an Apple Macintosh SE, I got into computers. It showed that I didn't need to be a super math genius but have the necessary logic as to how things worked. It gave me confidence to explore more than that with various flavours of Unix and Linux.

More importantly thanks for revolutionizing computers into more than just glorified calculators, office systems and gaming platforms. A lot of what Apple brought to IT made it possible for us to have the variety we do.

Your genius and your vision that you brought to Apple, the IT industry (and the rest of the world) will be greatly missed.

good one Linus!

I found these tips in a magazine recently...

Two- Button Screenshot: to take a picture of what's on your iphone screen:
1) Press Home and On/Off simultaneously.
2) The screenshot will be added to your Camera Roll

To copy an image in Safari, press on the images and hold until Save Image pops up. The image will be saved to your Camera Roll.

Double Click App
Set your iphone so that double tapping the Home button brings up an application, such as Camera.
1) Go to Settings, General and Home: Search, Phone Favourites, Camera or ipod.

iphone Keyboard Shortcuts
Insert punctuation quickly without having to view symbol options every time:
1) To add punctuation to your Alpha keyboard, press the 123 to see numbers and symbol options.
2) Keeping your finger on the screen, slide until you are touching the symbol you want to insert. As you release your finger from the screen, the symbol will be entered into your text and you'll be back the Apha keyboard.

Delete text using Gesture Controls
Instead of holding down DELETE to erase a line of text, here's an easier way:
1)Shake the handset.
2)You'll get a pop-up message asking if you'd like to "Undo typing" or "cancel". Choose undo and the last entered text will be gone.

There is also a display character count in messages short cut that I will type out of anyone is interested.

Is this a MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Tower?

This feels like an issue with a laptop-based Mac and could be an issue with the trackpad and pressing on the sides too much (I get this sometimes). If you are using a wireless mouse, may be time for a new battery.

I've been an iDork for years, and gasped when I heard about Steve Jobs, although I knew he'd been sick for awhile.

My elementary school actually had the old-school Macs, and that's what I originally learned to use a computer on. My high school and college were all Mac school's as well.

For a high school graduation present, my parents bought me one of the candy coloured iBooks, which I had for about 8 years. About two years ago, I saved my money to buy a white MacBook. I also have an iPod touch, and an iPhone 3GS. I have no idea what I did before I got an iPhone.

I am thinking of getting the 4S. I can tell my phone is starting to get a little buggy. After upgrading to iOS5, my music screen frequently freezes on me, and I have to restart the whole phone. :annoyed: It's getting slower as well.

No iPad, as I'm still torn between an iPad and a Kindle.

I converted my partner as well, and she bought herself a refurbished MacBook Pro last year.

I used the iCloud for bit on my iPhone 4 but found it was draining my battery like nothing else. That said, I would recommend at least upgrading to Snow Leopard. The security fixes and performance fixes would be enough, IMO, to do that upgrade at the least.

As for Lion, I've heard it has had repeated reports of issues and to wait until the first major update/fix for it.

I just did the upgrade to Lion last week in prep for the phone so the OS's could chat with each other. Something not highly publicized is that if you want it (the phone) to play nice with iPhoto that has to be upgraded also, not very expensive either, but a consideration.

For cloud storage I spread things around a bit not wanting all of my eggs in one basket. A combination of Dropbox, Evernote, Google docs, and now iCloud, seems to cover my needs without going out of pocket.

And yes, my phone is much smarter than I am.

We also asked her how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood. (omg) she replied with, "why do people keep asking me that?" lol.

It comes with iCloud already installed, which was super useful, but the battery only lasts for about 26 hours and that's without any apps open. Otherwise I am loving it!!

Hi Ruffy,

I use an adapter with my iphone since my ipod tunes are all on it. I also like to listen to pandora so it works nicely. Do you want me to look and see what kind of adaptor it is?

I would recommend the 4s since it's so much faster and has a ton to offer. And of course you get Siri. ;) Your app choices are so vast it's hard to recommend something without knowing all your likes and dislikes. I have tons of games on mine since my girls are always playing them on the way to school. I also have food apps, art apps and science apps. I'm a bit app happy at times! ;)

Do you have an Apple store nearby? It's nice to go in and chat up a family room rep so they can help you pick out what would work best for you!

