View Full Version : Now you have more time...

...well, you have another 1.26 microseconds in every day. The earthquake in Chile was so strong that it changed the earth's rotation speed, slowing down the day by 1.26 microseconds and also moved the Earth about 3 feet on its figure axis. (The figure axis is the axis around which the mass of the Earth is balanced, it is NOT the same as the North-South axis but is offset by about 10 meters.)

Just what I need...more time on my hands~~~~~~

Wait.. I'm comfused.. it says:

The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.

The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

We lost time, didn't we? Or did I misunderstand?

I say it just highlights the importance of living in the now rather than the tomorrow since it may not be there...

Oops, you know what I realized I posted this and meant to say that we *lost* time not gained it. This is what I get for trying to post when I haven't had my requisite caffeine allotment for the day.

Thanks for catching this Linus!

Dammit AJ! I had so many plans for that extra 1.26 millisecond.

And now ...
Gone....all my dreams and plans...just gone...

Wow. Incredible force and impact!

So, time really is NOT on our hands.

And the article mentioned 3" (regarding axis shift?), I believe - not feet.

Now, I don't understand much of this... but, with spin, gravity and angles and such... will this rectify itself over the course of [some] time that you know of?

Will this affect all things very well predicted like exact times of New and Full Moons, and the calendar year(s), ultimately? Clock times everywhere?? How will this impact us AJ in those ways do you believe? It's like another whole time existence/reality on our hands, sort of - just like that!? Because it will eventually all add up and/or catch up, yes? Things will have to be changed now, right? (Timings?) And what about changes with anything else, like seasonal and climate? (Over a course of time here I'm talking.)

Thanks,
WILDCAT

Yes, I thought of "them" too! AUGHHH!!!!!! :runforhills:

They'd have to REALLY crunch some numbers though. I expect them to say, "SEE, SEE!!"... "it's happening"!

And I wonder if Pat Robertson will be muzzled for this "event". (Or, has he barked out some dumb-assed darn thing already?)
___

And here, I was just kind of bummed out about getting older - and how quickly time seems to fly!!

Drats.

Actually there's two different 'times' that we're talking about here. The shift in the spin of the Earth does nothing to affect the flow of Time (what we measure with clocks). So a second is still a second by the formal definition (which has to do with cycles of radioactive decay of a cesium-133 atom). However, the 24.25 hour day just got shorter by a millionth of a second.

It won't affect climate or seasons since it did not change the Earth's orientation on its plane of orbit around the Sun. (The reason we have seasons is that Earth does not orbit the Sun at a 90-degree angle relative to its plane of orbit. Instead we're tilted about 23-degrees toward the sun with a slight wobble so that sometimes it's closer to 22 and sometimes closer to 24 degrees).

The only real-world application I can think would be *at all* affected by this are GPS systems since they take into account the rotation of the Earth. But even that won't matter for the GPS you and I use in our cars since they move so slow relative to what can be done in a millionth of a second.

AJ,

Do you know which way we moved: closer or farther from the sun? I had shown my colleague that article last night and he had asked me but looking through the article it wasn't apparent (or I'm going blind) as to which way we went. If I read correctly, the vertical changed but I'm not sure if that means the North went closer or if the South went closer or perhaps we went farther?

I'm not sure. I should, at some point, read the NASA paper since that should have exactly how we shifted. I haven't done so yet because I keep staring at this shell script I'm trying to write that's giving me all manner of grief.