Yeah, I never purchase first generation anything.

To be honest this is what has taken me so long just to get an iphone. They had so many bugs! I am glad I waited and although I love my igadgets I don't feel a need to have the latest and the so called greatest.

Sadly, I don't think I can wait till next year for the 5. I think I would be happy with one of the older versions of the iphone anyway. I currently have an android and have had it for a year. I love all the apps I can have on it and I don't see anything wrong with a Droid. I just like Apple stuff and think I'd rather switch now. My android is shutting off on me a lot daily, so it's time for a new phone and I have decided based on a poll that I would rather get the iphone than a droid this time around. the only thing I'm gonna miss is the option to have a touch screen and a keyboard. My phone mostly is used for texting and facebooking so I love the keyboard option, but I think I can get used to just the touch screen given that I'm sure the iphone is fun with all the apps and stuff that can go on it.

thanks for all the info. everybody I will check out the USB adapter. I've heard that lots of people use Pandora too. How does that all work? Can you actually play it through car speakers with this USB adapter? Doesn't your car have to have a USB port? Sure Catalina, if you can provide a link or picture that would be awesome. TY!

Yes, I do have a store near me, sooo fun! :balloon:

New cars have a USB adaptor built in. You can also buy a light plug that converts to a USB port. If you have a newer car too, you likely have the capability to connect your iPhone wirelessly to the speaker and radio via bluetooth. Old school cars can use a USB-slash-audio adaptor cord, assuming you can locate the female port of your speaker input in the car dash.

oops, my car has one of those pluggy things built in so all i have to do is plug it in to my phone or use the bluetooth. the only thing about having the bluetooth on is that it picks up all my phone calls and routes them through the radio. i will be talking and the call will drop out mid sentence and then scare the shit outta me when it blasts through the radio! :seeingstars:

At this time yes but there is a MacRumor that the 4 may be able to after a software update.

Siri used to be an app in the Appstore so it will work but it's most likely server overload issue since it's crashed once already.

what if I could buy an iphone 4 for 99.00. but there is no box and they would possibly throw in some accessories would anyone do it?

could I get them to turn it on see if it works , what should I look for?

Also, does anyone have verizon as a carrier and are you paying more than 80.00 per month with an iphone ? I'm not talking about a family plan or anything just an individual.

thanks!

iOS 5.0.1 came out today so look into updating if your battery is not behaving. I believe this is the one that will have that fix.

no box? as in the box it came in? It would depend on who and where I was getting it from.

Plans for iphone are not different than any other phone, all you need is a data plan to use it for internet, plus a cell plan. Mine is about 100.00 a month but I do have a couple extras.

LEGAL NOTICE

If you are the original owner of certain MacBook or MacBook Pro computers and/or you purchased a standalone 60W or 85W MagSafe power adapter for these computers, you could be entitled to benefits under a class action settlement

The settlement will provide a cash payment if you are the original owner (by purchase or gift) of certain Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro computer models (“Subject Computer”) or separately purchased an Apple 60W or 85W MagSafe “T” Power Adapter (“Adapter”), your Adapter showed signs of Strain Relief Damage, and you purchased an Adapter as a replacement (“Replacement Adapter”) within three years of purchasing the Subject Computer or Adapter. You may also be able to obtain a replacement adapter at no charge from Apple if your Adapter shows signs of Strain Relief Damage now or in the future. The United States District Court for the Northern District of California authorized this notice. The Court will have a hearing to consider whether to approve the settlement, so that the benefits may be paid.

WHO’S AFFECTED?

You’re a “Class Member” if you are a United States resident who purchased in the United States an Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro computer or an Apple 60W or 85W MagSafe MPM-1 (“T”) Power Adapter.

WHAT’S THIS ABOUT?

The lawsuit claimed that the MagSafe “T” Adapter is defective in that it allegedly “dangerously frays, sparks and prematurely fails to work,” and that Apple engaged in misrepresentations regarding the Adapter. Apple denies all allegations and has asserted many defenses. Apple is entering into this settlement to avoid burdensome and costly litigation. The settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing.

WHAT CAN YOU GET FROM THE SETTLEMENT?

Apple has agreed to provide a cash payment to Class Members who purchased a Replacement Adapter for a Subject Computer or Adapter covered by the settlement and who send in a valid claim form. The settlement provides for different cash payments depending on when you purchased a Replacement Adapter.

YEAR REPLACEMENT ADAPTER PURCHASED
CASH PAYMENT AMOUNT
YEAR 1
THE ACTUAL AMOUNT PAID FOR THE REPLACEMENT ADAPTER (EXCLUDING TAX & SHIPPING) UP TO $79
YEAR 2
$50
YEAR 3
$35

There is a limit of three refunds per Subject Computer.

You may also be able to obtain a replacement adapter at no charge from Apple if your Adapter shows signs of Strain Relief Damage now or in the future.

HOW DO YOU GET A PAYMENT?

A detailed notice and claim form package contains everything you need. Just call 1-888-332-0277 or go to www.AdapterSettlement.com to get one.

HOW DO YOU GET A REPLACEMENT ADAPTER?

If your Adapter shows signs of Strain Relief Damage now or in the future, you may claim a replacement under Apple’s Adapter Replacement Program by taking your Adapter and computer to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider or contacting AppleCare. Strain Relief Damage means fraying, melting, straining, sparking, weakening, discoloration, bubbling, overheating and/or separation of the Adapter’s strain reliefs.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES

To claim a cash payment, you must mail the claim form postmarked on or before March 21, 2012. To obtain a Replacement Adapter, you must contact Apple within three years from the date you purchased a Subject Computer or standalone Adapter, or May 21, 2012, whichever is later; no claim form is required. If you do not claim a cash payment or Replacement Adapter within these time periods, you will lose your right to obtain these benefits.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS?

If you don’t want to make a claim and you don’t want to be legally bound by the settlement, you must postmark your request to exclude yourself by January 6, 2012, or you won’t be able to sue, or continue to sue, Apple about the legal claims in this case. If you exclude yourself, you will not be eligible to receive a payment from this settlement.

If you stay in the Class, you may object to the settlement. Objections must be received by January 6, 2012. The detailed notice describes how to exclude yourself or object. The Court will hold a hearing in this case (In re MagSafe Power Adapter Litigation, Case No. C09-01911-JW) on February 27, 2012, at 9:00 a.m. to consider whether to approve (1) the settlement and (2) attorneys’ fees and expenses of up to $3.1 million and service payments to Plaintiffs of $5,000 each (not to exceed $30,000). You may appear at the hearing, but you don’t have to. To obtain a full notice and claim form, go to www.AdapterSettlement.com or call toll free 1-888-332-0277. For more details, go to www.AdapterSettlement.com or contact Helen Zeldes, Esq., Zeldes & Haeggquist, LLP, 625 Broadway, Suite 906, San Diego, CA 92101, 619-342-8000 or contact Steven A. If you're buying from dude off craigslist or something...no. If you're getting it from a carrier you'd probably be okay, but I'd find out why it's not in its box.

We have Verizon but we're on a family plan so I'm not much help on this one. You could probably do it for under 80 depending on how many minutes you need and how much texting you do. Keep in mind though, that texting to another iPhone is free so if a lot of your textees are iPhone users you can get by with a minimal texting plan.

I have the pandora app on my iPhone that I only use at home. That way I'm connecting to my network rather than Verizon's and I don't eat at my data plan.

A really cool app, especially if your not particularly good with music *coughArwencough* is Shazam. You can "tag" songs on the radio to find out the name of the song and the artist. It'll also give you the option to buy the song (from iTunes, of course).

Another app that I really like, and have had since my 3G, is called Around Me. It's basically a locator app and if you have it set to use your current location you can search for things near you (either by name or category), wherever you are. I hadn't used it a whole lot since since I got the 4S, but when Siri took a couple hours off the other day, I was glad I still had it.

This only applies to MagSafe Power Adapters that have cracked. There was a history of some cracking due to heat from charging.

Mine's improved but part of it is some simple steps. I found deleting the iCloud stuff reduced battery drain considerably. Also regular full drain (once a month) helps keep the battery conditioned. If you do a quick "doubleclick" on the Home button, you can see which apps are still "running". Holding one of them down allows you to force the select app to exit from the Home "bar"
